Ammonia gas smell

Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia gas smell

ammonia

Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. There are some bacteria in the gut that produce hydrogen sulfide gas. Sometimes this gas is produced in such huge quantities that the sulfide oxidase enzyme in the wall of the gut is not able to oxidize all of it and convert it to thiosulfate. Hence the gas enters the blood stream and gets filtered by kidney into the urine. This gas has a smell of rotten eggs. Hope this helps. Discuss these possibilities with your doctor.
I am 12 weeks pregnant and have had the usual constipation that comes with pregnancy. With the use of prunes I have managed to pass stool for the past 3 days all of which smell like ammonia or chemicals. Does anyone know why this maybe? Could it be caused by the constipation? Should I be concerned about ammonia affecting my unborn baby? I am going to go to the doctor on Monday but am worried at the moment.
The perm smell is usually related to sulfur or ammonia products. You might also be detecting sewer gas leak if you have a cracked drain pipe some where. It might also be perm chemicals wafting through the air. Try to narrow it down.
It could smell like dog-poop, old cheese, ammonia, a burning smell, etc. The smell comes on, often, as a result of a cold or sinus infection. Some, not all, of these smells are caused by an anaerobic bacteria thriving in the upper sinuses, and I was able to remove mine with a Flip-Turn Sinus Flush, and many other people have had success with it as well: http://www.medhelp.
I have been experiencing the same thing for about a week or so--smell cigarette smoke when no smoke exists. Thought it was coming from the AC vent in my office but then started smelling it in car and at home. The strange thing is that when I inhale, sometimes the odor is so real I feel my eyes slightly burning as if I were sitting next to someone smoking. I am 40 yrs. old, never smoked, have been off depression meds for about 8 mos. No recent sinus infections.
I smell ammonia and have had this problem for about 2 weeks. I have use nasal sprays, mentholatum under my nose, a humidifier, hot, steamy showers and nothing helps. Mine scares me a little, I can smell a little and taste a little but that sweet smokey smell is what is most common except when I eat raw fruit, raw veggies, and sweets. I am worried I might not smell a gas leak or something.
Why do I have the constant smell of smoke in my nose. It used to be just an occasional thing, but lately it seems to be all the time. I am concerned that this is a symptom of something I don't know about. The smell is strong. I used to notice it about a half hour after taking my Allegra-D 12 hr. tablets, but now I smell it much more often. Am I going crazy or is there something to this I'm not aware of. Has anyone else experienced this? Please help?

What I have noticed, and what I have yet to read in my research is that WHEN ANY OTHER SMELL IS PRESENT, I CAN SMELL MY WEIRD SMELL IN PLACE OF IT. So, if a strong smell is present, I smell my smell stronger. It appears the smell comes and goes, but it actually gets triggered by other smells. I have spoken to my ENT and she hasn't got a clue. I wonder if there is some kind of study being done on this phenomenon?

It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please consult your doctor. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

When bleach is mixed with acids (such as those found in toilet bowl cleaners), it reacts with them to form chlorine gas, which can actually be deadly. When it is mixed with ammonia, it can create chloramine gas, another toxic substance. Short-term exposure to chloramine gas may cause mild asthmatic symptoms or more serious respiratory problems. It can even form a toxic gas when hyper-chlorinated by hot water. In the environment, sodium hypochlorite is acutely toxic to fish.
there is a distinct odour about him, not fecal, body odour or vomit. The doctor seems to think it is an ammonia smell. We have had so many blood tests, I have had a psycological examination done, showing he is entirely fine and not stressing about much. (Typical) . He has had all of the blood tests known to man, relatively normal, endoscopys, barium meal x ray, mri on small bowel, ultrasound on pancreas, kidneys and liver. No masses.
I personally believe it's coming from my digestive tract. Almost like a low ammonia garbage like odor. Very hard to describe. I haven't been told that I smell but it's obvious from the looks and sniffs I get. This isn't something that I can wash off my skin. It's not on my skin. It's coming from within. I can't wash my insides. I eat healthy. Fruits and vegetables. Raw vegetables like brocolli, cauliflower, carrots and tomatoes. Lot's of water.

It was raw sewage smell or strange ammonia odor(not women's odor, pure ammonia smell), sometimes dirty clothe smell sometimes just undescribable something. but time passes by I realized it was me. Because it followed me and when I bent down I could smell it coming from my body. Then I thought I had rectal problem so intestinal gas leaking, but it was not.
We live near the interstate, and depending on teh direction of the wind he gets sick sometimes from the smell of the asphalt/tires/cars on the freeway. I have tried and I can't smell anything- I've asked friends if they could smell anything, and no one has said yes yet. He always just thought it was something he had to live with. His sense of smell is driving me crazy. If we are talking he will ask me to go brush my teeth or use listerine.
Leave still holding your breath. Don't get any in your eyes. Never EVER use bleach and ammonia together. The two create poison gas. When you return a few hours later the mold will be killed. Do this every time you leave for work. Work your way around the room, starting at the highest point. A second spraying may be necessary. A simple mask will not help prevent lung damage from either chlorox or ammonia.
