Anorexia and family therapy

Common Questions and Answers about Anorexia and family therapy

anorexia

2215229 tn?1339342648 I'm sorry but that's horrible advice! I've had anorexia since I was 14 (and disordered eating since I was 7), I'm now 20. I've seen many friends manage their anorexia and one die from it. Keeping a food diary with everything you eat is a bad idea because it reinforces the obsessive relationship with food, you'll be counting calories and trying to eat smaller portions so it looks better on your log, and feeling horrible about how "much" you've had.
Avatar f tn I have friends and family that I love, that love me. They all know about the anorexia since its visible but the drug stuff, only my friends know about. If my family knew, I fear they would try to take my children from me. They're all very scared about the anorexia but frustrated that the whole "just eat please, you're thin, swear to god!" thing doesn't work. Many of my friends have had drug problems, none have ever had eating disorders that I know of.
Avatar n tn I feel my family is in a holding pattern and I cannot firgure out how to help her. I am willing to do family counseling, residency or whatever it takes to help get her relief from the pain of this disease. I started reading about the pituitary gland and cortisol production, ACTH and other potential solutions and just feel like I'm starting to consider any path as a possible solution which is, of course, confusing. Do you have any suggestions?
Avatar f tn My parents are very angry with me and have basically disowned me from the family. They think I have anorexia but I dont I dont think im fat and need to lose weight. I just have alot of panic attacks and start to shake and then i cant get my dinner. Can anyone please help me - what can i do to make this stop???
918035 tn?1274644533 I'm familiar with those same voices...they are the anorexia. Don't listen. You are worth so much more and you deserve to be healthy and have a good life. And I know you don't want to put more stuff on your family b/c of the death, but anorexia is serious and you need help to recover. I'm sure your family will be glad you told them. Yeah, maybe they will be mad about what you're doing to yourself, but that's just because they don't know anything about anorexia.
179856 tn?1333547362 I was just reading about Portia DeRossi's anorexia and it says when she was down to 82 pounds she "was told she was suffering from a handful of serious conditions: osteoporosis, organ failure, cirrhosis of the liver and the auto-immune disease lupus." how would anorexia cause cirrhosis does anybody know? I'm just curious because I never heard of that before and was wondering how it was related.
Avatar n tn With treatment, individuals get fully recovered or partially recovered. Treatment helps an individual and family members cope as the individual and family move towards recovery. Best, Dr.
1572617 tn?1305237554 Definitely tell your psychologist. Honesty is key to successful therapy. It'll be hard to reveal the anorexia and confront it, but worthwhile. As to how to tell her, just say it aloud, the same way you did with your mentor, friends, and family. You were brave enough to tell them, so use the same approach with your psychologist.
1050362 tn?1253918483 Hi, like the above person mentioned it is a good thing you haven't been doing this for very long. That doesn't mean you aren't sick or don't need help but it is easier to change the behaviors when they haven't been with you for years and years. I am a recovered anorexic/bulimic and it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. I was where you are though. There was a time that I didn't want help. I cringed at the thought of therapy and eating or not purging.
Avatar f tn Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a psychologist is excellent and they often do full family therapy. Working with medical professionals and dieticians are typically also part of the 'team'. The specifics will depend on what particular eating disorder you have. If you are severely underweight, they will try to normalize your weight. This can be hard when you fight this emotionally. Psychiatrists and psychologists CAN help. You know this since you've been through it before.
931175 tn?1244457804 If stress, anxiety and/or depression are part of her dynamics. Stress management tools, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and/or medication could help. Anorexia can be life threatening. To learn more about eating disorders, visit the bella vita website. There is also a free survey to screen for an eating disorder.
Avatar n tn What you write is classic symptoms and behaviors of one getting more and more into the depth of their anorexia. Isolation and depression are also common features. What you need to do is ask yourself what keeps you in this relationship. Her threat of leaving the relationship is really her eating disorder talking.
Avatar f tn d pretty much missed two already. I got scared and checked online. Immediately, the red light of ANOREXIA NERVOSA began flashing everywhere. I panicked. It took me almost no time to tell myself to stop exercising and add some weight. I've improved my diet, eat a lot, attempt to squeeze as much fat into my diet as possible. My BMI is not too bad: 17.5-17.7 right now. This "recovery" has been going on for a week. What really scares me is not getting my period back.
Avatar f tn It may be time to see your family physician and have a medical check up, that way you can get some expert medical help and not feel like you are alone in this.
Avatar f tn Proper nutrition is the goal in treating Anorexia. Food is medicine. To learn more about anorexia and treatment options, visit the bella vita website.
869670 tn?1239964618 The next step is to tell someone in your life who you trust and, with their support, to get professional help. You can start with your family doctor. But he or she will, hopefully, refer you to someone who is an expert in eating disorders. You can also try attending a meeting of OA. Just look for Overeater's Anonymous in your phonebook to find out where the next meeting is.

Avatar f tn for non Brits) may be anything from very skinny to light, depending on her height and frame. Your description makes her family situation seem to be a possible cause for your friend's weight and eating behavior. Your friend would have to see a doctor, ideally an eating disorder specialist, to see about a diagnosis of anorexia.

1106321 tn?1258580667 I would recommend that you work directly with the professionals that are treating your son. Family treatment is a crucial part of reentry into the home. Family passes for both the child and the family can be quite instrumental in the readjustment period. Also, they could best direct you for the specific needs of your son and your family.
