Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia and cats

ammonia

Avatar f tn Okay I have cats and my husband changes the cat box for me but my mom has a lot of cats and I never changed the cat boxes at her house but I could smell them ( she is also never home and leaves them there at her house with nobody there with them) she would clean the house but I still could smell it she also had a dog in the house.
Avatar f tn The pregnancy tracker says to not clean out your cats litter box due to parasites in the feces. I'm curious as to whether this is true for both cats AND dogs. I have a new puppy and she still occasionally poops in the cage at night. If I'm extremely careful of not getting it on me and washing my hands and arms thoroughly afterwards....will I be OK from catching those parasites? I'm approximately 7wks pregnant and I want to make sure I keep my growing baby healthy.
9171934 tn?1405180032 Kitties just have ammonia in the urine and while it smells super nasty it won't harm the baby because its not concentrated enough. Breathing is safe, touching not so much.
Avatar f tn The worry is toxoplasmosis which is a micro organism which can be contained in some cats with no signs. I have 6 cats and am a veterinary technician. Have someone else clean the box or wear gloves. You will be fine.
Avatar f tn Lunch meat I do but the cat box is a big no no. Its for a different reason than the lunch meat so I've never heard of the coralation between the cats eating raw meat and the litter box. I thought it was due to the ammonia but I'm not 100% sure. Either way I'd avoid it as much as possible.

741741 tn?1294284010 I dont have cats anymore and I am not pg, but when I took out my trash, the smell just made me think about... Wouldnt that be nice if while we were pg. we didnt have to change diapers!! lol Thanks again!!
Avatar f tn I agree with annajolly. We had two cats and got rid of them due to the ammonia smell and didn't want to even take the chance of the cat jumping into the crib and smothering the baby. Especially if they sleep with u they will think they can sleep in the babies crib too. It was easier for me to get rid of my cats cause I'm more a dog person anyway. Hope you work it out safely for your babies sake.
Avatar f tn So, a bit of TMI. I'm 8wks with my first and am noticing a strong ammonia smell when I use the bathroom and my belly is pretty hard and bloated. Anyone else experienced this? I plan to call my Dr tomorrow and also have an appt for my first ultrasound on Friday. Hoping I just need to drink more water but def really worried until I can see a Dr.
Avatar f tn The vet who was talking to the couple and she went into the room where the catboxes were, and commented on the smell, and she had handheld meter that she set down on the floor. It measured ammonia in the air. OSHA has limits of something like 25 ppm for people working in industry, apparently over that amount of ammonia in the air is bad for the lungs. As they were talking, the meter went over 25, then over 40, then over 60, then I think it stopped in the 70s or 80s.
Avatar n tn The shedding you'll have to live with and just brush her daily. Is she receiving a good quality cat food (i.e. not one of the grocery store brands that contains as the main ingredient ground corn?). As far as the inappropriate urination, make sure you clean up the area so the smell of the urine doesn't remain (don't use ammonia). The cat will continue to be attracted to these places.
7891785 tn?1397532007 Ammonia can be harmful but cover your face and wear gloves. The real risk is contracting toxoplasmosis. Which is food borne but also can be caused by exposure to feces. I have a cat, and scoop the box every couple days. Its not a big deal.
9138366 tn?1410253633 I agree, cats walk in their own feces and pee in the litter box and can be unsanitary around you during pregnancy and newborns. Their pee has ammonia and their feces has a specific bacteria that is harmful to pregnant women. I have a white chinchilla that Is like a baby. She likes to hop on my belly which she never has before.
Avatar f tn Oh and when can i get her fixed cause her urine is starting to get the ammonia smell and im not liking it too much.
Avatar f tn If certain foods make you sick, don't eat them. And most of the things you hear about cats and pregnant women and babies is old wives tales. So don't get rid of kitty. However have someone change the litter box, due to risks associated with that.
Avatar f tn I agree. Take him to the vet because it could also be related to health problems. If they feel pain while urinating in the box, they will certainly associate the box with something bad, something they need to get away from because it's causing pain and discomfort. Cats with UTI or even other issues not related to the bladder, like Inflammatory Bowel Disease (I'm the owner of an IBD cat) can urinate outside the box.
Avatar f tn It's not the smell, it's an airborne virus. I've talked to my midwife about this since we have a sandbox (which ends up being a community litter box) and she said that since I've had cats most of my life, I'll probably be okay and so will baby, even if I clean the litter box daily. She did say, as a precaution, to wear a bandana or something over many nose and mouth while doing so.
Avatar f tn They were best friends and used to snuggle in with each other, played together, neive went missing on Saturday and all boots done was pace the house and cry, neive came back on Monday morning and ever since boots has hissed and tried to attack her!! We can't have them in the same room because neive is scared and boots attacks..... does anyone know why this is happening and how I can stop it??
Avatar f tn s not the problem. The problem is the pee and ammonia in the poo. If you use a mask like dentists use and gloves. Or just cover your mouth and nose with a plastic bag. (Don't suffocate) and clean it. Then you're fine. Otherwise you'll have to send the cat out. Eventually I did. I always refused to take my cat out but it became a hassle to be taking extra caution.
Avatar m tn What can cause a ammonia smell in sweat and colon? and raw skin lines on each side of the scrotum between the inner thighs and pus bumps.
Avatar m tn What can cause a ammonia smell in sweat and Colin? the girl had the same smell.
Avatar m tn My liver disease also caused my serum sodium level to drop off (a condition known as Hyponatremia) and a low sodium level can produce a dementia similar to high ammonia levels but is more difficult to treat (at least in my experience).
Avatar f tn I have undergone several tests as per my health checkup, and Physician has confirmed nothing seriously wrong, and advised me not to worry and continue to remain sober However, because of my minor symptoms and the ammonia level, and information on the web worries me for encephalopathy.Could you help me in: -If Encephalopathy is suspected, then also suspect is associated cirrhosis, and portal hypertension? But USG says No portal hypertension. -What could be the reason of high ammonia?
Avatar f tn Tonight when i googled having a new baby around a cat there was good and bad, but the bad was really really bad. Including horror stories of babies getting really sick and even some of babies being killed by cats. Am i the only one who now has a healthy fear of Google? It seems to make me more paranoid an freaked out then it helps. I do believe i'm gonna leave the baby questions to my doc and you lovely ladies.
1008841 tn?1293598960 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Flowerchild: you can calculate your own MELD score if you have a copy of your lab reports from bloodwork by using this site: http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. He does not eat much as his taste buds are totally out of wack. Most foods taste very salty. And of course he does sleep alot.
Avatar f tn I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I work in a paint department. I mix colors and clean up paint pretty much. Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. I've been using it every day for a few months to get the paint off of my hands. Could it have hurt my baby?
