12268405 tn?1427853361 On April 2nd I made the decision to admit myself to a psychiatric hospital due to a psychotic episode. The thing that I'm having the hardest time comprehending is if I induced the episode or not. I convinced myself that I was covered in fleas, I heard voices saying my name and calling me worthless in the past, & I experienced paranoia. I don't know what to think right now. I wish I could know if I made the symptoms worse or not...
Avatar f tn Yes, some people with bipolar disorder have hallucinations and hear voices. Voices aren't really fully schizophrenia. https://www.healthline.com/health/bipolar-disorder/bipolar-hallucinations Schizophrenia follows a pattern different than bipolar. Are you trying to decide which is going on for your son or does he already have a bipolar diagnosis?
Avatar n tn Some of what you are describing could be neurological so have some tests done to rule that out first. As for psychosis existing in bipolar it can especially in bipolar with psychotic features and schizoaffective as I have made a full recovery from (read through my posts). Zyprexa causes sedation and a fair amount of weight gain from what I've found and is somewhat hard to tolerate. You could ask your psychiatrist about other options as regards antipsychotics.
Avatar f tn It could also take some time to find the medication which is right for her because not every medication works the same and as effectively for every single person but chances are that one of them will work for her eventually. It could be bipolar disorder with psychotic features like ILADVOCATE said or some psychotic disorder since 120 conditions can have psychosis as a symptom.
1564087 tn?1308947518 d have to find out the specifics of your diagnosis as hallucinations can occur in bipolar with psychotic features (and schizoaffective disorder such as I have) and there are many subtypes of bipolar and hallucinations and psychosis can occur in some. If you have concerns about the side effects of Seroquel it would be essential to speak to your psychiatrist and discuss what other medication might not be unsafe to take as regards heart disease.
202665 tn?1248806733 I think it's more the other symptoms involved that determine if it's one or the other, so no, I don't think it's possible. It doesn't seem like schizophrenia has the highs and lows of bipolar disorder, and I've seen someone with schizophrenia, and compared to me when I have my hallucinations (bipolar type 1), it's a complete difference in level of function. Now, is it possible to have bipolar disorder and develop/have schizophrenia?
Avatar f tn The type of hallucinations you are experiencing is known as Complex or formed hallucinations as you see things with details like people around you. In such cases it is very important to note any other conditions like eye problems, stress, confusion, memory loss, alcohol, drug, and medication history is also important.
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
Avatar n tn Depression with psychotic features is when a person has psychotic thoughts only during mood fluctuations. With schizoaffective disorder psychotic thoughts or auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) can occur at any time. But as to how to look at it I'd say look at it as I do, I am a person with a psychiatric disability and I need treatment as part of my recovery. See it as a positive step up in life and keep going from there.
Avatar f tn Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder or a depressive disorder with psychotic features, or another psychotic disorder and is not attributable to the physiological effects of another medical condition.
Avatar m tn re evidently struggling with a lot of psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations), dissociative symptoms (depersonalization and derealization) and anxiety issues on top of your mood problems. You are also reporting some things characteristic of hypomania/mania which, if it IS hypomania/mania would definitively rule out depression. I think you definitely need to see a psychiatrist.
Avatar f tn I used to have audio hallucinations a long time ago before I was stabilized but all of a sudden I am starting to hear voices. I am not schizophrenic or psychotic (yet). I have Bipolar Disorder and have been going thru a lot of stress lately. My theraist siad it was just a symptom at this point and it is probably caused by stress. She told me to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse to tell my mental health care provider... I have an appointment with her on Sept 7th.
Avatar f tn Is it possible for hallucinations/psychotic experiences to be like a horror film playing in your mind that you can't control? For example, yesterday, I had this mental "movie" of the grim reaper standing behind me with a wire, about to strangle me or slit my throat. Deep down I knew it wasn't real but it felt real, like a dream while I was awake, as if I could somehow sense that he was behind me ready to do something. I was totally afraid of what was going to happen.
1351968 tn?1278205300 While some people with bipolar disorder will experience a disconect from reality (hallucinations, delusions, paranoia) it's different from schizophrenia. Schizophrenics will often have the same disconects, but there is more to the disorder (word salad, catatonia, social isolation, social dysfunction, and impairments in the way the person thinks and speaks).
Avatar n tn Seroquel (Quetipine) is a newer atypical anti-psychotic. It is mainly used for that reason-ppl with schzophrenia or bi-polar disorder, but it is often prescribed as a sleep aid, for other mental-disorders, and many more then they originally said it would be helpful for. Most of the time when someone has hallucinations and aren't taking psychedelics or smoking pot then a mental disorder is most likely the case/problem.
Avatar f tn -Being drunk or high, or coming down from such drugs as marijuana, LSD, cocaine (including crack), PCP, amphetamines, heroin, ketamine, and alcohol -Delirium or dementia (visual hallucinations are most common) -Epilepsy that involves a part of the brain called the temporal lobe (odor hallucinations are most common) -Fever, especially in children and the elderly -Narcolepsy -Psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and psychotic depression -Sensory problem, such as blindness or deafness -Se
Avatar f tn My son (19) was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. At time of hospitalization he refused an MRI. Subsequently he agreed and a subarachnoid cyst 6cm X 4.5 cm anterior to right temporal lobe was found. He has c/o forgetfulness, h/a, and had a severe manic episode with auditory hallucinations and paranoia. Could all this be related to his cyst? No family history of bipolar disorder. Also, what would treatment be? Surgery? Expected recovery time? What are chances mania will recurr?
Avatar n tn Some sufferers of bipolar disorder may also suffer some psychotic features such as hallucinations or delusions that can be either mood-congruent or non-mood-congruent. However it is a lot more common for sufferers of bipolar disorder to have a delusional belief system rather than hallucinations.
Avatar m tn ve been experiencing visual hallucinations -- vivid, lifelike images that scare the he** out of me. This tends to happen in the evening or nighttime when I happen to awaken. I'll notice a person in my room, just standing there and staring at me. I kind of notice it out of the corner of my eye. Then, I stare right at the image...and it immediately vanishes. Needless to say, I've been freaking out and am afraid this is going to keep happening.
Avatar n tn Sufferers will also experience isolation, anxiety, and in your particular case...vivid hallucinations, nightmares, and psychotic episodes. Perhaps you should talk with your healthcare provider and try an anti hallucenogenic (sp?) to help curb your visions. I really hope you are doing better, as I am seeing this post in late June. I wish you recovery and peace in your mind and heart...
