Common Questions and Answers about Alcohol abuse liver enzymes

alcohol

Avatar n tn Our daughter was forced to have unsupervised custody last week where she informed us that he was vomiting all evening. I have researched symptoms of alcohol and Tylenol abuse and found possible signs of liver damage. For the concern of my daughter, we are extremely scared on what he is capable of when she see's him. We are hoping anyone who has experience on this could offer us advise.

Avatar f tn t know what you mean you don’t “abuse alcohol like that” you don’t have to be an alcoholic living on the street to have liver damage from alcohol. Some people have trouble with alcohol liver damage with less alcohol then others especially when combined with other health problems. American Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting your alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.
Avatar m tn This condition, called steatohepatitis, does cause liver damage. Sometimes, inflammation from a fatty liver is linked to alcohol abuse; this is known as alcoholic steatohepatitis. Otherwise the condition is called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH.
Avatar m tn congestive heart failure , cholestasis (congestion of the bile ducts) , cirrhosis, hepatitis , liver ischemia (blood flow deficiency), liver necrosis, liver tumor, high alcohol intake, use of hepatotoxic drugs (drugs toxic to liver). So, since the ALT rise is higher than that of AST and GGT is high, the cause is probably in liver. Since liver is enlarged and you have acid reflux and diarrhea, bile duct obstruction and cirrhosis (does ultrasound mention this?) will have to be ruled out.
Avatar m tn The enzymes spill into the blood when the liver cells are damaged. The enzymes will revert back to normal range, if the insult to the liver is controlled. So, avoid alcohol and take the medications prescribed by your doctor. And recheck the values after 4 weeks. Was GGT done? Normal value for Glutamyl Ttansferase (GGT) is 8-38. GGT can be used to screen for chronic alcohol abuse (it will be elevated in about 75% of chronic drinkers).
Avatar m tn I have liver enzymes coming back at 240...no one can figure out WHY? they started out at 167 in august 2010 as of November 2010 they are now 240...has mri's, ct scans, hida scan, ultrasounds, liver biopsy, all sorts of blood tests...WHAT COULD BE wrong that my doctors are missing? PLEASE help i am very desperate at this point!!!!
Avatar n tn My understanding is the ratio has some value when there is a significant elevation of liver enzymes but not when the enzymes are well within normal.
647554 tn?1227116482 r u speaking of liver enzymes? and no...an acute problem can cause elevation and then resolve..drinking and tylenol are major culprits especially when combined...some people are just more prone than others to this type of thing..there are people who can abuse 10s of thousands of mg of tylenol and top it off with alcohol and their liver actually becomes like concrete/immune to the whole thing..anf then others show the signs of liver damage...
Avatar f tn You have your diagnosis and is nothing more right now than a fatty liver but to continue alcohol abuse will guarantee you to move on to fibrosis. Your liver function is fine, AST/ALT are well with-in range. Your kidney function is also excellent. Nothing abnormal about the amount of liver cells dying off either. I am curious what the lab result were that prompted the ultra sound.
508257 tn?1210814422 I have the same problem with my liver enzymes and I don't abuse alcohol. I was admitted into the hospital because my liver enzymes were so high. The doctors still haven't figured out what the problem is. Please let me know how it goes with your sister and IF she gets diagnosed with anything. Let me tell you, it isn't fun at all to have this. I know how she feels.
Avatar n tn Possibly. It seems that liver damage is possible with amphetamine use, and alcohol would have made it worse. What really matters at this point is how you will take care of your liver from now on, and how you'll treat this condition, if it needs medical treatment. You can always ask your doctor what he/she thinks about it. They're not there to judge, and if you haven't told them, you need to so they can give you the best care possible.
Avatar n tn ALT and AST are referred to as liver enzymes. An elevation in these enzymes usually suggests a problem with the liver. I don't believe that your numbers are so high that they suggest any immediate danger so I would not panic if I were you. But they are elevated and you should seek expert medical advice. Probably the most common cause of an elevation like yours is fatty liver disease. If that turns out to be the case you may be advised to modify your diet and institute an exercise plan.
Avatar f tn If you usually have normal levels of liver enzymes,it can take up to 2 weeks to get back to those levels.
Avatar f tn Most liver diseases are characterized by greater ALT elevations than AST elevations except cirrohsis and alcohol abuse. So alcohol abuse is ruled out in your case. Raised alkaline phosphatase is often found in a growing child and at puberty. There are several bone disorders too that can raise this enzyme like rickets, osteomalacia, Paget’s disease of the bone, tumors, metastasis and recent fracture. In your case only alkaline phosphate is raised really high.
Avatar n tn I have no obvious symptoms of liver damage. I have had my liver enzymes tested twice, once during the heavy drinking and once after I stopped the alcohol abuse. Both tests were normal. My doctor brushes off my concerns of cirrhosis. However, knowing that cirrhosis is typically a silent disease until it has progressed enough to present symptoms, I am not comforted by my doctor's assessment. In addition, I noticed during my bout of drinking, about 1.
Avatar m tn s 2 drinks/day for a guy), you might just be OK (assuming the alcohol is the cause - other diseases and conditions can also cause elevated liver enzymes). If you have a hard time sticking to those guidelines, it might be that you have an alcohol problem and there are many resources to help you with that. If you want to see something I wish I would have seen when I was your age as it relates to alcohol, find the BBC documentary "Rain in my Heart" on youtube.
Avatar m tn You’ll be fine just don’t abuse alcohol. I have a Liver Transplant I drink but sparingly like a glass of wine for dinner and so forth.
1094370 tn?1317134825 Diseases that Cause Elevated Liver Enzymes in the Blood The most common diseases causing abnormally elevated ALT and AST are acute viral hepatitis, such as hepatitis A or B, chronic viral hepatitis, such hepatitis B or C, cirrhosis of the liver (scarring of the liver due to long standing inflammation of the liver), liver damage from alcohol abuse or alcoholic fatty liver, hemochromatosis (a genetic condition causing long standing liver damage due to iron build up in the liver), and diminished
Avatar n tn tylenol causes toxic metabolites in large amounts which damages the liver whereas in much smaller amounts the liver is able to compensate. It could be NASH--the only way of knowing would be a liver biopsy. I think you will be fine.
Avatar n tn Abnormally low or high amounts can signify bile duct obstruction, bone disease and alcohol abuse to name a few. As a general rule of thumb, the higher the elevation of GGT that is present, the more indication that there may be liver damage. Ultrasound is not used to measure the status of your liver's health so you shouldn't be fooled into thinking it can determine the degree or cause of your liver disease. You need a biopsy to know the status of your liver disease.
Avatar n tn I have an alcoholic friend. She has gotten very thin and doesn't look well. She has agreed to go see my doctor but WILL NOT admit to her drinking problem. If the doctor does a full physical, will blood tests bring out evidence of alcohol abuse? This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/721252'>Forum Guidelines - Please read before Posting</a>.
Avatar n tn Elevated Liver Enzymes can be the result of damaging liver disease, acute or prolonged use of medications or alcohol, or harmful exposure to a wide variety of environmental toxins (many of which you are probably exposed to every day). Livergenex is your safe, natural choice for lowering elevated liver enzymes and putting you on the path to a healthier more energetic life. Elevated liver enzymes indicate inflammation or damage to cells in your liver.
Avatar m tn As Lynn said, many factors can cause elevated liver enzymes. Including medications.Elevated liver enzymes means, that liver cells, are being damaged by something, could be a virus( Hepatitis), alcohol,or medications,or autoimmune ( Your own body attacks them). In your case, being overweight, certainly doesn't help, but I doubt it is something serious to do with your liver ( IM NOT A DOCTOR,JUST MY OPINION).
