Is it possible to become addicted to over the counter medications? My 75 year old mother recently moved to my town so that I could help her financially, etc. I have become very concerned about the amount of excederine, prilosec, nasal spray, aleve, and other antacid medicines that she takes. She has a history of bleeding ulcers, she smokes about 2 packs of cigarettes a week, high blood pressure, and other ailments of old age. I didn't realize that she was taking so much of this medicine.

In addition, I would try to get an oral prescription antihistamine. Some people use over the counter Benadryl and over the counter steroid cream but they did nothing for me and my rash, just were not strong enough. Over the counter steroids creams and over the counter antihistamines were useless for me, totally useless. They did nothing. My treatment team was useless and dragged their feet doing nothing until the rash was really pretty bad and I demanded they do something.

Bill is right - Atarax/Vistaril/Hyrdroxyzine works wonders with the itching, but you need a prescription for it. Another over the counter med is Benadryl - readily available over here but not sure in India. In another thread some of us had commented on applying ice packs/cool towels which help in a pinch. Hope is subsides soon because it's really bothersome.

It burns and itches and I have had it for two weeks. I have tried over the counter creams and corn starch. The area is raw in some places. I have not had intercourse in over a year. The only thing that I found at home to work was and old perscription for triamcinolone acetonide cream.

I used to have them prescribed, but the prescription cost on the nhs was higher then buying them over the counter. .. I normally have zertec or cetrizeane (I think one of them is the same as pyrtine) ... my first appointment isn't for over a week yet, but.this is on my long list of questions to ask when I get there. t put ice right on skin but wrap in something like a towel and try short period of ice to the area. If you can take these types of things, Over the Counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen also may help. But talk to your doctor for help.
