Common Questions and Answers about Aldara imiquimod side effects

aldara

Avatar m tn Hello, I'm a male, 26yrs old. Can anyone describe their experiences with Imiquimod? I am on the 3.75% cream which my doctor has told me to use every other day for a month. In the first 2 weeks, nothing happened, only just a couple days ago I noticed a very slight indication that the medication might be working, but I'm still not sure. I have about 20-30 very small warts, and notice 2 or 3 of them showing a bit of redness and drying up a bit.
Avatar m tn Although it remains to be tested, it is possible that imiquimod-independent effects also contribute to the therapeutic efficacy of Aldara.

Avatar n tn After only about 2 weeks of usage almost all symptoms of the warts were gone however I now have perianal psoriasis in its place. That is one of the side-effects of imiquimod and it mainly strikes people whom are genetically prone to having psoriasis. It is known that an overactive immune system can trigger a site of psoriasis, and imiquimod invokes an immune response to have cytotoxins destroy skin cells. So now....
Avatar n tn I am experiencing similar side effects as a result of the Imiquimod treatments. I went to the doc complaining of two small warts, since starting the cream, I have several red spots around the base of my penis. I don't know if I am applying it carelessly (it's hard to get it only on the warts) or maybe too often. As far as the duration, the instruction from my Dr and the packaging says to use no longer than 16 weeks. So i would give until then for some changes to happen.
1306047 tn?1333243591 I remember you from the past on this forum. Aldara can have side effects that you mention and was never something I was going to use. I agree with freezing or burning them off. The sooner they are gone, the better.
Avatar f tn I was concerned I contracted genital herpes about a year ago. I developed one pimple like sore that I picked at until it became an open ulcer, but it went away. I also had red itchy swollen labia, an initial vaginal discharge, anal itching, occaisonal stabbing pain in the back of my legs. My Gyno first said I had dermatitis. However, I had been using DMSO cream which significantly reduced the symptoms by the time I saw her.
Avatar m tn The doctor prescribed me Aldara which is a cream to treat genital warts. I was told to apply it 3 times a week, and Ive been doing it so, until a week ago when I researched all about Aldara and it says to do it twice a week. I am currently in week 8. So The warts are gone.. they were gone on week 4, but now the issue is this. As part of the down part of using Aldara is that it makes your skin go red where you apply it. But what happened now is that it burned off a piece of my skin.
Avatar f tn Welcome to the STD forum. Sorry to hear your difficulties and uncertainties about your genital warts. Try not to let it get you down; this won't go on indefinitely and all will be well. And congratulations on starting Gardasil. Warts are not especially common in the vagina, except on the cervix. If visible warts haven't appeared in those locations by now, most likely they will not. Any additional warts that you develop will not be from re-catching the virus from your partner.
Avatar n tn Ive been using imiquimod for almost the full term. The area affected is between my scrotum and inner thigh crease. In the matter of a night i got redness and sores. Ive stopped using it and wash daily. It doesnt help that its right where my jeans and underwear ride. Any help in relief?
Avatar n tn I have talked to several docs some use cryo but I have not found any that use laser. None even brought up imiquimod which I learned about online and feel that it might be best in my situation. It seems they prescribe whatever they are familiar with. Also a transmission question. Would my partner get the condyloma exactly where my affected skin touched theres? or could it pop up anywhere on them once they have contracted it? Also does my sperm carry the hpv virus?
Avatar m tn I applied aldara (imiquimod) to the shaft of the penis in an attempt to get rid of what I presumed were penile warts. About a week after use, I developed well localised red and swollen skin on the head of the penis which then ulcertated and has been slow to heal. I have not been herpes positive before and dont think I have had recent contact with any herpes positive partners.
Avatar m tn I've been using Aldara for over two weeks now and am experiencing absolutely no side effects at all. Now I'm not disappointed believe me, but the one and only nice thing about side effects is that they indicate that whatever you are using is not "working" per-se but that it's doing *something*. Is this normal? Also, my doctor did a pretty deep freeze of the warts before sending me home with Aldara.
Avatar n tn The doctor said that if it was Aldara side effects then it would have happened on the wart itself too. But the area effected was the pink skin near the head of the penis whereas the wart is on the darker skin on the shaft. So I am thinking maybe the part on the head was more sensitive. Is it possible this is a Aldara side effect. Last time I was sexually active was 2 months ago just about the time I started Aldara. I was with her for 4 months.
Avatar f tn s because trich is a lot less common than BV. In regard to the irritation, imiquimod (Aldara) often does that wherever it is applied, as you already know, so that seems a good bet. From your description, herpes doesn't seem at all likely, but if your provider agrees the lesions look consistent with that diagnosis, appropriate testing can be done. If not, you shouldn't demand a blood test on your own; rely on your provider's judgment.
Avatar n tn Hi Doctor. I wanted to update you on my condition, as it has finally been diagnosed after biopsy of one of the lesions. The lesions turned out to be bowenoid papulosis with presence of HPV-16. My dermatologist has prescribed Aldara for topical treatment. I will not bother you with questions about this condition because I've read a lot of literature about BP and HPV-16, including your own posts on the subject. I understand the condition, the risks, and the overall prognosis.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the forum. Your dermatologist has much more experience using imiquimod (Aldara) than I do. We don't use it as the main warts treatment in our STD clinic and I have personally treated very few patients with it. Please confirm my replies with your dermatologist. 1) The research studies with imiquimod applied it only to overt, visible warts.
Avatar m tn yes imiquimod as therapy is out of question for now and results have been very limited, i guess the problem is that imiquimod should be continued daily as 12.5mg suppository or higher but sides are absolutely not tollerable (fatigue, blured vision, creatinine increase, heavy general inflmmation, hair loss and change from straight to curly), at least for me, and this cannot be done.
Avatar f tn t have to and I just want to know if anyone else has had these side effects from Aldara where they were told they may have herpes. I have never had any other STd's in my life. I get tested often and so does my boyfriend and he's never had anything either. I just need some type of reassurance because i have to wait a whole week to find out if I have herpes.
Avatar n tn s a wart. It it is, imiquimod (Aldara) is not guaranteed effective. It cures about 60-70% of genital warts. So my guess is your genital bump is not a wart, and may not be abnormal. Almost everybody has irregularities of the skin, whether genital or anywhere else. I agree with your plan to see a dermatologist, but I will not advise you to ask for a biopsy or anything else. Just describe what has gone on, then let her or him evaluate it and decide what to advise.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with HPV in mid to late August at the local STI clinic. They used cryotherapy to try and get rid of them but the warts just multiplied and got bigger. So i had to quite large clusters on either side. They gave me Aldara mid to late September. I wasn't following the routine properly as I was very busy with work and college but after about two weeks of proper use (putting it on every second night) they really started to decrease in size and number.
