I believe that the lactulose reduces the ammonia in your gut and brain and that's why it is important to take, if the ammonia gets too high it can cause you to have problems thinking, driving, cooking etc. I am not as good as explaining things as Hector so I have taken one of his explanations and am pasting it here. I also just read an explanation that the lactulose helps your body do the job the liver would do if it was working right.

I know this sounds gross, but try drinking some apple cider vinager once a day. I had the same problem that u have. What u have is high ph levels and high ammonia levels. I had a nurse tell me about the applecider vinager. Also try wearing painty liners that r deorderant type. Hope this helps you.

then the next day i drank 2 bottles of water in a row and the same thing happened. it let up after a few hours, i was feeling a little better and started drinking more water... same thing happened again but worse... then went though the same thing the next day but it was worse, and i wasnt connecting it was the water... by chance my husband found this sight and was reading about water being an irritant.

It can be treated with diuretics-fluid pills, but the easiest way to lower the levels is to start drinking more water. The more water in, the more urine made, and the more ammonia excreted out-unless you have kidney issues. Recommended amount of water per day is 8- 8 ounces glasses. I Hope This Helps.

m being put on Lactulose to assist in my memory loss and falling, as in ending up in the ER falling.
