163305 tn?1333668571 —Cóilín Nunan, Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics News outlets reported Monday that UK government scientists have found a gene, known as mcr-1, that gives bacteria resistance to colistin, often used by doctors when other antibiotics fail. Such resistance was first discovered last month in China, and in the past few weeks, the resistance gene has also been found in Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and in several Asian and African countries.
Avatar m tn Come yesterday, I had another terrible outbreak (worse than usual)... will these become more commonplace now? Is this a sign of HSV-resistance to the drug? Are there any other courses of action I can consider?
Avatar m tn I was having some stomach irritation and loose stool, and after consuming some lactose and fructose heavy food at a conference, my bloating returned and my IBS was worse than it was prior to the antibiotics. I then took a course of Cipro, 100 mg twice daily for a week. I also took Xifaxan simultaneously for the IBS 500 mg 3 times daily for 10 days. The Cipro seemed to help the joint pain but the two compounded the GI symptoms.
Avatar m tn In that case your chances of catching anything are slim, furthermore taking antiobiotics for absolutely no reason can increase your resistance to antibiotics. So when/if you REALLY need to take them one day they might not work.
Avatar f tn t needlessly take a year (as recommended by this doctor) of antibiotics leading to more resistance in the population at large and the proliferation of superbugs. Is your current neurologist unable or unwilling to prescribe or discuss treatment for your on-going symptoms? I'd much sooner try and find another doctor if that's the case rather than put all my eggs in one unproven treatment basket.
Avatar m tn If the culture showed resistance to all oral antibiotics, then the only option you have is to take either intramuscular or intravenous antibiotics. Also if you have recurrent infections then this could be due to underlying high sugar as in diabetes. You should get your blood sugar checked, both fasting and two hours after food. Also you may need to take a glucose tolerance test. Please consult your PCP regarding diabetes. Hope this helps.

Avatar n tn i recently had oral surgery to get my wisdom teeth out (on tuesday and it is now monday). since tuesday i have been taking antibiotics to prevent any infections in my mouth. for this past week my blood sugars have been very high...i was in the 300s for much of the time during these days. this is very odd...because i take good care of myself and usually am never this high (my A1C's are always about 6). i was just wondering if anyone here knew the causes for these highs?
Avatar f tn We get over viruses with no intervention like that on our own. And overuse of antibiotics can cause issues with things like resistance. And stopping and starting antibiotics prematurely also contributes to resistance. It gives the pathogens time to learn how to outsmart the antibiotic which leads to those things called super bugs. That's just an FYI. If you can't tolerate something, you have to do what you have to do which may include stopping the med.
Avatar f tn What I would like to know is if the people who have not taken many antibiotics in their lifetimes are as at risk as those who have built a resistance to them. Is this mutant bacteria dangerous because the antibiotics don't work for a person who has a resistance or because it is so powerful that even if an antibiotic works well for you, the bacterial strain is so powerful, it will override any known antibiotic? Does this question make sense?
Avatar f tn A potentially dangerous sexually transmitted disease that infects millions of people each year is growing resistant to drugs and could soon become untreatable, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. . . Scientists reported last year finding a "superbug" strain of gonorrhea in Japan in 2008 that was resistant to all recommended antibiotics and warned then that it could transform a once easily treatable infections into a global health threat.
1287446 tn?1313947638 I’ve done a lot of research online and when I read about insulin resistance, it seems to pinpoint nearly everything I’m experiencing. I’m not overweight, and I think that doctors tend to think you have to be overweight to have an issue (at least my current doctor does). I’m paranoid about becoming overweight and have always monitored calories, macronutrients, etc.

Avatar f tn Is there a medical reason you're not breastfeeding? Don't mean to be personal, but breast milk is the only food that gives an infant the first immune resistance and digestive capability. You can't reproduce this with formula. If you must use formula, then it appears you need to test your child for food intolerances and allergies, as soy is also a common allergen, thought dairy is the worst with wheat second.

1691275 tn?1322327507 There are no contraindications whatsoever to taking two antibiotics and a strong arguement to continue with the first antibiotic as per doctor's orders and simultaneously take the second. There are slight variants in the way both antibiotics attack replication of bacteria. If you fail to complete the amoxcillin you risk developing an amoxcillan resistant strain. Generally medical practice is not to over-use antibiotics to prevent the development of resistant strains.
148588 tn?1465778809 “In some countries, because of resistance, carbapenem antibiotics would not work in more than half of people treated for K. pneumoniae infections,” WHO says. It's been a problem in the United States for decades. Last fall, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than two million people are infected by drug-resistant germs each year, and 23,000 die of their infections. The biggest killer by far in the U.S. is diarrhea-causing C. difficile.
