Avatar f tn Lean red meat on occasion is OK, but best to stick to your fish, chicken and legumes for your mainstay of protein. Snacky things can include cottage cheese, peanut butter, yogurts, hummus (but watch the salt if you purchase it and the crackers too). I have (had) pre-diabetes also and was urged to combine carbs (like a whole grain cracker/bread) with a protein and this seems to have normalized those borderline glucose levels too.
Avatar m tn We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.
1184842 tn?1264265187 Like OrphanedHawk, I have been in and out of the hospital with high ammonia levels, this has been extremely difficult for my husband, because in my confused and disoriented state I had refused to go to the hospital and sometimes it would take him up to 15 hours just to get me to the hospital. This isn't just about you, yes it is you going through this but try to remember that your family members or the people that is taking care of you are also going through all of this with you.
Avatar f tn His condition has been unchanged for 3 weeks. I called and asked what his ammonia levels were last week. The nurse gave me the run around and said they were within normal limits. Without the limits in fornt of me I don't know what they are. My husband went to Utah 2 days after I called, and all of a sudden they were checking ammonia levels and trating him with Lactolose, which I know is the appropriate Tx.
Avatar m tn t know much about the meds -- he has not been prescribed anything for ammonia because his levels seem to be under control. From a control stand point, as Bill1954 points out, it's important to stay away from red meat -- vegetable proteins and fish are the best sources of protein to help control ammonia. My husband has replaced much of his red-meat consumption with peanut butter, sardines, beans, and such. He personally abhors tofu, so for him, it's lots of nuts (almonds, cashews, etc.
Avatar n tn THIS IS THE INFO I HAVE BEEN GIVEN CONCERNING AMMONIA LEVELS. NORMAL IS 80 AND UNDER. MY AMMONIA HAS BECOME ELEVATED AS HIGH AS 800. WHEN MY AMMONIA BECOMES ELEVATED, ENCEPHALOPATHY SETS IN. THIS CAUSES ME TO BECOME CONFUSED, DISORIENTED, AND UNSTEADY ON MY FEET. THIS IS USUALLY THE POINT WHERE I END UP IN THE HOSPITAL.
Avatar f tn While elevated ammonia levels are seen in cirrhotic patients there can be encephalopathy with normal ammonia levels and there can also be no mental impairment in some patients with elevated ammonia levels. Basically, ammonia levels are of limited use for diagnosing cirrhosis or hepatic impairment. I would also think some other results of your blood work would have been out of range if you are cirrhotic or are suffering significant liver impairment.
412873 tn?1329174455 Does anyone know the name for the condition that leads to elevated ammonia levels in the blood? I think it happens when the liver is less able to remove toxins from the blood and can lead to confusion and other symptoms. Thanks for any input.
Avatar n tn Yes it does. High levels of ammonia cause hepatic encephalopathy which in turn can cause confusion, sleepiness and forgetfulness. There are medications to help lower those levels. Speak to your hep doc.

Avatar f tn I have a question, my mother passed away a couple of days ago and all I can think of was her last days at the hospital, my question is, when a person that is awaiting a liver transplant and has many other problems that are going bad and her ammonia levels keeps rising and out of a sudden they can't respond back to any questions, can they understand what you are saying to them?
Avatar f tn My mother has cirrohsis and has ascites and is struggling with high ammonia levels. She is being treated with lactolose and for now it is bringing her levels down. She reached 102 a few days ago and the lactolose has returned her level to 54. I am trying to find out how how and ammonia level can go before it is considered toxic and will cause her to go into a coma? I am also wondering in advanced cirrohsis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels?
Avatar n tn If your father has been in the hospital for 3 weeks with liver failure and his ammonia is still this high, it sounds pretty grim to me. Of course, I'm basing this on very limited information, and your father's doctors have the whole picture in front of them, so again, talk to them. Ask them point blank, "do you think my father is about to die?' As stated above, high ammonia levels cause "encephalopathy", extreme lethary and confusion.
Avatar f tn Since i am mostly vegetarian, and only break this rule with fish a few times a month, i was careful to note that the ammonia smell only occurred after eating fish. My physician tested me and found that i definitely had an ammonia buildup and i should stop eating animal protein. Once i dropped eating fish the problem went away. My physician told me that the ammonia buildup can lead to encephalopathy - brain fog - that can be very damaging, so i'm sticking to a vegetarian diet.
Avatar f tn Not sure about the answer to your question. But, there an app for that........ http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/ammonia/glance.
Avatar n tn He was advised to increase the lactulose to 30 ml twice a day for 5 days and then resume back to 15 ml twice a day. Is there any other medication for elevated ammonia? The side effects to lactulose are intolerable at times. He is experiencing depression, mood changes and personality changes. He did take the treatment of Ribavirin and Pegasys which was not effective.
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.

Avatar m tn Aim playing racket ball three times a week for well 2-3 hours. I notice this ammonia smell with my sweat. Now I always sweat heavy when I work out. But this ammonia smell new. Other than this smell aim fine losing some weight.
Avatar f tn Other wastes can contribute to changes in mental function and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. This can make correlation of patient symptoms to ammonia blood levels difficult. Not drinking and a good diet for the liver will help with many symptoms. I stopped drinking completely over a year ago and the last few endoscopies I haven't needed banding. I hope this is helpful and good luck.
Avatar m tn No, I don’t know any test codes for serum/plasma ammonia; sorry. HE can be tricky stuff to diagnose, from what I understand. It’s quite possible to have significantly elevated levels of ammonia and not present with HE, and conversely to have very low levels and significant HE. My understanding is that while ammonia isn’t always diagnostic for problems it is associated with them. He might want to reduce animal proteins for the short term, just in case.
Avatar n tn Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production. I suggest you talk about these possibilities with your doctors.
190885 tn?1333025891 ve seen other folks here say they stumble and have brain fog after tx for a while...i wonder if their ammonia levels were high....my alt asts are real good...
Avatar n tn At the age of 36 she had to have a complete gastrectomy(entire stomach removed) due to massive polyps. One year ago she started developing high ammonia levels, range from upper 60's to 110. Massive headaches seem to accompany the elevated levels. She has had liver function tests and biopsies for years now and have determined the problem isn't her liver. They prescribed lactulose and Xifaximim(antibiotic given to liver disease patients, might have the spelling wrong).
