Amoxicillin for gonorrhea

Common Questions and Answers about Amoxicillin for gonorrhea

I just got done with a prescription for 875 mg of amoxicillin twice a day for 10 days. Will that cure chlamydia and gonorrhea??
I don't understand why you think you in fact acquired gonorrhea if the exposure truly was low risk. If not tested for it, you should stop the amoxicillin and get tested; and let the test results guide treatment. Amoxicillin is not reliable against gonorrhea, but in the dose you describe would be effective in about 80-90% of cases. Gonorrhea of the throat generally causes no symptoms at all and it certainly does not explain external neck pain.

most of them said they used Zithromax 500mg 2x a day for 2 days and their gonorrhea is gone. Can you tell something about these.
I self medicated and took 3 days worth of amoxicillin (500mg, twice a day). That didn't work, so I went to an urgent care and was prescribed Ciproflaxon. After 2 days of taking those (500mg), I went to the STD clinic. They said my gonorrhea test came up negative, but they thought that is what I had. They said my test came up negative because of the medications I took. It's been 7 days and I still have slight burning when I pee. My pain level was at a 10, now its around a 6.
1) I know that Amoxicillin 4x500 mg is presribed for preventing infection. Does it make sense to take Amoxicillin 4x500 mg before giving/taking oral sex as a preventive measure? 2) I read that Amoxicillin does not kill infection, but rather prevents it from growing. Yet it is used to treat gonnorea. Does it mean that something else must be used after using Amoxicillin? Thanks in advance!
g., gonorrhea, syphilis) and virtually zero for others (e.g., chlamydia). Your med student friend has some learning to do about STDs. I wouldn't have recommended any antibiotic treatment at all; and amoxicillin is a poor choice for STD prevention. What to do now? The risk of any STD was sufficiently low that I really don't recommend anything, assuming you don't develop symptoms like penile blsiters or open sores, or discharge of pus or mucus from your penis.
Although many strains of gonorrhea are now resistant to amoxicillin I would anticipate that about 70-75% of gonorrhea would be cured by the amoxicillin you were prescribed as would most chlamydial infections. This dose you were prescribed would also certainly prevent syphilis. I'm pleased to hear that you an your partner were both screene for STs and HIV recently and have exchanged this information.
Yeah along with a 7 to 10 day course of Doxy for Chlamydia.
Should i get tested for this? im already on augmentin and amoxicillin when i saw a doctor without doing any tests.
Augmentin is active against even the resistant strains. Augmentin has not been studied for its effect against pharyngeal gonorrhea, but in the doses used for strep throat and respiratory infections, it probably would cure it. Asymptomatic urethral gonorrhea is uncommon in men, and testing is reliable. The asymptomatic person can be sure he doesn't have it. There is no point in you being tested while taking augmentin.
dear doctor, could amoxicillin made the gonorrhea asymptomatic ? I was taking amoxicillin for 5 days for my sore throat after the csw contact. I think it was 250mg 3x daily.
She sent the sample out for analysis for gonorrhea and chlamydia and also for culture. Should I have also requested a swab? She gave my Cipro, 500 mg for 3 days. You think Cipro is a good choice? Are the concerns about drug resistance valid? My other concern is there anything else I could have missed? Is it possible (5 days post exposure) that this is truly just irritation from abrasion and not what I'm afraid it might be? Wouldn't the penis have healed in this time?
A syphilis test is conclusive at 6 weeks post exposure. Finally a blood test for chlamydia, gonorrhea and NGU are useless. You need to take a Urine STD test for those.
Amoxicillin is fine if it's the correct antibiotic. Dental infections can be from either an aerobic bacteria or anaerobic bacteria. Having the correct antibiotic is VERY important. I urge you to at least call your dentist for approval before you treat a dental abscess yourself. Amoxicillin may be fine, but you may need something like clindamycin instead. Also, it's very important that a FULL dose is taken for dental infections.
I had some amoxicillin so I took those for about 3 days (500mg twice a day). The problem didnt stop, so I went to the urgent care thinking I had a UTI. It was negative and they told me it might be an STD. I got tested, it was negative but they said that was probably because I had taken antibiotics. I got a shot for gonorrhea and had to take zithromax. A few days later I developed an eye infection and still have that eye infection.
It also might have prevented these infections, as well as syphilis if they were incubating. 2. You got cetriaxone and doxycycline. this is curative therapy for gonorrhea, chlamydia, NGU and preventative therapy for syphilis. You have no further risk for any of these infections. 3. No. I can assure you however that the symptoms you describe ( I do not doubt that you are experiencing them) are not due to the STDs noted above. 4. Your risk for HIV is low.
The doctor suggested to test my urine and swab sample for gonorrhea and chlamydia on top of testing for UTI.After the test results were ready I was shocked to find out that I am positive for both gonorrhea and HPV. My chlamydia result was negative. I also had UTI. I was given Rocephine 250 mg IM, azithromycin 250mg x 4 tablets for the gonorrhea infection and Macrobid 100mg twice a day for a week for the UTI. I informed my partner and had him tested as well.
odds are your anal issues are hemorrhoid related and not std related. see your provider for a proper work up for the anal symptoms. really no reason to think that the over treatment you were given by your provider without any + test results evidently didn't work just because you had 1 drink.
Is it possible for gonorrhea to have been latent in one of us for all of that time, and then to have suddenly flared up and been transmitted to the other, and then cause symptoms in both of us at the same time? This seems really unlikely to me - the only thing that seems like it could have brought it on was that both of us were fasting for Ramadan in the period immediately following the last sexual encounter.
But 10-15% are resistant. Augmentin xr has not been studied for its effect against pharyngeal gonorrhea, but in the doses used for strepStrep throat , it probably would cure it.
Nonetheless, persons without symptoms can have gonorrhea and tests can be done in persons who do not have discharge. Further, the medicine the he gave you, amoxicillin, has not been recommended for gonorrhea treatment for over 25 years. Currently recommended therapy for gonorrhea is a single injection of ceftriaxone. Your problem does not sound like an STI but again, I suggest you see another doctor.
Potential co-infection with gonorrhea increases the possibility...but which is more likely? Complications with Gonorrhea, HIV infection or side effects of the treatment? Doc ran new base line tests.
But I’ve read here that gonorrhea can infect the prostate and that it is common for gonorrhea to be asymptomatic or for symptoms to appear late. There is no DNA test available here and doctors will not do a swab in the absence of discharge, so the best I could do was a urine culture, which showed no growth and no WBC, RBC, puss, nitrites, protein, etc. I did have some very fleeting (i.e.
I had unprotected oral sex from a girl 3 months ago, and I just learned that 2 months ago she tested positive for gonorrhea. Before I learned of this, I had unprotected oral and vaginal sex with another girl, 1 month ago. Several days after she developed white spots on her tonsils, and had a slight discharge from her vagina. She said she normally has a discharge, but this one was bigger than normal.
I suspect your sore throat is not a manifestation of oral gonorrhea since most oral gonorrhea infections are asymptomatic, this testing is a good idea. As for the effect of your amoxicillin on your tests, you are correct, in some people amoxicillin will cure gonorrhea or make tests negative.
Can it be because of my menstruation delay? Or because of Amoxicillin? I had Amoxicillin for my cold at 62th day (runny nose, wet cough, fever for 4 days). I read that these respiratory things do not relate to HIV and these are now disappeared, continued only for 4 days, but only those 6-7 red small spots are still remained there untill now.
About two weeks later my urine felt like it had an extremely mild burning/tingling sensation. So I was able to get amoxicillin 500 mg and took that for 3 days with no real change, and then took azithromycin 500 mg one day and 1 gram the next just to be safe. I have not had a test nor am I able to get a test because i am in a remote location now.
but on the other hand, most gonorrhea would cause more prominent symptoms than you describe (more pain, overt discharge). Doxy is virtually 100% reliable for chlamydia and ~90% reliable for gonorrhea. So be alert for resurgent symptoms after you finish therapy, but if that doesn't happen, you can be confident the treatment was effective (if you had either gonorrhea or chlamydia). The conjunctivitis probably is coincidental.
