Common Questions and Answers about Amphetamine narcolepsy

adderall

Avatar f tn Are there any anti depressants or non stimulant/amphetamine meds that will help with the sleep attacks & day time drowsiness associated with narcolepsy? I'm a naturally anxious person.. and going on something like Adderall or Ritalin is out of the question... unless maybe if I have to drive somewhere that day. Is there any way to correct the condition, like with antidepresants?

Avatar f tn i was wondering if i should be tested for narcolepsy, or if diagnosed with narcolepsy would they prescribe me to something similar to adderrall? if this were the case, being tested would not matter much if they would give me the same medications anyways. I just dont want to be misdiagnosed and on the wrong medication for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn Hi, Adderall is a psychostimulant or sympathomimetic amine composed of mixed amphetamine salts. The drug is used primarily to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. Numbing of the hands and feet may occur with taking a larger dose of adderall than prescribed. You must get this examined to make sure that you are not suffereing from any side-effects of adderall usage. keep us posted and let us know if you need any more information.
Avatar f tn Hi, Adderall, a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, can stimulate the central nervous system and affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. This is usually indicated for narcolepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and may be used for migraine prevention. Hope this helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with "Idiopathic hypersomnia" which means I can sleep round the clock. I'm always fatigued and sleepy (unless medicated with a prescribed amphetamine). Can my sleepiness actually be the result of either my longterm use (15+ years) of Neurontin (for epilepsy) or longterm use (10 years) of Prozac? There are problems associated with going off either of these meds, but it is very difficult to get through life feeling chronically sleepy and drugged.
Avatar f tn I began very heavy and daily use of amphetamines about 7 or 8 months ago. when use, i will crush up the amphetamine salts, as well as Adderall XR (which is a much more powerful pharmaseutical). Recently I have been diagnosed with a serious kidney infection. My only problem is that the antibiotics are not working in the manner that they are supposed to. I have been sick for a week and a half, and still have symptoms.
Avatar f tn Every medication have some side effects Amphetamine is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). How should I take amphetamine? It is the basic question that we need to know. Take amphetamine exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions , ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Do not take amphetamine in the evening because it may cause insomnia.
Avatar f tn Narcolepsy is a CNS disorder and is thought to also be caused by an autoimmune disorder. Causes: current thinking is that a group of cells in the brain responsible for sleep-wake behavior is damaged or absent. (gosh do you think the MS lesions might also damage this area for people unlucky to have both!) Tests: The spinal fluid of most patients with narcolepsy shows the neuroprotein lacking or deficient. The neuroprotein is "hypocretin".
Avatar n tn the only thing I could find on this drug is it is for sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and it said it may become habit forming if taken longer than prescribed or if more than prescribed is taken. so it does seem to be a med that will affect your sleeping but i can't say if he is abusing it...have you asked him why he runs out early? more people will be on that may have more info later...the weekends are slow sometimes... sorry i couldn't be more help..
Avatar f tn Yes, I'd imagine that's what Sarah meant. Adderall works well for many kids with ADHD, but it isn't something I'd ever take, personally. It's amphethamine-like, or maybe a real amphetamine, and can cause addiction or dependence. Withdrawal can be bad. Sometimes we need these things, but I would try anything else, or go without, first. Sarah, have you tried Amantadine? PastorDan's thread mentions this, and Shoshin describes it. I did try it and it had zilch effect.
Avatar f tn First off Adderall is used to treat narcolepsy and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, it can become addictive. It contains a combination of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine that are central nervous system stimulants that affect chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. These medications were NOT prescribed for you and it would be wise for you not to take the 4 that you have left and give them back to your friend.
1198256 tn?1265185306 My doctor started me on xanax .5 three weeks ago and then raised it to 1.0.. now I feel as if I can't go without it at all even when I'm not having a anxiety attack. I told my doctor that I feel like I just got to have them and she told me that they are highly addictive but I still need to take them because of my anxiety and on top of that I'm taking amphetamine for narcolepsy which is highly addictive.. but it cause the high anxiety...
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
1287446 tn?1313947638 Hi everyone. I am not familiar with Narcolepsy or sleep disorders in general but my sleep has always been different. Typically, I fight daytime sleepiness with caffeine. In prior years, the caffeine has been a lot but I’ve lowered it significantly.
Avatar f tn I have Narcolepsy- My vitamin B 12 level is 235- should it be higher for my condition?
Avatar f tn Although the pt has RLS and PLMS, the arousal associated with these do not likely explain EDS- given a short overall sleep and REM latency, consider narcolepsy clinically. I had 156 arousals, 110 spontaneous, the rest due to limb movement. I also spent most of my sleep time in sleep stages 1 and 2, whith REM episodes scattered randomly. I had no time in stage 3, and when I had REM sleep it was from wake to REM with no progression through the other cycles.
Avatar n tn The combination of this study and my first MSLT nap study produced a perfect pattern for diagnosis of Narcolepsy. Has there ever been a study to look at the coorelation between the 2 diseases. Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar f tn Im at a loss. My husband was a heroin/cocaine/amphetamine user for 8 nearly 9 years. He has been clean for 2 1/2 years and now only takes methadose 11ml daily for pain relief, due to a spinal fusion a year ago. He has just been diagnosed with cataplexy and after investigation into why he keeps falling asleep during the day even after a good nights sleep, the neurologist has decided his PAST drug use has caused brain damage that is irrepairable.
1861446 tn?1320445285 Hi ppl. I've been on amphetamine since I was 14. I'm 28 this month. That's half of my life. I've been working hard the past 12 months to gain funding for rehab. I'm curious if anyone else has a similar story to me and even more curious to know whether life can actually feel worth living ever again..
Avatar m tn Adderal is an amphetamine, but it shouldn't test as "meth" in a good drug screen. I happen to have a urine drug screen form right here, you can test "negative". Or positive for cannabinoids, cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, opiates, etc. The amphetamine and meth are two different "check boxes", and you should have tested positive for amphetamine. If you have a prescription in your name that shouldn't be a problem. Best wishes.
