I take Toprol XL 200 mgs. and Altace 20mgs. and have for many years however recently I have experienced an increase in blood pressure. I have lost some weight and continue to diet as well as exercise. My doctor has tried two calcium channel blockers with the results that I become very ill and unable to continue these medications. Any suggestions?
Why is my systolic blood pressure still high when I am taking Altace. My diastolic blood pressure is normal when I take Altace. Why the difference. Could I have angina since I have had pain in my chest around the heart area and in the middle of the chest. Also, could I have arterialschlorsis from the high systolic blood pressure?

Never had a heart attack. The Cardio put me on Metoprolol ( 50mg); Altace 2.5 mg and baby aspirin in addition to Lipitor 20mg. Sep. 2009 he took me off the Metoprolol and increased the Altace to 10 mg.
My Blood potassium level at the time was perfectly normal at 3.6; after the spike in the ace-inhibitor my potassium level has risen in two months to 5.6, which I believe is an unsafe level. My family doctor has now asked me to go back to the 2.5 mg dosage and get re-tested after two weeks.

I take toprol 100mg. I want to have a drink of wine with my dinner or sometimes lunch. Am I asking for trouble??
I have been on Toprol for 3 years and have put on twenty pounds use to be a runner but I cannot find enogh energy to start back I have tried and tried, I have been through a couple of stress tests with very good results doctor thinks could just be in my "electrical " system he is reluctant to take me off Beta Blockers but I want my old life back, can I ween off Toprol to see what happens? Only other medical history is Chrone's and I have been in remisssion for six years.
Hi - 49yo male in otherwise good health, had an mi and placement of 3 stents in RCA. Was told that there was no damage to my heart, and have returned to all activity including hi-intensity workouts (which I was doing pre-mi). I've put on about 30 "pity-pounds" (from 185 to 215) and despite increase in exercise and near-saintly eating habits, having a hard time losing. I suspect that Toprol is causing this problem.
s disease. I was put on Toprol 25 mg daily to hekp with my heart while I went on an anti-thyroid called PTU.
Several months ago, palpitations began appearing again. I got tests done it appeared my thyroid was not overproducing anymore. Once I reduced my antithyroid to compensate, the palpitations went away.
A few weeks ago, following the numbers from blood test results, I went off PTU completely. Blood work showed my thyroid levels were normal and I didn't need PTU anymore.
I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.

a long while ago (years) bbc news reported the u.k medical asso , had found beta blockers caused cholesterol to build up in most people who took it. so they limited the use of beta blockers - they also reported that due to adverse side effects , beta blockers would be in limited useage in the u.k.
Hi, Everyone. My EP switched me from Sotalol (160 mg daily) to Toprol XL (25 mg daily). His instructions were to stop taking Sotalol (no weaning) and start taking Toprol. It was a HUGE leap of faith for me as I have tried to not obsess about this. Today was my first day. I'm doing fine, but want to know if anyone else has made the same switch and faired well. Thanks!
AFter my 84 yr old Mother had an MI and CHF. The MD now has her on Toprol and Imdur with a parameter of not to give if 100/60 This is too low. I find it should be more like 120/60. Even then I have been holding them and by nighttime the BP can be as high as 180/60-90. We are going for an apt. But in the meantime have talked to my friend a pharmacist. She suggested giving the toprol and not the imdur which I did. (She also gets Aldactone 25 and lasix 20 which I have given 30 min apart.

Thank you for the info. I am really pleased with my outcome. Now hopefully if everything looks good on the monitors (I'm wearing one now to make sure it is ok to be off the sotalol and then I will be on one in February) he will take me off the toprol and then if I stay in NSR for six months after the toprol he will start to "wean" me off the coumadin. So right now I am still looking at another year of coumadin. But, I now can see the "light" at the end of the tunnel.

Three days later, my primary doctor prescribed Toprol. Three years later, I am still taking Toprol. My blood pressure is normal (sometimes high in the evening / but rarely). I would like to stop taking Toprol. Has anyone stopped taking Toprol before? Is there any risks of stopping? How do I tell my doctor that I want to stop taking this medication? It does not make me feel well. I feel sleepy by 7pm, lethargic throughout the day and depressed at times. Thank you.
I had an episode of svt in June. Given adenosine to stop it. Then prescribed Toprol XL to keep heart rate low. It seems that I have pacs every day. Yesterday it was constant for about 9 hours. About one per minute. My chest feels like it is quaking, makes me fearfull, nauseous, generally weak. Saw cardiologist yesterday, we both wonder if Toprol is making situation worse. It's never been this constant before. I have another appointment in a month.
You can get off the Toprol - its not easy - weening slow works the best
your side effects are pretty normal of toprol - I took toprol xl for about 6.5 years - long term useage ! I hated it - have to say it was the worst beta blocker iv taken in my life ! and I would never take it or anything like it again ! if you get help from Doctor in weening off it , expect to be put on another drug after your off the toprol - for h.b.p. ccb or ?
I started on Toprol in December and they got more frequent. The dosage was raised in February. They became a little less intense throughout the month and finally almost completely disappeared a few weeks ago. I knew better to celebrate and I was right. THEY'RE BACK!!! Ugh is all I can say.
I had stopped the caffeine, hydrated myself and began eating bananas for the potassium.
As for Toprol, I take that among other drugs, and believe Toprol is at the root of my laziness - my wife thinks it come natural - but I think I had more energy when I wasn't taking Toprol, which started following heart surgery when I ended up with some Atrial Flutter...which converted to the long standing AFig.
