Avatar m tn Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and typically given for blood pressure or another circulatory condition. It is also used to assist kidney failure, by improving blood flow. However, it isn't the first choice or recommeded first choice in kidney failure for an otherwise healthy dog. The diet sounds fine, but feeding the daily volume of food portioned into 6 or 8 smaller meals given every 2-3 hours would certainly help the kidneys deal with it.
Avatar m tn 5 year old yellow lab that was recently limping, so she was taken to the vet and they did blood work and the blood work suggested Kidney Failure. Her creatine level was 4.1 and BUN/UREA 64 mg/dl. She spent 2 days in the ER getting fluids and medication. She's on amlodipine Besylate, Maropitant, prednisolone, doxycycline. She has struggled to eat, been very tired and isn't herself at all. Its been 4 days since she came home from the ER and she's slowly gotten worse.

11419535 tn?1418065092 Thank you all that have shared your stories and journey with this disease. I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with hypertension with kidney failure? Harley's bp are high and he's on the highest doses of medication they can give him. Because of the hypertension and now a heart murmurs the vet feels that giving him subq fluids will do more harm than good. Has anyone else found a way to balance fluids with hypertension? His creatinine level is 3.

Avatar m tn I am a male 70 years of age. I have been on 150mg Irbesartan and 5mg Amlodipine daily since October 2010. This controlled by BP within acceptable limits. Since late April, however, the systolic has risen to an average of around 150. My doctor wants me to add a beta blocker to the other medications. Since last October my heart rate was averaging below 60. Since late April it is averaging around 70.

Im only 24 and thats what worries me. I have a family history of High Blood Pressue big time. My Grandad and Dad both had it. My Dads was so high, at the time they couldnt even maintain it. Avatar n tn He tends to normally sleep alot, and is slow on his feet due to the arthritis. His only meds are fortekor 2.5 mg once a day for his renal failure, amlodipine 1.75 mg a day for his blood pressure, and Ipakitine powder on his food (approx 0.5 g). Thanks very much for your help and advice.
Avatar f tn Did you have a kidney function test or test for blood sugar levels? How long are you taking the Amlodipine?? Did you have 24 ABPM test to get a full day BP average?
Avatar m tn of course (meaning that kidneys cannot repair themselves, like some organs can -like the liver) -so usually, by the time kidney failure is diagnosed, 75% of kidney function is lost. So all there is to work on is the remaining 25%. It's a question of getting that 25% to stay that way for as long as possible. It can be "managed" like that, but full function can never be restored. Now most dogs won't show many symptoms at all until the nausea starts, and they go off their food.
Avatar m tn Oh you poor thing! I do know how this feels. My husband died in January of 1999, and my dog only months later. It was very very hard indeed. Kidney Failure in such a young dog could have been caused by ingestion of some kind of toxin?..... acute illness or infection of some kind?....could be an inherited weakness?
Avatar f tn I hope you find it helpful somehow, and blessings for you and your dog - Blu Stage 3 kidney disease is one of the final stages of canine kidney disease, in which your dog will begin showing symptoms of kidney failure. Canine kidney disease occurs when, for whatever reason, your dog's kidneys are not doing their job of removing toxins from the blood efficiently. Often, by the time kidney disease reaches stage 3, kidney damage cannot be reversed.
Avatar m tn Hi. This sounds more like acute renal poisoning to me, but even if it is standard kidney failure there's still lots that can be done. Please join our User Group (Misfits4Me explains how above). Where do you live (country and region of the country)? What are you feeding your dog (please give specifics and full details)?
Avatar f tn You can also cluck on Groups to the right side of the page then click on Chronic Kidney failure in dogs. You may find more useful information as so many have and do deal with these issues. Is she gating sny meds for nausea? Have you tried the chicken (no skin) and rice with maybe some carrot or zucchini added? Have you tried one of the dry or canned diets for kudney probkems? You might try some canned green tripe. Some pet stores sell that now.

Avatar m tn Hi, I have kidney failure do to diabetes. What kinds of foods or supplements will help or hurt my kidneys? I've heard that co q10 is benefical. Any help would be beneficial!
Avatar f tn Its cute, looks like he is winding up getting ready for take off! I think that dealing with this kidney failure stuff is just so overwhelming. Your mind is spinning all the time, worrying constantly. Like I said, I know it didn't come on over night, but once it got bad, the symptoms came on hard and fast. I was getting up everyday scared at what the deal would hold. Checking on my dear dog wondering how much worse he was. Waking up everyday and seeing him deteriorate.
Avatar m tn Renal anomalies could be responsible for decreased or deranged renal function and may lead to renal failure. One working kidney is enough for normal functions of the body. It would be difficult to comment if your other symptoms could be related. I would suggest discussing the situation and the suggested management plan in detail with your treating nephrologist. Hope this is helpful. Take care!
Avatar f tn My 6 year 10 month Russian Blue male cat was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with kidney failure. His only symptons were a bout of vomiting and lethargy. His blood work was quite elevated, BUN 83mg/dl, CREA 5.1mg/dl, PHOS 8.8mg/dl. He has been given fluids twice and we have been giving him Azodyl capsules twice a day. Also sprinkling Epikatin on his food twice a day. We have been trying to transition him to renal diet with not a lot of success.
3117443 tn?1341948135 I just had to let my old friend of 14 years go because of kidney failure. He was a typical Jack Russel Terrier and anyone who met him would not believe he was as old as he was. He still acted like the puppy I brought home so many years before. That was until the disease started taking over. I noticed he had not been eating and was quickly losing weight. Blood work was done and the diagnosis made.
