Amitiza versus miralax

Common Questions and Answers about Amitiza versus miralax

amitiza

Avatar n tn This is on top of a strong oral medication (Amitiza) and magnesium. With Miralax, I get the stuff in the bottle and take 1 1/2 capfuls once a day and as needed.
2102085 tn?1350866645 The only thing the x- ray showed was a moderate amount of feces. They told me it was just constipation and suggested Miralax. I took Miralax for five days with no results and went back were they performed a fleet enema on me... I did get relief but the abdominal pain got worse. Again I went to the doctor because the pain was so intense. My entire lower abdomen feels sore and tender with a constant ache on my left side. Sometimes I get shooting pains on my lower left and lower right side.
Avatar n tn I have tried everything from high fiber diet, miralax, enemas, and I have been on Amitiza and Sentakot for three days and to no avail. I researched some on the internet and I am concerned that the gastrointestinal issues are from macrocyctic anemia (b-12 or pernicious anemia) from what I can figure from my symptons and blood work. What is the treatment for such? Whom would I see regarding this? What other methods will relieve the constipation? I am very miserable and feel awlful 24/7.
Avatar n tn I am dieing to know the med as well as nothing seems to work for me.. I have been doing the Fiber thing (which too much makes the gas get trapped in the colon even worse and the pain is god aweful)..
Avatar f tn Long and twisted colon that tends to slow passage of stool and cause constipation that can be quite severe. I take Miralax and Amitiza for mine. They work, but are expensive - especially the latter.
Avatar m tn Also a nerve was cut that has since then caused motor sensory problems yielding a lack of perstalsis. Now must take Miralax daily and does not work 7 days a week. So now do cleansing every Sunay evening befor bed.
Avatar n tn Hello All. I'm really new on the panel and I'm searching for help. In the last two weeks I have not been able to have a BM. My doctor gave me some samples of amitiza 24 mcg. I've been taken them 2 per day for the last 4 days - One at night and another in the A.M. With the 1st tablet I had a BM. I have not had another BM since. It doesn't seem that I'm having any normal digestive sounds or movements. I don't even have the urge to have a BM.
433485 tn?1321813390 I have bowel movement, 2 or 3 every day, but sometimes I will miss a day. When that happens I take miralax. I also take fiber everyday and when I think about it ( bad I know) colace that was prescribed by gi. they sent me home with presciption for miralax and had me drink citrate magnesium that night to clean out. I am now following directions and doing what I was told to do. My question is has this ever happened to any one else? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Often the stools you describe are the best I can hope for, and only the fact I use Miralax and Amitiza allow anything to pass through my long and twisted bowel (which is a problem that is in addition to Celiac disease). So I would say it sounds like you have inflammation still, and if you do not have a particular cause for the inflammation, you are going to need to take meds to continue moving your bowels, and not expect things will be perfect immediately.
Avatar m tn I do not have a large intestine, had surgery 13 years ago. at the place small colon is connected i had a CT scan which says i have a stricture and scarring. I am having terrible bloating and cannot eat any large meal, also can't do fiber, gluten or carbs. Any suggestions. I take amitiza twice a day and drink miralax every night with prune juice. this has ruined my life. it has just gotten worse over the last 6 months.
1704915 tn?1357601254 I also have colonic inertia and a tortuous colon, but I have small intestine, stomach, and rectal problems too so my case is a little different from yours. For the constipation I have tried Miralax, Milk of Magnesia, Magnesium Citrate, Docusate, Doculax, Senokot, Lactulose, Amitiza, and probably some others that I am forgetting. I am tube fed so my diet doesn't really apply.
Avatar f tn I am on milk of magnesia, amitiza, and dulcolax and my doctor wants me to try to get off the milk of magnesia. You can try using other medications for constipation to see if that works better. Amitiza is a new one out there but sometimes certain ones work better than others. Has your doctor ever mentioned abdominal migraines?
Avatar m tn I just was diagnosed with a tortuous colon after months of agony from constipation and a lifetime of general gastrointestinal issues. I'm only 31 and would prefer not to have surgery...I heard it is very risky and last resort only. I've been told to take Colace and Miralax. I'm still having issues, although not nearly as bad as before I started the Colace. Some days or half days I'm fine and then back to the pain again. What are some other remedies people have tried?
946915 tn?1271941032 Thanks and yes...I've had all the tests you mentioned above done. The only ones that showed anything was the CT scan showed a small kidney stone and the gastric emptying scan showed moderate to severe gastroparentsis. I need to work on the multiple smaller meals...I typically try to keep semi-healthy snacks at work and just eat dinner. I do try to eat low-fat...maybe I'm eating fiborous things and don't realize it. We tried amitiza and it did nothing...
Avatar n tn I have done the doxycycline and a few other therepies that my gastrointerologist recommended. They would work for a while and then would get worse agan. I am now taking Amitiza and am doing pretty good with it. Though I have now started noticing a correlation to my menstral cycle and the onset of these symptoms. A week before i start my period I will stop haveing BMs. Completely. I won't go again until I start. And then I usually have to induce it somehow.
1773179 tn?1314201148 They had me on Amitiza 24 MCG capsules and polyethelene gylcol powder. I took the pills and the powder twice a day. I also ate fiber one cereals and bars. I have always ate alot of fruits and vegetables.
Avatar f tn If you have not tried MiraLax, it is very helpful. Metamucil is good for you as it is high in fiber, but alone it was not helpful for me (I have a long and twisted colon). But I am experimenting with using both Miralax and Metamucil, and it is a good combination for me. I also have to take a strong Rx medication - Amitiza - but due to the expense, you will want to avoid that if possible. It costs hundreds of dollars every month, but without it my system shuts down.
Avatar f tn Opiates will bind you up! Ask your Doc for "Linzess" or "Amitiza"....they aren't laxatives but you take them daily so you can go. I'm on opiates 10 yrs. now for a fractured hip and I use those meds. Remember, I'm NOT a doctor; this is just MY experience. Use Miralax, too.
Avatar m tn Then I went another 6 days without a bowel movement, so I saw an internal medicine doctor who prescribed Amitiza for 5 days, Miralax, and Citracel. I have been on these 3 mild laxatives for 5 days. During each of the past 3 days I have expelled 1 golf-ball sized stool daily.
Avatar f tn I have similar problems, but thankfully some things have worked for me. I use Amitiza and Miralax and I take magnesium citrate 500 mg every morning. Magnesium deficiency is a rampant problem, so I strongly suggest you try it. If you take calcium, take about 400 mg at night and do not take them together at the same time. You are also likely deficient in vitamin D. I take 2000 IU at night.
Avatar n tn I'm dealing with the same type issue. I am 33 & my body stopped working in the past 6 months. I am hoping they fig it out with my next tests. I was in ER last week because it had been 17 days since I had a BM - and that hurt. Now, it's been 7 days since my last BM - I am on softeners, fiber, miralax, water, amitiza & NOTHING! I'm beginning to get worried.
1704915 tn?1357601254 I begged her to give me something for some relief now that she knew this was the cause. She took me off of Miralax and put me on a high dose of Amitiza. This time I didnt stop taking it because it didnt do anything but because it made me VERY sick. I missed more work because the side effects made me feel as though I had the flu (aches, pains, chills, hot flashes, headaches). I took it as instructed with a meal to not get nauseated which does help...
Avatar f tn I have been on Miralax long-term thru my GI and it is a wonderful, non-addicting gentle way to use a laxative long term and in my opinion is better than Senna and much more comfortable to use. But make sure your Dr. rules out any reason why you need to use this med on a daily basis before you commit to using it. All my tests were negative so I got a thumb's up! And in the US now Miralax is otc~!
Avatar f tn t help some people. I was started on Amitiza but not good results fir me. Was switched to Linzess which works better but you might have to play around with the dose, etc. do you try using Miralax daily? Ducolax suppositories? I hope you can fine a soecialist to evaluate your situation.
849059 tn?1238769211 I have cerebellar atrophy-shrinkage of the cerebellum-due to radiation treatment when I was an infant for non-cancerous tumors on my face. The radiation damaged my cerebellum so as I age, more and more organs in my body do not function properly. Almost every organ spasms as do my skeletal muscles. Most problems are neuro-genic. I seem to be one of a kind so answers are in short supply. I'm searching for some direction because the doctors are giving up.
