Amoxicillin for pregnant women

Common Questions and Answers about Amoxicillin for pregnant women

amoxil

amox is the best antibotic to take while preg its usually the most common prescribed one for pregnant women i took it for 3 weeks in my 1st trimester and my bub is fine :) but be weary amox can cause yeast infections so if you do have any uncomfortable ness or swelling itching or unusuall discharge see a dr straight away before it gets worse cause it can be really horrible
Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies which have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester. The antibiotic is so much safer than the infection. a UTI is quite common in pregnancy and your doctor would not prescribe something to you that was not safe.
If you are on Amox, I highly suggest picking up Probiotic Yogurt or some Acidophillus as pregnant women are double as likely to get a yeast infection (had one from week 18 to week 23). Anitobiotics kill all the good bacteria which is why I am suggesting to take a probiotic supplement.
I've seen some pregnant women fill that at the pharmacy I work at, but it's always best to run it by your ob first. It may be worse to let the infection go on than it is to treat it. I know that there are some medications that you can safely take, but if you let something like an infection go on it can get worse and make you and your baby sick. Hope you feel better soon.
If you are worried about any drug you are taking while a pregnant you can enter it in on this site and it will tell the risk. Also you can always ask your pharmacist. Good luck and congrads! http://www.safefetus.com/Search.
From reading studies online, I see that penicillin’s are not effective against Chlamydia, but equally Amoxicillin is sometimes prescribed in pregnant women. Am I wasting my time taking it, and should I call the trip short (I plan on returning to the city in 6 weeks) or is the Amoxicillin likely to clean the infection up? If so, is there any specific follow up treatment I should pursue when I get back to the city?
We've had intercourse several times and nothing has come about from it. Here's the situation. She took two, maybe three amoxicillin pills over one weekend (on a saturday and sunday. she hadn't taken any pills before or after that weekend) we had unprotected sex on sunday afternoon for about 10 minutes. I did not ejaculate inside of her. I know that there is always a possibility of pregnancy, but I wanted to know how much a couple of amoxicillin pills would affect her birth control.
Studies have shown that the percentage of women getting pregnant while on the pill and antibiotics is exactly the same as the percentage of women who got pregnant while just taking the pill.
I recently had tonsilitis and my doctor prescribed me amoxillin. its perfectly safe and is a class A drug. (class A is the safest for pregnant women).
Also with the fever and tylenol, tylenol is consider the safest drug for pregnant women and if the fever goes over 101 or 102 than that can cause problems for the baby as well, good luck hope she gets better!!
I read that there can be complications later in pregnancy and even birth defects with pregnant women who had UTIs in their 1st trimester. Could this put me at risk or does this refer to women who are left with untreated UTIs? It is a bit confusing. I figured that if I am treating this early and being diligent about my antibiotics that this risk does not pertain to me. Should I go back to my GP in a week or two for a repeat C&S or wait till my first prenatal visit? Thanks for you time.
You could be pregnant, so you need to stop taking the BC until you know for sure. Don't take any meds without knowing if they are safe for women who are/may be pregnant. You can take a pregnancy test when you expect your next period! If you need assistance or a free test, check out www.birthright.org and see if there is one in your area (I'm a volunteer at my local one). We give free preg. tests and everything is confidential.
All I can find is information with pregnant women...frustrating..Also would this have anything to do with the new HSV viruses I have contracted??
I am 37 years old and also have vag strep. I can definitely understand your frustration. From my research, the following do NOT work. 1. Flagyl 2. Vaginal inserts (actually can increase strep bacteria) Please read the following article at www.wdxcyber.com/npapvg11.
Fewer than one woman out of every 100 women who use the patch will become pregnant with perfect use.** The patch may be less effective for women who weigh more than 198 pounds. Certain medicines and herbs may make the patch less effective. These include the antibiotic rifampin. Other antibiotics do not make the patch less effective.
I did find this, and its for pregnant women - Amoxicillin Amoxicillin belongs to a group of antibiotics called pencillins. Amoxicillin is a recommended treatment of Chlamydia infection during pregnancy by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, it is not the best antibiotic for eradication of Chlamydia in other categories of people. Augmentin is amoxicillin clavulanate, so its similar. Have you been diagnosed with chlamydia?
I took azithromycin and it did not cure it.
if its itchy it may be thrush, and that can be due to the hormones when your pregnant, just go to the chemist and they will give you something to use thats safe during pregnancy, probably canneston (sp), if its not itchiy an increase of vaginal discharge is quite normal, I had it everyday while pregnant
Amoxicillin is the right thing for a pregnant woman with Lyme. You cannot take Doxycycline when pregnant. I have heard many good stories of kids who got Lyme in utero who are doing great with antibiotics. Treatment makes all the difference. Planning to do the cord blood test is very wise. But if the baby tests negative, there is still a chance of infection. If s/he tests positive, then s/he will need amoxicillin. I have no idea for how long...are you aware of Dr. Jones in Connecticut?
Just to let you know, we are not doctors on this forum - we are women over 35 who are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or who have children. We can offer support and advice, but it is not a medical opinion. There is another section on this site where you can talk to a doctor - it is called "ask the expert" - there is a fee to ask a question in that forum. Good luck.
Hi, two things...
I've seen on many different medical websites that Amoxicillin does treat Chlamydia. In fact doctors prescribe it for pregnant women rather than Azithromycin. Confused now....
My first pregnancy ended in m/c at 5 1/2/ months. She said its ok for pregnant women to take.I am still taking my progestorones. Do any of you out there can give me any advise. It will be greatly appreciated.
Random other comment, you mentioned your period isn't due for another two weeks. Some women in between periods will experience cramps, it doesn't mean your pregnant. I've heard from a lot of women that right between periods, they will randomly feel cramping. But then again, this could very well be from the first time. I had massive cramps for a few days after my first time. I think you'll be fine.
Thursday I went to the doctor and I have an infection of poop cells in my pee. They put me on Amoxicillin of 500 Mg a capsule and I have to.take three a day for a week. I just hope it's not hurting my Baby. I haven't felt her.move today and i'm 19 Weeks and 1 day.
Yes there are several antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy and when nursing. I took Amoxicillin when pregnant and nursing. Tylenol and ibuprofen are also okay when nursing as both are used for women post c section as painkillers. Following my c sect I was allowed to take up to 4 extra strength Tylenol and up to 3 extra strength ibuprofen per day (24 hours). Do check with your doc or pharmacist though. It has been 3 years since my c sect so guidelines may be a bit different now.
pylori bacteria, and this combined regimen is of no benefit to them. For pregnant women, usage of Clarithromycin is not recommended, as it may harm the fetus. It is given only in special circumstances [under strict medical supervision] when no alternative therapy is available.
As the first response noted, the latest research has shown that most antibiotics do NOT affect the pill. That said, some women DO get pregnant while on the pill and taking antibiotics - but it's important to realize they would have gotten pregnant anyway. The reason is that the pill is just not 100% effective. When you compare the pregnancy rates of those on antibiotics and those not, there's really no difference.
I was diagnosed with strep throat 4 days ago and was prescribed amoxicillin. My doctor said there was a chance the anti-biotic could decrease my birth control's effectiveness. I'm on my period and my boyfriend and I did the deed last night and this morning. We did not use a condom and he did not ejaculate at all. To be safe I took the morning after pill (First Choice) at 10am. Around 4pm the same day I got a terrible stomach ache and had diarrhea.
