938718 tn?1323783514 Treatment and chemoprophylaxis The currently circulating swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is sensitive to the neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral medications zanamivir and oseltamivir, but is resistant to the adamantane antiviral medications, amantadine and rimantadine. Pregnant women who meet current case-definitions for confirmed, probable or suspected swine influenza A (H1N1) infection should receive empiric antiviral treatment.

Oseltamivir and zanamivir treatment and chemoprophylaxis regimens recommended for pregnant women are the same as those recommended for adults who have seasonal influenza. Recommendations for use of antivirals for pregnant women might change as additional data on the benefits and risks of antiviral therapy in pregnant women become available.
Avatar n tn Hi, Tamiflu must be used in combination of amantadine or rimantadine in severe Swine flu cases. The duration is minimum 5 days. Please consult another doctor if you don’t get to see your doctor for 2 days. It is an emergency. Please do not wait for the complications to develop. Seek medical attention immediately. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
372366 tn?1284403873 Copyman, I think we have a rhyme for teleprivir now). Ribavirin is not one of those listed. But being a suspicicious person, I have a theory of why riba is not a suggest 'stockpiled' anti-viral. If governments and business were to create significant stockpiles of ribavirin they could be accused of accumulating weapons of mass destruction. And we all know what that could cause.
Avatar f tn s probably more effective than drugs still used in the US such as amantadine and rimantadine which have gone from being aprox. 90% effective to being about 10% effective due to vral adaptation. SOC for treating flu is now a different class of drugs, oseltamivir (Tamiflu).
Avatar f tn I suffered 27 years following a tbi. With normal MRI and CT and no seizure I was told my symptoms were CONVERSION DISORDER. I KNEW this was not psychological in any way. BUT the more I tried to get help ;the more the doctors were convinced I as malingering, faking, delusional or worst. IT HAS BEEN the most difficult life barely able to take care of myself and only suicide made sense.
Avatar n tn Anyway, after one visit and several emails from me to the doctor he siad it did not appear to be catatonia and he could not help my father. So he is just existing and he has always taken amantadine because it did help with his weakness and movement. It is causing alot of discoloration to his skin so he had tried numerous times to come off of it because this cannot be good for his body. But everytime he has to continue to take it because of the movement and weakness.

5509293 tn?1428531475 This problem occurs more often in females and usually occurs on the legs and/or feet after amantadine has been taken regularly for a month or more. 620048 tn?1358018235 It seems to help with fatigue to some extent. I do alot of bike riding and such and that kicks my endurance and energy up for a bit. During my last exacerbation I was so tired it was sick. I started taking the amantadine twice per day and it seems to be helping. I guess I thought I was going to get this huge just taking a infusion boost. Nothing like that but its nice. The first couple of days you may feel like you are on speed. Enjoy it! You get to feel normal for a change..
751951 tn?1406632863 I was on amantadine and was happy with the effects. It didn't give me enormous amounts of energy or the Energizer Bunny effect that people sometimes seem to get from Provigil. However, I was much more clear-headed, even through the evening, and I did have more energy. For me the initial effect was somewhat subtle. I realized to my surprise one day that it was 7 pm and I was still focused and productive. Unfortunately, the side effects were killing me and I had to go off it.
1627868 tn?1333886342 I am from over at the limbo-land forum but have posted here occasionally. Anyhoo, I saw my MS specialist for the first time today and left there with a script for amantadine (sp?). Thoughts? Anyone else take it, does it help, what do you take it for? He told me he was prescribing it for fatigue, which was never even discussed (which makes think either a. I look like complete s*%$, or b. it's also for fatigue of my muscles, which he could see during his exam).
11062655 tn?1414987783 Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone had used Tamiflu with liver disease? The side effects sound pretty harsh on the liver. My doctor gave me 75 mgs. to be taken twice a day for 5 days. I have stage 2 and 3 scarring. I don't want to speed up the damage by taking a liver killing drug. Thank you.
335728 tn?1331414412 It is usually well tolerated, but side effects of amantadine include insomnia, mood disturbances, allergic reactions, confusion, and hallucinations. So that is it in a nutshell I guess...I am taking it for fatigue and so far it hasn't changed anything but it's only been 2 days so I guess I have to give it a chance! Thank you for the well wishes and I hope this is helpful!
Avatar f tn Testing showed I now have a verbal learning deficit, but my MRI is normal. A neurologist decided to treat it as TBI and prescribed the Amantadine. He said it might improve my memory, but what actually happened was a huge change in perception and the disappearance of the fatigue. I felt a "wave" go through my head the first dose follwed by a odd perceptual change. By the second dose I suddenly felt everything around me was "real" again.
405614 tn?1329144114 Kathy, Congrats on the Amantadine! It is so nice when a medicine actually helps instead of hurts. Just out of curiosity what dose are you on? As I said in my Ritalin post I tried the Amantadine and it didn't work. It seemed like it was for about 2 days and then nothing. I'm wondering if they should have just upped my dose. I want to try Provigal but like you it is too expensive and we can't get my insurance to pay for it :( Enjoy your yoga and your new found energy!

3205586 tn?1362842985 I took amantadine for about 3 days and I couldn't tolerate the weird spacey feeling it gave me. I felt Iike a bobble head doll I now take provigil and it has been very good for me. I am sensitive to medications, and I found the full dose of two pills a day raised my heart rate too much and I felt like I couldn't get into a deep sleep. I cut back to 1/2 a pill in the morning and that works well for me.
5509293 tn?1428531475 Thanks guys. Called it in. Sounds like a flare they said, getting amantadine. Not sure how I feel about that. I haven't got official dx and haven't 'done' drugs yet.
