Avatar f tn My ex-husband is in the hospital again, this time with a high ammonia level and severe anemia. He quit drinking last August, and has gone through the fluid in the belly (ongoing issue), has bands in his esophogus. The doc got him all cleaned out overnight, but his ammonia level only dropped 3 points. It is still very high (149). We got the lab results this morning and checked his MELD score. According to it, he is at a 12. That confuses me, as we are watching him get worse.
Avatar f tn No, fish oil needs no refrigeration if it's in gel caps. It's the flax seed oil that needs the refrigeration.
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Avatar f tn I believe that we emit ammonia from our bodies due to to the imbalance in our stomach and digestive track. Are bodies cannot get rid of the excess ammonia properly so it comes out through our pores causing people to sneeze and itch. I'm not a doctor, but I've had this long enough to know this is part of our problem.
190885 tn?1333025891 I am assuming you have cirrhosis? (I have a list of cirrhotics but I know it doesn't include everyone with cirrhosis here). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and brain fog are two different conditions. "Brain fog" has nothing to do with ammonia levels. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
Avatar f tn Other wastes can contribute to changes in mental function and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. This can make correlation of patient symptoms to ammonia blood levels difficult. Not drinking and a good diet for the liver will help with many symptoms. I stopped drinking completely over a year ago and the last few endoscopies I haven't needed banding. I hope this is helpful and good luck.
Avatar m tn Since then I had my first experience with a high ammonia level of 98 in 2014 which put me in the hospital, almost in a coma state, for 5 days. Lactulose, Lasix & Spirolactone were given. After being released, it took a week when I returned to the hospital, now I was put on Xifaxan along with the other three meds. All has been well until Feb. 14, 2016 when it hit me again, ammonia level of 250, survived.
Avatar n tn Hi there, Tammy is right. But, specifically the guidance says "Room temperature storage up to 30 days, if refrigeration is unavailable" Note: if refrigeration is unavailable Personally, I feel this does not include varying room temperatures and I would not advise anyone to leave it out in hi (hot) temperatures. But, that's my personal opinion. Would only feel comfortable to do something like that if I knew the temperatures at which the forumula/medicine would change.
Avatar f tn A problem my friend with Hep C and i have encountered is that consumption of animal protein caused an ammonia buildup. I would wake up to the constant smell of ammonia everywhere i went. Since i am mostly vegetarian, and only break this rule with fish a few times a month, i was careful to note that the ammonia smell only occurred after eating fish. My physician tested me and found that i definitely had an ammonia buildup and i should stop eating animal protein.
Avatar n tn He was pretty stable until last Christmas, and his health has seriously declined since then. We are having a really hard time keeping his ammonia levels under control, despite following his liver doctor's orders to the letter. He is normally on 3/x daily of 30 m/l lactulose, and when his ammonia ticks up (as we can tell from increased cognitive impairment, decline of motor skills, etc.), we provide it to him every 2-3 hours until symptoms improve. Except that they often don't.
Avatar n tn My husband is a liver patient. He is on the list and has been called four times. Unfortunately, he has been unable to get a good one. From April 7 to October 7 he was in the hospital. He had to have surgery due to a small bowel obstruction which was most likely brought on by his double hernia operation. He is home now, but all day has been throwing up. He is confused a little and I am concerned because he does get encephaloptic. I am worried he has another sbo.
Avatar n tn At the age of 36 she had to have a complete gastrectomy(entire stomach removed) due to massive polyps. One year ago she started developing high ammonia levels, range from upper 60's to 110. Massive headaches seem to accompany the elevated levels. She has had liver function tests and biopsies for years now and have determined the problem isn't her liver. They prescribed lactulose and Xifaximim(antibiotic given to liver disease patients, might have the spelling wrong).
10064121 tn?1415176073 The lactation specialist at my hospital said it's good for 12 hours no refrigeration. 36 hours refrigeration. 1 month in the door of a normal freezer. 3 months in a deep freeze.
Avatar f tn He was admitted Monday night with severe confusion. His ammonia level was 152 and WBC/RBC and hemaglobin were extremely low. Treatment was started immediately to lower the ammonia level. Wednesday was 149, yesterday was 230 and today was 190. The doctor said it isn't responding to treatment, although the medicine definitely is keeping him cleaned out. They gave him platelets last night, but the level dropped even lower today.
Avatar f tn Do any of you know of any information regarding overseas transplants? My fiance has Hep C - (diag 2005). We went to the closest transplant hosp back then, but other then his routine testing and more meds, we haven't heard any more about his status for transplant. He tried the interferon, but was unable to complete the treatments after 3 attempts. Doc said it did more damage to his liver.
Avatar n tn Today he fell and hit his head. He is extremely confused - ammonia levels seem to be close to 200. I have tried everything to help him. He's got Hep C from a blood transfusion in 1978. The medicine did not work for him. How much longer can he go on? .....
Avatar f tn After refrigeration, if my baby does not finish all the breastmilk, how long is it good for at room temp???
219241 tn?1413537765 s FDA) say that it should be refrigerated too. Australia is the only country to decide that refrigeration is the best way to store under 25 C. (77 F) There are many arguments about whether this correct. It is a hormone, a very sensitive one so it makes sense to me. I know that we are about to get 'blister packs' which will be much better for dispersing and avoiding condensation problems from in and out of fridge, and contamination from handling.
Avatar n tn My labs according to my Dr are usually close to perfect, yet my ammonia level does fluctuate up and down. I am on Lactolose (sp?) I was a heavy drinker, and went in to renal and hepatic shut down. I was told that my liver looked like someone rubbed it with glass sand paper. I quit drinking over 500 days ago, but what worries me is that in most cases of cirrhosis the liver shrinks, but mine is swollen causing me severe upper right quadrant pain. I am on a Fent patch and dilaudid as needed.
Avatar m tn Because levels of ammonia in the blood and brain are elevated in these patients, the most popular strategy currently used to manage and treat HE involves reducing ammonia production. Traditional ammonia–lowering strategies include the use of certain sugar molecules that are not absorbed into the body (e.g., lactulose) or certain antibiotics (e.g., rifaximin), both of which reduce the production of ammonia in the gastrointestinal tract. You can't do this alone.
Avatar n tn There is a slight advantage to Pegasys (alfa-2a) The Pegasys needs refrigeration.
5901196 tn?1395543909 Hello everyone. Tomorrow is my 1st Dr. appt. since I found out about the ammonia in my blood. Thanks to all of you for your help. and especially the 2 of you that put up the list of questions for me to ask my Dr. Very, very helpful. Also, to those of you that reached out and helped me PERIOD. I feel ready to go in the Dr.'s office and sound like I'm knowledgeable and am able to intelligently participate in my treatment and all that I may be facing.
