In the past it was thought cirrhotics should keep to low protein, but recent evidence shows that it not the case. As Hector and paen53 pointed out above, adequate protein of the right kind is important for patients with cirrhosis. It's generally advised to keep red meats to a minimum, and derive protein from veggies, beans & nuts, & fish. My husband who has cirrhosis now tries to substitute red meat, which was his staple for years, with peanut butter, fish, eggs, and beans.
