Avatar f tn PS your doc sounds like s/he is on the ball -- that's good! If you would share with us what you learn about whether amoxicillin is as effective as doxy, that would be very interesting -- It sounds like your doc is quite observant -- excellent!
Avatar f tn Quite interesting, indeed! This article reads to me as trying carefully to reframe the current so-called 'mainstream' view of why those who are supposedly cured (after a few weeks of doxycycline) continue to have symptoms of Lyme. The so-called 'mainstream' view held by the CDC and IDSA is that after the standard treatment for Lyme, any continuing symptoms are due to an over-active immune system reacting to a now-gone Lyme infection.
Avatar m tn s son had the same rash and his doctor prescribed him amoxicillin 3x/day and said it had to be AT LEAST 14 days for lyme treatment. I looked online and that is what I found also. I am concerned my son was not on antibiotics long enough and that symptoms will show up later when it is harder to treat. Should I call the doctor back and try to get him on another 14 days of treatment or would that be too late at this point? Please any advice would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn *Augmentin -- Standard Augmentin cannot exceed three tablets daily due to the clavulanate, thus is given with amoxicillin, so that the total dose of the amoxicillin component is as listed above for amoxicillin. This combination can be effective when Bb beta lactamase is felt to be significant. *Augmentin XR 1000 -- This is a time-release formulation and thus is a better choice than standard Augmentin. Dose -- 1000 mg q 8 h, to 2000 mg q 12 h based on blood levels.
Avatar m tn My St. Bernard was diagnosed with Lyme Disease Monday evening. She was limping for a few days and then it stopped and came back. We gave her an aspirin and it made her very sick, so we took her to vet and the the vet did a blood test that came back positive for Lyme. He gave us Amoxacilin and a med to settle her stomach. My problem is this, She is limping much worse today then she was on Monday. She is eating but not as much previous to Lyme.
Avatar f tn With joint pain. My doctor tested me for Lyme disease and it was positive. I took doxycycline For 12 Days till I developed a mild rash on my face. My doctor took me off and put me on amoxicillin for 2 more weeks. My question is if I have contacted syphilis from this exposure would all these antibiotics cure it? And would an 95 day hiv negative oral swab be considered conclusive? Please help put my fears behind me.
1691275 tn?1322327507 I've been taking amoxcillin for a suspected Lyme infection for the last week (of a 3-week course), but my new doctor showed me some research that indicates doxycycline is better antibiotic for Lyme and its attendant infections - so he gave me a 3-week prescription. What he forgot to tell me was whether I should finish the amox first or if I can just switch right over to doxy. Anyone have experience with these two antibiotics? Thanks!
1067297 tn?1255030564 ve read about patient experiences, amoxicillin is a popular choice for treating Lyme, especially in younger patients. Doxycycline is also widely used in treating Lyme. I've taken neither of those two. Depending on if/what co-infections the patient has, other meds/combinations can be effective. I've been on several different antibiotics, including minocylcine, azithromycin, and factive.
Avatar f tn Sounds like it's lyme related to me, lyme disease is known to cause skin sensations like "tingly" feelings although i've never read about one like you have. I don't want to scare you - but that sounds like it could also be related to a co-infection you received during the tick bite. However, symptoms can still develop while on doxycycline treatment as i've also had many new symptoms develop while on it.
1138687 tn?1548643978 Doxy is the usual approach when it's a very recent bite, as yours seems to be. Biaxin is the same as clarithromycin, Dr Burrascano's 'treatment guidelines' posted on the ILADS website say: "First-line drug therapies for Lyme disease may include (in alphabetical order): oral amoxicillin, azithromycin, cefuroxime, clarithromycin [=Biaxin], doxycycline, and tetracycline. These antibiotics have similar favorable results in comparative trials of early Lyme disease.
Avatar n tn Doxycycline ("doxy") is often used to treat Lyme and other tickborne illness. It was prescribed for me, but due to some other problems, I have not tried it. It can be hard on some people's digestive systems, but that doesn't happen to everyone, and I think it's considered one of the more effective treatments. I don't think it matters whether the infection is new or not; doxy is still effective if tolerated, so I have read. Another good question for your MD.
Avatar f tn If you wish I know a colloidal silver that will do wonders for your lyme. I have been taking it for 2 weeks now and I am better now then I have ever been in 30 years.
Avatar m tn I had Lyme disease 10 years ago, and had 2 months of doxycycline. The symptoms gradually went away over the next 6 months. My western blot and ELISA Lyme disease blood tests are still positive, even though I do not have symptoms. Do I still have Lyme disease? An allergy doctor I had been seeing last year told me I still have Lyme disease, and he said that's why my allergy is bad. He convinced me to take antibiotics again, but the blood tests are still positive.
1580703 tn?1651904887 If you are lyme positive you should follow up with a western blot to check if the bands are correct for lyme. If so They they treat you with Doxycycline for about two months and see how you do. You could have some of the co-infections that go with a tick bite such as Erlichia, Bartonella, and babesiosis.
984138 tn?1359813073 doxycycline is what they treat you with for lyme right? Odd thing but my gyno called me in that medicine for a common thing probaly yeast infection... i just talked to the recpetionist not the actual doctor because it was very minor she said. But anywho should i take it? Obviously i should but should i take it when im a positive for lyme but have no LLMD yet and my ID just got back to work today so shes catching up with everyhting and havent looked at my results yet.
7954400 tn?1395710806 Likely diagnosis is Lyme Disease. Antibiotics commonly used for Lyme include doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil.
Avatar f tn Lyme can lurk, and a strong immune system can keep it in check for a very long time. I would not assume that the current course of abx for your throat will fix Lyme, because Lyme doesn't go by those rules -- it's not like most bacteria and needs different abx and longer treatment, just like tuberculosis does (18 months minimum treatment, on particular meds).
Avatar f tn doxycycline is the first choice, explained below in the quote from ILADS. But sometimes a doctor will rx amoxycillin or Ceftin if it's summer and the patient shows an unwillingness to stay out of the sun or to take the simple precautions needed to protect from the sun while taking doxy. Doxy often (almost always) will give a sunburn to unprotected skin, even through windows.
Avatar f tn t take it anymore and I went to my doctor and she did blood tests to come to find out that my lymes was acting up real bad so she prescribed me doxycycline, but i didnt take it for a while because it would make me feel sick everytime i did. Eventually, I started taking it because I just felt horrible and could barely get out of bed.
Avatar f tn It's good to hear that you caught the infection early -- I would say if you have further symptoms after treatment is completed, to go back to the docs for retesting and perhpas further treatment. Lyme can be difficult to stamp out sometimes, and vigilance is the key. Retreatment can be done, with hope for success the second time around. It's a good question you ask about pregnancy.
Avatar m tn Patients treated with appropriate antibiotics in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover rapidly and completely. Antibiotics commonly used for oral treatment include doxycycline, amoxicillin, or cefuroxime axetil. Patients with certain neurological or cardiac forms of illness may require intravenous treatment with drugs such as ceftriaxone or penicillin. In a small percentage of cases, these symptoms can last for more than 6 months.
Avatar f tn Sometimes children get Lyme Disease and their very active immune systems hold it in check for many months and even years. A PA who treats Lyme told me that it often appears after puberty when hormone levels change. There is much controversy about Lyme Disease. The old belief, still held by many doctors, is that a positive IgM western blot signifies a new infection and a positive IgG signifies one that is over a month old.
9258519 tn?1404468525 guidelines here say 2-3 weeks (usually 3) for early Lyme and 4 weeks for late Lyme. ILADS guidelines say to take it a bare minimum of 4 weeks as Lyme bacteria have a 4 week cycle. Many will treat even longer as there are treatment failures even at 4 weeks. For late stage Lyme, a patient usually needs months or even years of treatment. Twelve days is probably just enough to stir up the bugs and make them mad.
Avatar m tn My LLMD insists that patients keep a separate, regular dr for non-Lyme stuff, but given that my life was taken over by Lyme, there isn't much that happens that is unrelated to it. And, I just haven't (knock on wood) gotten sick with anything else. I have an eye doctor (ophthlamologist) and specialists like that, but not a GP. I keep thinking I need one, but my last GP was a stuffed shirt who diagnosed my severe case of Lyme and babesia as 'menopause.
