Aromatase inhibitors block the enzyme aromatase (found in the body's muscle, skin, breast and fat), which is used to convert androgens (hormones produced by the adrenal glands) into estrogen. In the absence of estrogen, tumors dependent on this hormone for growth will shrink.

Have developed a heart rhythm disturbance, shortness of breath, edema of hands and legs/feet since being on Anastrozole. How worried should I be? I have been on Anastrozole for year, 4 more to go (5 ys.) I have the worse Joint pain, stiffness, hurts to walk, get up from chair, I get out of bed hurting, I ache everyday. My skin and stays so dry, my hair grew back after chemo, but is lifeless, thin, etc. I do not like this Pill and want to discontinue, but my Oncologist said it is doing me more good, to keep taking it. This pill is really aging me, dry wrinkly skin, no energy, cant walk and move like I want to.

(beyond the initial 5 years) is with letrozole (Femara) after 5 years of tamoxifen. Letrozole and anastrozole (Arimidex) are both aromatase inhibitors and are very similar to one another. In most of the adjuvant studies using these drugs, 5 years of treatment has been given. An ongoing study will compare 5 to 10 years of aromatase inhibitors but there are no results available yet on that study.

I was 38 and premenstrual. Following surgery, chemo and radiotherapy had 5 years of zoladex and arimidex which finished in Aug 2013. My periods returned 10 months later but have been very irregular, cycles from 5 weeks to a 2 month and a 3 month cycle. I have had enormous problems with intermittent fatigue, muscle aches, painful breasts, mood wings (PMDD), hypertension. I was fatigued during the hormonal tx but the present fatigue does not improve with rest.

Now endo is suggesting that in order to give him more time to grow, we give him Anastrozole. I have seen lot of posts and spent hours on the forums wherever I found mention of advanced bone age/Anastrozole/Letrozole. It seems there are quite a few posts under Pediatric Endo forum but not able to find any answers if any parents tried Anastrozole/Letrozole and what has been their experience regarding delaying bone age and side effects.

Today the results of the Oncotype DX was 8 and the doctor gave me Arimidex (anastrozole) 1mg tablets and I am scheduled to see the radiologist next week. I think with all the side effects of the medicine, it sure is scary, but I will try it. If it gets me sick or if I am unable to take it, then I won't take anything. I also want to see what the radiologist suggests as far as how many tx's I will need to take. I guess time will tell.

I am clearly not in remission. Please advise as to your thoughts on the Arimidex versus continuing with Doxil or switching to Topotecan or Avastin with cytoxin or w/abraxane. The Fox Chase guy didn't want to use up the aresenal on tumors measured in millimeters -- I'm afraid it will really take hold and I'll be sunk. It's been 5 years so far and I've got an 11 and 13 year old I have to be around for at least until they get out of high school.

Anyone taking Arimidex or has taken it in the past. I am looking for feedback if it helped lower the ca 125??? My CA 125 is rising from 93 to 156 and now in the 230's... however nothing has changed on my pet scan and no measurable disease... I am seeing my onc on Monday...and he had recommended to try if i want Arimidex. I have other options like trying different chemo's... but then we are just treating the number... I wanted to give this a try.... what do you think...

The oncologist switched me to Anastrozole but the Anastrozole failed. My mom passed away at the age of 97 from omentum cancer. We didn't know she had cancer until 2 months before she passed. It's a very slow growing cancer. We had no idea and had never heard of omentum cancer before but we were later told It's a metastasis from the ovaries. My recent telehealth appointment with Sloan-Kettering the oncologist suggested exemestane Hormone blocker. Wishing your mom the best.

If you've had Hashimoto's for that long, have you also been on any replacement thyroid hormone medication? If so, what medication, dosage and for how long? Have you had Free T4 and Free T3 tested to determine actual thyroid hormone levels? If so, what are their results, with reference ranges? I've read that there's a connection between breast cancer and thyroid disease, but I'm not exactly sure what it is.

I learned that some weman experienced elevated blood pressure and blood clots while on Arimidex. And Arimidex is known to cause high blood pressure and blood clots. How do know for sure that Arimidex is the cause of my high blood pressure?

Hello. I am taking Arimidex (dx May 2007, IDC, 1 cm., grade 3, negative lymph nodes; had lumpectomy, sentinel node biopsy, chemo, radiation; I was 54 and perimenopausal at time of dx and chemo put me in menopause.) I also now occasionally consult a holistic MD (referred by my oncologist) for nutritional advice.

Please inform me of side effects of Arimidex. Also confirm whether clinical tests proved that arimidex really prevent cancer from returning. Recently I had a lumpectomy. The cancer was confined to the lump in my breast and did not spread to the limph nodes. I had a serie of 30 radiation treatments. My bone density is deteriorating, thus I would like to know whether I have to take osteobond 70mg weekly. Will arimidex contribute to loss of bone density? Thank you very much. Susan.

Been on Arimidex 26 months. Having numbness in hands and feet. Oncologist doesn't think it's related to Arimidex. Anyone have this problem while on this drug?

I just completed 5 years on arimidex and have been asked to be part of a study and go on it for another 5 years. Has cancer reoccurred in patients while they have been on arimidex, not due to the drug, but due to the cancer. In other words, does taking arimidex prevent cancer from reoccurring while a patient is on it?

Armidex may not prolong his growth period much longer with such an advanced bone age, it is a medication used to block estrogen effect, also used in breast cancer, there are concerns with the liver but if monitored carefully most have few side effects. However with a bone age of 17 1/2 growth is near completion. I would work with the peds endocrinologist and talk with them to discuss your concerns, plan of care and monitoring.

I started taking Arimidex about five months ago. Since then I have had many of the typical side effects such as hand/joint pain, neuropathy in my hands, hot flashes, wakefulness at night etc. However, my sight in one eye has also begun to noticeably deteriorate. I know, because I had my eyes checked and a new eye prescription just before I started taking Arimidex. I saw my eye doctor again last week and my vision has deteriorated from 20/40 to 20/70 (with correction) in just a few months.

Does Arimidex have to actually kill you vs. maiming you for life, in order to be pulled off the market? At 58, I may need a hip replacement because I took Arimidex for two years!
