Common Questions and Answers about Amlodipine for heart failure

Avatar m tn Beta blockers is a proven medication that improves survival in those who have suffered a heart attack, have coronary artery disesase, or heart failure. If there are indications for this, then it is usually a good idea to be on one. There is no absolute value of heart rate that is too low but the general rule that is accepted is you are symptomatic, then the dose should be decreased. Increasing the amlodipine to 10 mg is not a bad idea as you still have room to go up on it.
Avatar m tn In terms of the diagnosis, the cardiologist has referred only to hypertension but having read and aligned the symptoms of the enlarged heart and impaired function, is it not heart failure.....? Also, what is the prognosis for an enlarged heart caused by hypertension, especially in someone of 40 years of age.....can the enlarged heart and function return to normal over time with the medication? Thanks for any insight.
Avatar f tn Prolonged standing Long airplane flights or automobile rides Menstrual periods (for some women) Pregnancy -- excessive swelling may be a sign of preeclampsia, a serious condition sometimes called toxemia, which includes high blood pressure and swelling Being overweight Increased age Injury or trauma to your ankle or foot Swollen legs may be a sign of heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. In these conditions, there is too much fluid in the body.
Avatar f tn Sexual activity is not recommended in patients with heart failure, unstable angina, recent heart attacks, abnormal heart rates and changes in blood pressure levels. Sildenafil exerts systemic vasodilating action causing a lowering of blood pressure. This effect is not clinically significant and does not cause any complaints in most of the patients.

11419535 tn?1418065092 Yes, hypertension is very very common with kidney failure. In fact, I have been gathering research info on it for a month or two, trying to put something together for the Chronic Kidney Failure in Dogs User Group. There is evidence to suggest about 85% or more of CKF dogs have hypertension. It is a very difficult balancing act between the need for fluids and the need to guard against adding stress to the heart.
Avatar m tn I have recently been prescribed Amlodipine-Benaz 5/10 MG capsules for treatment of hypertension. However, my resting pulse rate has consistently been in the 90's and increasing into the 100's at time, so I have been prescribed Carvedilol to help control the heart rate. My question is, doesn't Carvedilol control hypertension as well...Why should I be taking carvedilol in addition to amliodipine?
Avatar m tn I’ve been taking 10 mg of amlodipine now for two weeks, after taking 5 mg for the month prior to that. Have not experienced headaches from either dosage.
Avatar n tn I am on 100 mg of Metoprolol (and 5 mg of Amlodipine) for high blood pressure. My pulse gets down to 44-48 but I do not feel faint. Should my Amlodipine be increased and my Metoprolol reduced since beta blockers reduce pulse rate?
Avatar m tn Your current meds are Lipitor for cholesterol control, Coversyl (Often problematic with a rough sounding cough as a side effect) Minax which is a beta blocker Asprin and Eliquis most likely for anti clotting purposes. Amlodipine for BP or your heart condition. The above are a fairly standard level of treatment for Heart conditions. Its no joke and these are serious medications. So be careful, you need to fully brief your cardiologist first, on this to be sure its ok.
Avatar m tn My cardiologist subbed 5 mg Nebivolol for the Amlodipine due to what he described as exercise-related hypertension. I took this medication for a week and experienced a range of unpleasant side effects, including exhaustion, significant depression and reduced heart rate (mid-60s, compared with my normal mid-80s). I've been off the Nebivolol for five days, but I'm still experiencing these side effects. My heart rate has only come back to about 67-68.
Avatar n tn my sister had open heart surgery.they had to replace one of the main values.butsince she has had the operation her legs swell up.what causes that.
Avatar m tn 5 year old yellow lab that was recently limping, so she was taken to the vet and they did blood work and the blood work suggested Kidney Failure. Her creatine level was 4.1 and BUN/UREA 64 mg/dl. She spent 2 days in the ER getting fluids and medication. She's on amlodipine Besylate, Maropitant, prednisolone, doxycycline. She has struggled to eat, been very tired and isn't herself at all. Its been 4 days since she came home from the ER and she's slowly gotten worse.
Avatar f tn I also suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and take medication for that along with amlodipine besylate, 5 mg. anymore than that and my ankles swell up. I also take 12.5 mg atenolol and anymore than that and it causes palpitations. I also take Atacand 16 mg. and Clonidine, 0.1 mg. I don't know why my blood pressure can't be controlled either. It is frustrating to go to the doctor hoping to get some good numbers but I never do. As for your BP being 156/66, that is fantastic!
Avatar m tn I am 67 year old man who is hypertensive and diabetic for last 20 years. I also have irregular heart beat for last 14 years. Lately I have pain on my left side near spine and below rib cage. I also now have foamy urine. I am already on HBP medicine like Ramipril, Amlodipine, Cardanon,Glimpride etc etc. Will some one explain to me if I am heading for KIDNEY PROBLEM AND IF SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION.
Avatar m tn myblood pressure just now is 130/56. I can understand your cardio's advice to take a BP med to lower the systolic - but what does this do to the diastolic, push it down further and get heart failure?? This discussion is related to <a href="/posts/Heart-Disease/low-diastolic-pressure/show/920275">low diastolic pressure</a>.
Avatar m tn I want to know if taking amlodipine in conjunction with quinapril for a number of years, for reasons other than heart problems, would basically nullify the value of the NT-ProBNP test and whether there could still be something going on. He said to get more exercise and that he didn't think he would need to see me again. All well and good if all the assumptions are correct.
Avatar m tn Other than the nitro I am on 10mg of Amlodipine (for about a week) and 1,000 mg of L-Arginine (which I read is good for small vessel disease). I have not been told I am have small vessel disease, but am operating under that assumption. My chest pain has gotten worse and I am profoundly short of breath since increasing the Amlodipine from 5mg to 10mg. My Cardiologist is very disinterested in pursuing this. He has not come out and called me a liar, but treats me like I am making things up.
Avatar m tn Like I said, athletic people can have lower heart rates. My daughter is very athletic and hers runs low. Normal for her. But, your blood pressure should be much lower too. Is this what it is when you see the Dr? 160/85.Do you have a problem with anxiety? This can make your BP and HR go up and down.
Avatar n tn I was just prescribed amlodipine for my gastritis how ever I can't seem to find any info about it being helpful for that. All the info I have found is about blood pressure. Is this a common prescription? Should I be concerned if I already have low blood pressure?
15481674 tn?1440853541 I have been on Ativan since 1999 have not gone off it then i am on a small dose of Amlodipine 2.5mg for blood pressure and Losartan for blood pressure 100mg I only took 1/2 a dose this morning i know its prescribed 3mgs three times a day but maybe its way to much maybe i just need to cut it down.
Avatar f tn Gosh, I'm really sorry to hear about your son's blood pressure issues to begin with. He's a young man. We have familial hypertension in my family. I'm prone to it. Mine is directly connected to my weight. I gain weight, my bp goes up. Not great as I'm an emotional eater. So, it's a battle. That is awesome that he is so good about working out and doing cardio (most important for the heart). Was he always or did it increase with the BP concerns?
Avatar m tn Most people have a low HR when sleeping, what happened, did you wake up and measure it for some reason? Or were you on a heart monitor? Sorry if I overlooked. Given you echo result I think it would be a good idea to get an echo every few years, maybe 5 years. The doctor should check to see if there are any changes form the baseline you now have.
