Avatar m tn Hello, I am 35 years old and have a big problem. I don't really no why, but I started to feel bad smell on my skin and hairs. They had many problems wiht heart, and abdominal organs and also polycystic kidneys a polycystic liver. I do not no, if I have that as well.

Avatar f tn Her condition is probably due to troubles with protein metabolism, which result in ammonia building to toxic levels in her blood. This can muddle thinking and cause confusion and memory problems. The condition is known medically as ‘hepatic encephalopathy’. If she is compliant with her Lactulose, they might change her dosage, and perhaps change or add Rifaximin to her meds; this is an antibiotic that helps some people with the condition.
Avatar n tn The skin on my forearms tears and bruises very easily. The tears bleed profusely and develop thick scabs and large bruises. They are unsightly and heal slowly. I have had blood testing and appear to have no strange illness. The skin on the rest of my body does NOT do this. My dermatologist recommended vitamin C serum to improve my skin and vitamin K cream to help the bruises. He also prescribed ammonium lactate lotion for my dry skin.
1008841 tn?1293598960 Hi there, I once had the same question you have now. I believe that the lactulose reduces the ammonia in your gut and brain and that's why it is important to take, if the ammonia gets too high it can cause you to have problems thinking, driving, cooking etc. I am not as good as explaining things as Hector so I have taken one of his explanations and am pasting it here. I also just read an explanation that the lactulose helps your body do the job the liver would do if it was working right.
Avatar m tn What can cause a ammonia smell in sweat and colon? and raw skin lines on each side of the scrotum between the inner thighs and pus bumps.
Avatar f tn t think it should effect your cervical mucus in a negative way however everyone can react differently. The Ammonium Chloride is listed as an expectorant so if anything it should thin and increase your cervical mucus vs drying it up. That being said I'm not sure if the ingredient list above is accurate to what is in your cough syrup. If you post those ingredients and if it says what they are for ex. expectorant vs decongestant etc. I would be able to give you a better response.

Avatar m tn My liver disease also caused my serum sodium level to drop off (a condition known as Hyponatremia) and a low sodium level can produce a dementia similar to high ammonia levels but is more difficult to treat (at least in my experience).
Avatar f tn I have undergone several tests as per my health checkup, and Physician has confirmed nothing seriously wrong, and advised me not to worry and continue to remain sober However, because of my minor symptoms and the ammonia level, and information on the web worries me for encephalopathy.Could you help me in: -If Encephalopathy is suspected, then also suspect is associated cirrhosis, and portal hypertension? But USG says No portal hypertension. -What could be the reason of high ammonia?
1008841 tn?1293598960 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Avatar n tn But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. He does not eat much as his taste buds are totally out of wack. Most foods taste very salty. And of course he does sleep alot.
Avatar f tn I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I work in a paint department. I mix colors and clean up paint pretty much. Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. I've been using it every day for a few months to get the paint off of my hands. Could it have hurt my baby?

Avatar f tn I copied and pasted this info from WebMD. IUn used "urine and ammonia" in the search field. Within the article was a subsection dealing with smell. Here it is. I hope it helps: Odor Changes Urine normally doesn't have a very strong smell. If you get a whiff of something particularly pungent, you could have an infection or urinary stones, which can create an ammonia-like odor. Diabetics might notice that their urine smells sweet, because of excess sugar.

Avatar f tn Hi, for the past two months my daughter and I all of a sudden got extremely dry scalp. we have tried everything. At first, I taught it was lice and I applied lice shampoo to both of our heads. That did not work, so next I tried apple cider vinegar, natural drandruff shampoo, head n shulders,, expensive shampoo from the salon, I don't know what else to do. Our heads itch all the time. It looks like we have dandruff all thru our heads, alot!!!!!
Avatar n tn Posted by another member: "Lactulose syrup is synthetic disaccharide and cannot be digested. It is 'eaten' by the bacteria in the bowel, causing acidification of the colonic contents. Creating an ionic exchange, drawing 'poisons' from the blood, and adding an ion preventing them from re entering the bloodstream. ie. ammonia is changed to ammonium.
Avatar n tn I smell ammonia. No one else can smell it. This happens off and on and in many different locations. I have read that this happens to people after a weight training session but I don't work out. It has happened when I was just sitting reading a book. I have seen my GP secondary to ill feeling for a year. The only abnormal labs are slightly elevated sed rate and slightly elevated WBC. I have muscle pain and weakness and extreme fatigue. My Doctor says he has no idea what is wrong with me.
190885 tn?1333025891 Take enough lactulose to have 3-4 bowel movements per day and your ammonia level will drop and you will feel better. Normal is 15-60 mcg/dL. It usually that a day or a couple of days for the ammonia levels to drop. I am not sure of your health status. High ammonia levels can also be caused by... *Reye syndrome. *Heart failure. *Kidney failure. *Severe bleeding from the stomach or intestines. Good luck!
