Allergies vs strep throat

Common Questions and Answers about Allergies vs strep throat

allergies

Avatar n tn I know strep and allergies are definitely two different things, but it could be that if he has an allergy issue, his nasal passages and throat get irritated from that and then an infection occurs - the strep throat. This past winter I, myself, got strep throat twice and pneumonia once - the first bout of strep actually landed me in the hospital for 4 days.
Avatar n tn You should definately see a doctor. It can be hard to tell what is causing a sore throat. If you have allergies, alot of times the post nasal drip/sinus drainage can cause a chronic sore throat. It can also give you that lump in the throat feeling too. That happens to me during allergy season sometimes. On the other hand, you could have a bacterial infection like tonsillitis or Strep. You can actually look at yourself in the mirror and say "ahhhh" and see your tonsils.
Avatar n tn The symptoms described could be due to a throat infection, most probably streptococcal or a viral infection. Strep sore throat needs to be treated with an antibiotic as strep is a bacteria. Viral sore throat is best treated with rest, warm oral fluids and (OTC) tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen for pain.
Avatar f tn I had strep throat about 4 weeks ago. After taking antibiotics, I was okay. Immediately after I came down with a cold of some sort, My throat was constantly dry, and now I always have this sticky phlegm at the back of my throat? What could this be? Post nasal drip?
Avatar f tn Back in May I got strep throat. I ended up getting it a total of 4 times over a 10week period. I don't know if I had become immune to all amoxicillon or not, but it finally went away mid-July. Then 1.5weeks later I had a flare up of what I thought was strep(fever, red throat, puss & canker sores). My doctor sent me to an ENT who left it up to me if I want to have my tonsils removed or just monitor it through the winter months. My tonsils are still swollen, but no sore throat.

Avatar f tn It could be allergies. While my throat never closed up, swelling in the throat is sometimes a symptom of an allergic reaction. Mine was nuts, but it could be seafood or something. I'd take it to a doctor, especially because you couldn't breathe - that's a major problem of something being wrong. If s/he thinks it's an allergy, then s/he should refer you to an allergist for testing. If it is an allergy, then you need an Epi pen or meds.
Avatar f tn You would have to get a throat culture to be sure if it is or isn't. It could be strep, tonsilitis, or irritation from post nasal drip (allergies). We can't tell you if it is or isn't. You have to see a doctor for that. Your sore throat could be purely coincidental.
Avatar f tn My 9yr old has had a sore throat for about two weeks. Her throat is red but no visible white bumps or pus. Her voice is hoarse but she has no other symptoms.
Avatar m tn I went to the doctor and she said it was allergies and the drainage down the back of my throat. I have never had a sore throat last this long. Could it be gonorrhea of the throat or acute hiv symptoms? I have had some fatigue, but it seems to come from anxiety over this. She checked my lymph nodes and said they were fine. Any help would be appreciated. The strep test was negative. Could it be mono? Could it be tonsillitis? This morning, May 24, I had diarrhea and my appetite is not as good.
1672333 tn?1416694918 t cause the swollen tongue, swollen lymph nodes but could cause the slight ear and throat problems. But Strep throat can cause serious problems so since you had it a couple of times in addition to the swollen lymph nodes I would see the ENT. Usually, a swollen tougue is associated with allergy but your strep throat is persistant. It may have been due to so many antibiotics or a reaction to one of them.
Avatar n tn Z-pack for Strep Throat? Hmmmm. I think he/she should have probably went in the direction of a broad-spectrum antibiotic, i.e. Amoxicillin vs. Zithromax. I have seen Zithromax ordered for Strep Throat, but not that often.
Avatar f tn If you had strep throat or another type of strep you wouldn't have sneezing and runny nose. Some viruses start with a sore throat then change into the other symptoms. Hopefully they will go away soon. If not or if they get worse see your doctor.
Avatar n tn Also, all through this the congestion has never completely gone away (for over 2 months now) which has always been common with my allergies. Sore throat has also been common with my allergies in the past. I gargled some diluted hydrogen peroxide in hopes that that will help. I'm just wondering if these sound like allergy symptoms or if this is something else. I hardly EVER get sick, other than my allergies. It's been years since I've even gotten a cold.

Avatar n tn I have had it for 2 weeks now, I got strep throat but I had the rash before I got the sore throat. The doctor says its viral rash could last 4-6 weeks just curious if anyone has had this too??
Avatar f tn A simple virus can cause these same spots. I would not assume strep. Strep usually has other symptoms like fever. Wait a day and you can get swabbed at a doctor's office if you don't mind paying a copay possibly for nothing. But viruses run their course on their own typically and you most likely have a virus. Tea, ibuprofen will help with this.
Avatar f tn I rarely get allergies and when I do it will only last for like 4 days max....with being pregnant I had allergies with a sore throat for a whole week (checked for strep which came back negative) and now im in my second week with it with just extra mucus but no sore throat.
Avatar f tn I started to get my voice back and then I got a severe sore throat and it hurt to swallow and felt like my throat was swollen and it also felt like I had blisters on the back of my throat. My doctor told me to take regular mucinex to help with the pnd and to call back if it didn't get any better. After that was when my throat started hurting really bad. I've had a sore throat for almost 3 weeks now, and the severity fluxuates. And now my nose is very clogged and feels swollen.
Avatar f tn The raspy voice and sore throat could be signs of strep throat, bronchitis or pneumonia which are very common around this time. Personally, I would go to the doctor as ask for a strep test and if that's negative, make sure they know the severity of your symptoms. Don't down play it, because from personal experience, breathing issues should be addressed as soon as possible and can become serious. I hope this helped, and I wish you luck!
Avatar f tn 12 days later I see my throat is inflamed. Doc said negative for strep. Waiting on my herpes simplex throat culture to come back. Sometimes I get a headache. But no fever. Could this be throat herpes or hiv ? I’m really worried. I keep drinking liquids and taking cough drops to help but the inflammation is still there and throat dryness. It’s not really sore. And it doesn’t hurt. Since I’m negative for strep is it possible this is hiv or hsv 1 in my throat ?
Avatar f tn My doctor was hoping the allergist would help guide us for future treatments. I am fearful for any infection like strep throat, ear or skin infections, we have run out of options.

Avatar n tn I have had an extremely sore throat for 5 days. I went to the Dr yesterday and tested negative for mono and strep--however my monocites were elevated from my last blood test (done only 2 weeks before). My throat is red, with lines on it, and the right side seems more swollen than the left, however, over the last 24 hours it seems to have evened out, same pain on both sides, and it's excrutiating when I yawn or sneeze---I am not sneezing a lot...my nose is clear, no drainage.
4430758 tn?1354482428 The usual cause of swollen tonsils with “specks of pus” is bacterial infection, the most common being a Strep Throat. However, oral sex can result in throat infection with gonorrhea. The bottom line is that you should have a reexamination and a complete throat culture, complete in the sense that it is not a culture designed to reveal the presence or absence of Strep.
Avatar f tn t have all the other symptoms except pain fever and pus and possible rash (in scarlet fever) with strep throat (not the cough, sneezing and other cold or flu like symptoms, but since your throat is so painful I thought of writing again to maybe have you check.
