Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics for gum infection

antibiotics

Avatar n tn I had a gum infection about a month ago and the dentist put me on antibiotics and i took the full course. I thought that had got rid of the infection because i didn't have the vile taste in my mouth that i had. I worrying today because i can taste the taste i had when i had the infection. The other day i kissed and was intimate with a man and i thought it had cleared so i didn't worry about the infection that day.
Avatar f tn I had a root canal in one of my lower molars some years ago, and recently the gum around it became inflamed. I went for my normal check-up and the dentist said that it was infected and prescribed antibiotics (I finished the prescribed course). She also told me to brush three times a day. I went back the next week, as the filling fell out of it, and she said that it was looking better, re-filled the tooth and recommended Corsodyl for a couple of weeks.
Avatar f tn I had to take a round on a zpack for a respiratory infection, then two weeks later a round of amoxicillin for a gum infection because of a wisdom tooth. I am also very anti-antibiotics. My recommendation is to take a probiotic - like acidophilus or do the probiotic yogurt. It at least helps put back the good bacteria in your stomach the antibiotic is stripping out.
Avatar m tn If you have throbbing at the extraction site, you may have a dry socket: when a blood clot doesn't settle in the socket causing bone to be exposed and very painful. See you dentist for treatment and to check for infection. I don't think resistance to antibiotics should be an issue, but you may need a different antibiotic if the previous med didn't work against the bacteria. Good luck.
Avatar n tn I was told that it could take as long as two months before total healing if not longer. My dentist stopped the antibiotics but I am continuing to take anti-inflammatory for discomfort. This extraction was by far the worst experience with an extraction I have ever had, including complicated wisdom tooth removal. I'm sure the infection didn't help things at all. Thank you so kindly for your suggestion.
Avatar n tn there are many different types of infection in the mouth and different antibiotics that work best for different cases. You should not be treating yourself. The infection will most likely return after the course of antibiotics is done. And staying on them indefinitley is potentially very bad for the rest of your body.
Avatar m tn I agree bacterial infection seems unlikely after the week of Antibiotics I took and I shall take your advice a yeast infection is also unlikely. I assume you hint that Clotrimazole is not a sure cure for a yeast infection if I even had any? I think based on your advice I will hold out taking the DOXY until I have been to the clinic again.
Avatar n tn Hi Sevina, from what i have heard, a gum abscess is an infection and the puss coming out is evidence. You really should see your dentist about this and get some antibiotics to clear it up.
Avatar f tn Hi I have large extremely painful abscess causing severe pain and swelling in gum, jawbone and neck. This is from a tooth diagnosed with internal root asorption. I've been taking anitbiotics for 5 days with no relief. I'm scheduled to see new specialist in 5 days, the first available appointment so I'm officially under nobody's care. Is this a dangerous situation and do I need to do something ASAP instead of waiting for my appointment?

Avatar f tn I asked for antibiotics, but were not given any. I went back today to see the hygienist and asked for another dentists opinion on if I had an infection. The hygienist seems to think that I did have an infection but the dentist did not and again would not give me any antibiotics, just said use the mouthwash and advil. It is so painful even today and seems not to be getting better. It is white and purple and my jaw hurts.
Avatar n tn About 3 months ago I had some cosmetic dental work done on my top four front teeth to close a gap tha I had. I had four temporary crowns for about 2 weeks, and I developed a gum infection around the crowns. My dentist explained that this was because temporaries don't fit snuggly at the gum line, which can cause bacteria to develop. He decided to remove the temporaries and cement in the permanents. He gave me a perscription mouthwash and oral antibiotics.
Avatar m tn The bacteria of the gum infection seemed very resistant and virulent for that gum infection has not receded 9 days after taking the antibiotics. I am only afraid that if I stopped continuing with the antibiotics, the gum infections would become worse. I could be near the point of losing my teeth.
Avatar f tn Hello, I had my impacted tooth removed 3 days ago and now the area is white and it still hurts. my gum is swollen and i can barely open my mouth. the doctor prescribed me antibiotics the day he extracted the tooth. Should i wait and finish the antibiotics or should i go see the dentist.

Avatar n tn Also the sinus infection caused very watery orange discharge from the sinus cavities and flow when I bent my head down. I had a sinus infection and gum infection at the same time. I took Amoxicillin for a week and it all cleared up.
Avatar m tn IN my opinion you are playing a dangerous game by not taking the antibiotic for your infection. Look it up--- gum infections and the heart.
Avatar m tn What about a gum abscess that is being treated with antibiotics? My boyfriend has a gum abscess and he has been prescribed penicillin and topical antibiotics. He says it is getting better, but for some reason his cheek on the other side of his mouth got swollen (maybe unrelated from biting it) and he says the area of the abscess is still a little irritated even after being on antibiotics today.
Avatar f tn Usually tooth infection takes a very long time and has to spread to neighboring gum area to spread to blood vessels and cause infection. However this can be painful, can cause exposed roots and cause persistent infection. Hence consult a dentist immediately. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar m tn This was extremely painful for a few days, the gum went white underneath and there was a lot of pain in the jaw / gum but no pain in the tooth. I think this was due to long term problems I have with TMJ but cleared up after a few days. I returned to dentist for crown prep and explained the situation. She prepped the tooth for the crown and said that due to this problem with the temp filling and the fact that the hole went close to the root cavity I may need RCT.
Avatar m tn hpylori does not, in fact, need to be treated with antibiotics. It depends on how serious the infection is. The more antibiotics you use, the more other problems you'll get, and the hpylori will just come back stronger, since it's omnipresent. We all have it flowing harmlessly through our systems until our immune systems get out of whack and it takes root somewhere.
Avatar f tn My dentist prescribed me 500 mg of amoxicillin every 6 hours for a gum infection. It's been a few days now and Ifeel better and I want to resume my workout schedule. Is strenuous exercise contraindicated when taking amoxicillin? Also, is sun exposure a factor, and if so, how long after you complete the round of antibiotics should you wait before you are able to go back out in the sun?
Avatar n tn t get rid of the infection, so maybe a broad spectrum antibiotic will work for me. I sure hope so. thank you again for your advice.
Avatar f tn I got a gum infection as well and my dentist just cleaned my teath and prescribed oral antibiotics i didnt get anasthesia for anything thought.
Avatar n tn thank for ur comment.
Avatar f tn Why will antibiotics not cure this infection if it's bacterial? I have the same problem, although I only noticed the lump on my gum after having a root canal on tooth #14. The nerves had died though prior to the root canal. It's been two weeks since the root canal and I still have the lump and lingering numbness on the left side of my cheek and lips. After the first root canal procedure I took Cleocin for 5 days.
