Avatar n tn There are many foods and diet supplements out there that can help with aging dogs so ask your veterinarian about those options also.
Avatar n tn WOW! You sure are a great doggy parent in that your pup has lived to the ripe old age of 15. So far, all 3 of the dogs I've lost never quite made it to 14, so my hat's off to you. :-) With the previous hip injury, it's pretty obvious that the problem is arthritis that has finally reached the crippling point. Glucosamine can only do so much. Dogs are a whole lot more stoic about pain than humans are, and I can about bet you with 100% certainly that your dog IS hurting.
5830515 tn?1375407668 I'm running into so much conflicting information on what foods I must avoid and what I can eat. I don't have my first appointment for another two weeks. Anyone have tips or resources? I'm so anxious and paranoid!!
Avatar n tn She has started soiling her bed at night and he is cleaning up stool 3 - 4 times daily. Vet has been little help. Is this a natural part of her aging? Are there ways to improve this? She does not seem to realize she is "doing it wrong" by going inside versus outside, although she was fully housebroken until several months ago. He is so very torn because she seems to be a happy dog, but he does no know if this is a signal he should put her down. Any advice?

1388999 tn?1370042814 I know how hard it is to see our dogs deal with the pain of aging. Still, they handle it far better than we humans do. I always admired my dogs for the way they carried on in the face of adversity and still enjoyed life.
662972 tn?1270166301 The most common food allergy is chicken, which is unfortunatly also the base of most dogs foods. I would really consider trying the Premium Edge Lamb formula, keep her on it for a good two months to see if she still itches. You can also try adding fatty acids to her diet which will help relieve the itching aswell. A good quality one that is a really fair price is Artic Vigor. You can ask a Pet supply store to order it for you.
Avatar f tn There are several great foods that your vet can recommend that actually reverse arthritis plus these foods are designed for senior dogs (less protein, higher fibre, more anti-oxidants) anyways and help prolong life. The daily cost of these foods are actually less then a good petstore brand plus supplements. If you are really concerned, a second opinion is not unreasonable.
1477071 tn?1288288585 I do know that my vets have recommended virgin coconut oil due to its anti-viral and anti- protazoan properties for my dogs with coccidia and other stomach ailments, knocks it right out. It also regulates the thyroid, I've spoken to a rescue center about this and she has gotten several dogs off of thyroid meds with this successfully. It won't hurt you (unless you have a coconut allergy), so why the hell not try it.
1916673 tn?1420233270 Hi. Internal use of aloe vera for dogs, however, is frowned upon by some experts. They claim that this plant contains chemical compounds known as saponins, which are used in some detergents as sudsing agents. These compounds may make some dogs ill, especially in large quantities. My opinion on aloe vera products is it's fairly safe for external use (as in shampoos, creams, etc.) but I would not use it as an internal remedy for anything in dogs or cats.
Avatar n tn Hyperadrenocorticism and other endocrine disorders, such as hypothyroid can change eating habits. Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) is a disease that occurs commonly in aging pets and can cause a voracious appetite. This disease requires special blood tests and cannot be diagnosed by routine blood work. Treating for G.I parasites with Panacur and Drontal may help even if no parasites have been identified in fecal analysis.
Avatar n tn Dogs have just as much personality as humans, some kids hate broccoli, some dogs hate dry food, try experimenting with different kinds or mix it with wet food and warm water, and if he still won't eat it, just plan his diet so he gets his vital nutrition without dry food.
Avatar f tn What vitamins can I take to prevent aging? Exclusively the face and neck areas. If there is not a vitamin, can herbs help and what kind? Any Natural Preventions?
Avatar f tn s rated 1 star which is the lowest grade.....Then move over and check out their 4-5-6 star rated foods and go with one of them......The Bacon type snacks are full of toxins, too. Yes, you can give snacks but they need to have No By-products, No Dyes, No Glutens, etc. How bout baby carrots or sliced apples till you finds healthier treats.... The steak and chicken extras are fine as long as they have NO seasonings and are NOT fried........
Avatar f tn The vet gave me this ickey brown stuff for my dogs wounds. Is there anyway to stop the dog from biting it's paws without medication? Or is it just something I'd have to watch.
2065896 tn?1373685384 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
1916673 tn?1420233270 I'd go for Jerky treats made in China.
Avatar f tn infections only. And the over use of anti biotics can lead to yeast infections as the anti biotics break down the body's own natural defenses. Your use of the word 'prone' makes me wonder if she has received too many anti biotics. I would suggest that you try to build up 'her' natural defense system. Learn how to do that and resort to prescription meds ONLY as a last resort. They can be a double edged sword.
Avatar n tn Sorry if I miss spelled it...I just know it's a oral anti fungal to be given twice a day. The Xanax is working he's calmer now and he's doing better since, it's been two days and the rash has dried significantly. I spoke to the vet they said he may be taking rimadyl for pain. So we won't be giving him that anymore. He seems to be acting more like himself he plays more and now is going back to his usual habits so this is great!
Avatar f tn chard, dandelion, kale, celery, carrots and ginger. Your best bet is to blend them into a smoothie so you can eat a lot at once. Raw coco butter and almond oil rubbed directly on your skin helps with elasticity and hydration drink a lot of water. These measures will make a small difference but generally the skin has already been damaged from being stretched and it will wrinkle and sag when it's no longer being extended.
Avatar m tn Also you may want to start looking at the foods you are eating and try to cut back on fatty foods and those high in cholesterol like eggs and hamburgers etc. to help keep your cholesterol level in your body down. Hope This Helps. Have A Nice Day.
Avatar f tn No? I eat hot dogs frequently and I'm now 8 months. My baby boy is perfectly fine. I eat frozen foods too.
436837 tn?1293793226 Our mix breed has cataracts, he functions well but at 16 although the vet claims he is 13, we claim he is 2 the way he acts, we worry how bad this will get.We don't want him to be blind and have to put him "down".The vet says it is a sign of aging and just go with the flow.Surgery is beyond our financial means, I am not working right and no way will we be approved for financial anything.anyone else had to deal with this?
Avatar f tn Go to ulta and talk to their estheticians for a professional recommendation. While pregnant do stay away from retinols which are anti aging. They can cause birth defects. But look for something that has hyaluronic acid in it which is a natural chemical our body makes which helps retains moisture by 1000x its weight. So it is super hydrating which will help reduce and prevent wrinkles.
