I have undergone several tests as per my health checkup, and Physician has confirmed nothing seriously wrong, and advised me not to worry and continue to remain sober However, because of my minor symptoms and the ammonia level, and information on the web worries me for encephalopathy.Could you help me in:
-If Encephalopathy is suspected, then also suspect is associated cirrhosis, and portal hypertension? But USG says No portal hypertension.
-What could be the reason of high ammonia?
If you have AIH and ammonia build-up, you should be avoiding all protein, and you will be prescribed Lactulose or a similar drug to rid your body of ammonia. The ammonia isn't "in your brain", but it will cause brain dysfunction, confusion. It is essential for people with liver-related ammonia build-up to remove all protein. If this truly is your problem, your doctor should be explaining this. Please discuss this with him or her.
When I do gentle exercise or its a hot day, the perspiration from my arms, neck and other body parts smells very strongly of cat wee or ammonia. So much so that people around me constantly comment 'can you smell wee?' etc. Its really getting me down.
I am a 23 year old woman, vegetarian, currently taking Levothyroxine (just as background info)

When I do any cardiovascular exercise and start to get winded, I get a very strong ammonia like smell in my nose, like it is coming out of my lungs. This smell is not coming from outside my body, but internally. It's almost like the alcohol smell that goes up the back of your nose when you drink a shot of liquor.
I have had this all my life and just sort of assumed it was the same for everybody, but apparently other people don't have the same thing.
What could be causing it?
My first guess was that it was produced by some bacteria in the urinary track, which secrete urease and degrade urea into ammonia. I know two types of urinary bacteria that can do this: Ureaplasma and Proteus. Neither was found when I did tests. But actually I had some concerns about that laboratory.
I have read quite many notes in the Internet, where people say it's normal when urine smells like ammonia, that it may be due to diet or exercise. I think it's ********.
dizziness, fatigue, confusion, disorientation, swelling in lower extremities (exercise), chills, chest pain, tingling in left arm up to neck and jaw, severe muscle cramps and spasms, nausea, sometimes vomiting, and extreme SOB. My symptoms used to only last 2hrs after exercise and now have lasting any where from 2hrs to the whole next day. Symptoms slightly getting better after L-carnitine supplements.

But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I work in a paint department. I mix colors and clean up paint pretty much. Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. I've been using it every day for a few months to get the paint off of my hands. Could it have hurt my baby?
The first time they found the problem he lost 30 pounds and it went away well he has since gained that back and a little more and the fatty liver popped back up so now he has to go on a diet again although he does not drink the dr told him not to drink at all it could be very harmful because of the state his liver is in now.

Odor Changes
Urine normally doesn't have a very strong smell. If you get a whiff of something particularly pungent, you could have an infection or urinary stones, which can create an ammonia-like odor. Diabetics might notice that their urine smells sweet, because of excess sugar.

I smell ammonia. No one else can smell it. This happens off and on and in many different locations. I have read that this happens to people after a weight training session but I don't work out. It has happened when I was just sitting reading a book. I have seen my GP secondary to ill feeling for a year. The only abnormal labs are slightly elevated sed rate and slightly elevated WBC. I have muscle pain and weakness and extreme fatigue. My Doctor says he has no idea what is wrong with me.
