Ammonia levels hep c

Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia levels hep c

ammonia

Avatar f tn I know that Hep patients need to be monitored for elevated ammonia levels, so why did it take me, a CNA of 17 years, to be the one who brought this to their attention? According to their charts they never checked the levels until after I called, this means that the nurse lied to me. Is it just me or did I possible just help to save my uncle's life? I am begining to think that this teaching University Hosptial is not what it is craked up to be.
Avatar n tn This is the Hep C Forum. While we talk about high ammonia levels, it is in conjunction with Hep C and the liver problems from there. yOu might want to make sure the Dr did a Hep C Antibody these to make sure she doesn't have it then go to the list of Communities ( touch Communities at the top of the thread) and find the health and wellness site for more assistance. Good luck and Blessings to you both.

Avatar n tn My ammonia levels have increased to 159. I am not at the present experiencing confusion but I feel as if I a in a fog and have muscle soreness all over. Can this be from the elevated levels. I do have stag 4 cirrohis and hep C but HCV load is not detectable at this time.
Avatar n tn My father is a Cirrhosis and Hep C patient, was diagnosed about 4 years ago, he's been doing good for the past few years, been in and out the hospital here and there. The last 3 weeks he's been in the hospital constantly due to his liver failure. He's in the hospital now, with ammonia levels at 400 and sodium levels really low. What are the consequences of this, and what can happen to him? What are the treatments they can give him to help him?
Avatar n tn They are usually low when fighting an infection (hep C) or when there is inflammation. Many doctors test their hep C patients for these levels as hep C can cause autoimmune disorders. Again, if he is not wanting to do further testing he probably thinks it is nothing to worry about. My levels have been low at times as well. This usually happens when I get joint and muscle pain from the hep C.
Avatar f tn They finally diagnosed him yesterday with high ammonia levels. All other tests are clear liver etc are fine. He had been suffering with urine problems and constipation for a few months before this started. My question is how long before he comes back to normal as he still is hallucinating, has no memory, acts very childlike and generally disturbed ( hes usually perfectly healthy other than epilepsy which is controlled with medication.
Avatar n tn Some people with Stage 4 (cirrhosis) can develop excess accumulation of ammonia due to compromised liver function, which can in turn cause confusion and disorientation. Damage to the liver caused by hep c can lead to too much ammonia in the blood which then affects the brain, a condition called encephalopathy.
Avatar n tn A family member has Hep C, Cirrhosis, and late stage liver cancer. Today he was found at his home, incoherent. He's now in a coma (Hepatic encephalopathy?). I just want straight answers on his chance of waking up again, and the likelihood of brain damage (and severity) if he does? As of now he's still resting, occasionally opening his eyes by reflex.
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Avatar n tn Yes it does. High levels of ammonia cause hepatic encephalopathy which in turn can cause confusion, sleepiness and forgetfulness. There are medications to help lower those levels. Speak to your hep doc.
Avatar n tn However if you choose a diet rich in fiber you may be able to skip that. It will depend on your ammonia levels which a blood test will reveal. You need to get to 3 good bowel movememnts a day to keep blood ammonia down, which is the largest cause of brain fog. If you treat for hep C with SOC you should also see a drop in this problem as your liver returns to normal function and enymes levels.
Avatar n tn Thank you, No the doctor claimed that his ammonia level was fine. It was at 15. Which according to the levels it sat right in the middle of the chart. I will definetly pick up the supplements you listed. He use to take Milk thistle lat the onset of his Hep c. But eventually stopped. Wasn'tsure if it was doing him anygood. I am not sure what Selenium is. Does it come in pill form and will I find it with all the other supplents? This Gaug Journal you ,mentioned is it on this site?
Avatar m tn My elevated ammonia levels usually responded well to Lactulose which helps reduce ammonia levels in two ways- it is a laxative so animal proteins that lead to ammonia formation spend less time in the digestive tract and it also changes the flora of the gut to decrease serum levels of ammonia.
Avatar f tn My brother is dying from Hep C. He went through a year of treatment with the interferon or ribavirin drugs, only to be free from the virus for about two weeks. It has now come back full force and the doctors say there is nothing that can be done and he will probably only live 6 more months. Did you know "Two companies have an effective 100% cure for Hepatitis C without interferon or ribavirin.
Avatar f tn I know that I have hep c. I know that it is genotype 2b. My viral load has gone up from 1 million to over 15 million since 2009. I just saw a gastro dr about it. I was very sick about a month ago and my ammonia level had gone up to twice what is normal. The dr always tells me that my liver enzymes are good. I want to know what stage I am in and what damage is done to my liver. I heard that your enzymes can be fine but damage is still happening.
Avatar f tn needed blood and platetlet transfusions. ended up with hepatic encephalopathy. Ammonia levels very high. Now she is on lactolose daily and her diabetes is high and never used to be a problem.
1130715 tn?1262100430 Of course I know no drinking, I have Hep C with stage 3 for Imflamation & Scar, but also have Systmiac Lupus and Fibermaylaga. So I take pain pills prescribed by my lupus Dr. is this hurting me?
190885 tn?1333025891 I am assuming you have cirrhosis? (I have a list of cirrhotics but I know it doesn't include everyone with cirrhosis here). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and brain fog are two different conditions. "Brain fog" has nothing to do with ammonia levels. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
Avatar m tn Many people are initially diagnosed incorrectly when hep c antibodies are found. Having previous exposure to hep c (antibodies) is different from having chronic hep c (presence of viral load). If your result shows no QUANT (quantifiable) RNA, in the case of your lab test, unquantifiable means less than 43, you are not considered to have chronic hep c, and no treatment would be necessary. Having antibodies alone does not require treatment.
Avatar n tn I have Hep C and cirrhosis of the liver. I am on the liver transplant list but it may be a while before they do that. As to your questions - Once your liver is scared it will not regenerate. You indicate a fear of the transplant but you can't "treat your liver nicely" and expect it to make a difference in the damage that has already been done. You can not drink! If that is a problem for you then you need to get help for that before you even think about a transplant.
Avatar f tn My mother has had Hep C for years. A year and half she was diagnosed with beginning stages of cirrhosis. Now she has the blotchy skin, confusion, high levels of ammonia. At first I thought she had early on set of dementia. The her dr. told her Wednesday that she had hepatic encephalopathy. What should I be expecting the next step to be?
