My 88 year old father has a very very strong ammonia smell to his urine. We know he has kidney stone (that can't be remove due to health issues). I hate to take him to the doctor's for nothing, but could this be an infection?
My father was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatic encephalopathy about 5 years ago. He was pretty stable until last Christmas, and his health has seriously declined since then. We are having a really hard time keeping his ammonia levels under control, despite following his liver doctor's orders to the letter.
It probably has nothing to do with the gender of your baby, but if the bleach foams and fizzles it could mean there is a larger than normal amount of ammonia in your urine. This could indicate a health problem, or it could simply mean that you are dehydrated. It is also possible that, if the concentration of ammonia is high enough, chlorine gas will form.
I’m sorry to hear of your husband’s troubles. Is he currently taking Lactulose or anything to manage ammonia production? The Lactulose will be the sticky-sweet liquid that gives him the runs? He may need to have that adjusted, or possibly have another drug added to that regimen.
I was taking Nature Throid but discontinued because of a weird side effect- strong ammonia-smelling sweat while exercising. Has anyone heard of that before? I was concerned about my kidneys... And had to wash exercise clothes several time to get rid of the smell. What would cause this?
There is no research found that dying your hair while pregnant causes harm to the fetus. I dyed my hair with ammonia free hair dye and my son is completely fine. My best friend dyed her hair for her wedding photos while pregnant and her daughter is now 6 months and completely fine. It is safe.
While you are willing to offer her a part of your liver it would be unethical for them to put you at great risk for your own health when your mother is in poor health and may not survive.
The episode you mom had is likely hepatic encephalopathy it is a symptom of advanced liver disease. It is related to her elevated ammonia test result. I assume she is taking lactulose which causes bowel movement but also help to reduce ammonia leveled in her blood.
If you have AIH and ammonia build-up, you should be avoiding all protein, and you will be prescribed Lactulose or a similar drug to rid your body of ammonia. The ammonia isn't "in your brain", but it will cause brain dysfunction, confusion. It is essential for people with liver-related ammonia build-up to remove all protein. If this truly is your problem, your doctor should be explaining this. Please discuss this with him or her.
I smell ammonia. No one else can smell it. This happens off and on and in many different locations. I have read that this happens to people after a weight training session but I don't work out. It has happened when I was just sitting reading a book. I have seen my GP secondary to ill feeling for a year. The only abnormal labs are slightly elevated sed rate and slightly elevated WBC. I have muscle pain and weakness and extreme fatigue. My Doctor says he has no idea what is wrong with me.
Since then I had my first experience with a high ammonia level of 98 in 2014 which put me in the hospital, almost in a coma state, for 5 days. Lactulose, Lasix & Spirolactone were given. After being released, it took a week when I returned to the hospital, now I was put on Xifaxan along with the other three meds. All has been well until Feb. 14, 2016 when it hit me again, ammonia level of 250, survived.

I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week.
Will this be chronis? Is there hope to get it down and keep it down?
The test showed a slightly enlarged liver.
Could this be caused from spreading fertilizer, coloring my hair and spraying poision?
I cut out the protein except for fish, eggs and a few other things. Driking lots more water to flush my system. Any other suggestions.
So I believe I contracted HIV a couple months ago. My sexual encounter was one of lower risk.. I did use a condom for intercourse, but not during foreplay or oral sex. We are accustomed to dealing with personality issues from his ammonia levels. He was recently diagnosed with moderate Alzs although we think he has been undiagnosed for years. He is currently hospitalized and physically restrained because he became combative in the nursing home. His ammonia level was elevated but has come down. However, the agitation/aggression hasn't changed. The dr started him on namenda last week. Has anyone seen this kind of aggression from namenda?? HELP!!
She has been hospitalized three times for ammonia build-up and has been taking the meds (an oral pill and Lactulose) for a few months. Only a few good days in those months. Doctor says nothing more to be done now about ammonia because of other problems, heart valve replacement that can't be replaced, insulin diabetes. We are starting hospice tomorrow. All meds discontinued, except pain meds and anti-anxiety meds.

Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Try to avoid dye with ammonia. I am going to school for hair and make up and highly recommend you stay away from box dye! It's bad for your hair and even your health if you're going dark, but especially while pregnant. If you go into a salon, you will get better quality, it's safer, and they'll know what to use on you to avoid any sickness or heavy chemicals.
