Amoxicillin for gonorrhea

Common Questions and Answers about Amoxicillin for gonorrhea

amoxil

Avatar m tn Amoxicillin is not usually given for stds. In fact, I don't know of any that it actually would treat. Most bacterial non-gonorrheal stds are treated with doxycycline 2/day for 7-10 days or Azithromycin 2g one time. For gonorrhea, you need a shot, I forget what it's called plus Ciprofloxacin. For viral stds, they have no cure although you may be able to reduce symptoms by taking antiviral medications.
Avatar m tn I have this dripping and this pain when i pee, I have sore throat too. Is this Gonorrhea? And then after i took amoxicillin twice a day for 2 days, the pain lessened, sometimes it's not even painful but still the dripping did not stop, what should i doo?
Avatar f tn I just got done with a prescription for 875 mg of amoxicillin twice a day for 10 days. Will that cure chlamydia and gonorrhea??
Avatar n tn Chlamydia is virtually never transmitted by oral sex, but even if it were, amoxicicllin is not reliably effective. There may have been risk for gonorrhea, but amoxicillin is not active against about half of all gonorrhea strains. The risk of any STD from a single episode of oral sex is very low -- higher with some partners than others, but always low, and I would not have prescribed any antibiotic at all.
Avatar n tn The next week I had a sore throat (unrelated) and went to my doctor and was given a prescription for amoxicillin. I began taking the amoxicillin 10 days after the encounter. 15 days after the encounter while still taking the amoxicillin, I had sex with my wife. We had sex twice that night, the only time since the encounter. The next week my doctor switched me to clarithromycin for my throat.
Avatar m tn The problem with your taking amoxicillin at this time is that a substantial portion of gonorrhea are now resistant to amoxicillin and if you were going to take the amoxicillin you would need to take at least 3 grams, along with a second medication to boost the antibiotic levels in your blood. As I said before, I do not recommend taking amoxicillin. The chances are that you did not get infected.
Avatar n tn Directly to the questions. 1) Gonorrhea and fellatio: In general, penile exposure to a partner's mouth is low risk for STD (much lower than vaginal or anal sex), but of the STDs that are seen, gonorrhea is among the most common. There are no data to estimate the numerical risk, but the large majority of exposures don't result in gonorrhea transmisison, even if the oral partner has gonorrhea of the throat. And gonorrhea is uncommon in heterosexual women.
Avatar n tn Yeah along with a 7 to 10 day course of Doxy for Chlamydia.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, amoxicillin is not recommended for any of these syndromes but could make their symptoms milder without curing the process. My advice would be to seek evaluation for NGU and gonorrhea at this time. If you were my patient, depending on the findings, I might then treat you with therapy for NGU (azithromycin or a week of doxycycline).
Avatar f tn I just got done with a prescription for 875 mg of amoxicillin twice a day for 10 days. Will that cure chlamydia and gonorrhea??
Avatar n tn Amoxicillin is not an optimal antibiotic for most STDs an is no longer the recommeded therapy for any STD. Although many strains of gonorrhea are now resistant to amoxicillin I would anticipate that about 70-75% of gonorrhea would be cured by the amoxicillin you were prescribed as would most chlamydial infections. This dose you were prescribed would also certainly prevent syphilis.
Avatar n tn Should i get tested for this? im already on augmentin and amoxicillin when i saw a doctor without doing any tests.
Avatar m tn Nonetheless, persons without symptoms can have gonorrhea and tests can be done in persons who do not have discharge. Further, the medicine the he gave you, amoxicillin, has not been recommended for gonorrhea treatment for over 25 years. Currently recommended therapy for gonorrhea is a single injection of ceftriaxone. Your problem does not sound like an STI but again, I suggest you see another doctor.
Avatar m tn So if i rub my penis against her vagina, without penetration, she is safe?
Avatar m tn Hello... I'm a 29 year old male, and I received unprotected oral sex about 2 1/2 weeks ago from someone I didn't know. I then had unprotected vaginal sex with another partner about 10 days later with no ejaculation. A few days later I developed head congestion and mild throat symptoms along with slight, intermittent throbbing in one testicle. No burning, itching, or discharge. I have also had what I assume is a varicocele for most of my life, but it has never given me any problems.
Avatar m tn So that evening, I took 1000 mg amoxicillin. The next day (Monday) I was tested for several STDs and showed positive for HSV-1 only (no chlamydia or gonorrhea). 2 days later I read that I may have been tested too early. Since I couldn't wait around for ever before I had to have sex with my wife, On Thurday, I started taking doxycycline 100 mg 12 hours apart and amoxicillin 500 mg 3 times per day. On Monday, I was tested again and everything was negative.
Avatar m tn Giving oral sex to someone with a penis puts you at risk for oral gonorrhea and syphilis. Both are fairly uncommon. It would be very unlikely for you to get oral gonorrhea, which usually resides in the throat, if the penis didn't get near your throat or your partner didn't ejaculate. Syphilis is only transmitted by direct contact with a sore. If your partner had a syphilis sore, and you put your mouth on it, you could get it that way.
Avatar n tn I just got treated for Oral Gonorrhea today, had sore throat for 10 days (not today) and only for the first couple days of it was I feeling slightly fluish, so my answer is, a persisting fluctuating sore throat and inflammation.
Avatar m tn I had a possible exposure of a one time unprotected oral sex i was the recipient and i am a male. What are my risks for std exposure and can amoxicillin cure gonorrhea and chlamydia ?
Avatar n tn Anyone have a good opinion on best antibiotics combo for across the board prevention of the bacterial STDs. What I mean is say u were exposed to something potentially risky and figure i may as well take post-exposure antibiotics. Which are gram positive STDS. Which are G negative. What combo is best to take care of everything non-viral?
Avatar m tn org/posts/HIV---Prevention/insertive-v-receptive-oral/show/1922236 The risk of some STDs is a bit higher -- low for all (e.g., gonorrhea, syphilis) and virtually zero for others (e.g., chlamydia). Your med student friend has some learning to do about STDs. I wouldn't have recommended any antibiotic treatment at all; and amoxicillin is a poor choice for STD prevention. What to do now?
Avatar n tn Augmentin has not been studied for its effect against pharyngeal gonorrhea, but in the doses used for strep throat and respiratory infections, it probably would cure it. Asymptomatic urethral gonorrhea is uncommon in men, and testing is reliable. The asymptomatic person can be sure he doesn't have it. There is no point in you being tested while taking augmentin. You could be tested a week or so after you finish the drug, to be sure that it is gone (if you had it at all).
Avatar n tn As for the effect of your amoxicillin on your tests, you are correct, in some people amoxicillin will cure gonorrhea or make tests negative. If you had gonorrhea and the amoxicillin were having an effect however it would most likely not only make your test negative but cure your infection as well, hence if your tests are negative, I would not worry further about oral gonorrhea. Statistically, your sore throat is more likely to be a viral infection than anything else.
