Avatar f tn of heterosexually infected males. In 30+ years of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the US, only a relative handful of men (a few thousand) have acquired HIV through heterosexual exposre -- in a country with something like 120 million heterosexually active males. Further, most men infected heterosexually were the spouses or other regular partners of infected women, not infected during casual, one-time partnerships.
Avatar n tn So would I gather from your comments as well, that in this case you would not see it necessary to test for HIV? Infection rates in Africa are generally higher than the rest of the world Your detailed response has been most re-assuring, and I am most grateful to you for it.
Avatar f tn Millions of cases of an infection for which there is no vaccine, no effective treatment, and where case management is so expensive that it is beyond the reach of most patients," said Dr. Laith J. Abu-Raddad, co-author of the study and assistant professor of public health at the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Group at the Weill Cornell Medical College-Qatar." Alarming.
Avatar n tn The research findings are preliminary, but if they are confirmed, this might partly explain the especially high rates of HIV/AIDS in southern Africa and in African American populations in North America, including the trends in east coast inner cities. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Your english is perfect and yes it is true that Croatia has a very low rate of HIV infection. The message is getting through loud and clear in your country. Here in canberra where I live there is only 300 people who are HIV+ from a population of close to 600,000.We are done an excellent job in prevention.More needs to be done in countries like South Africa where the rates of HIV infection are in the million,it's a shocking mess and the government is to blame.
Avatar m tn According to the South African HIV/AIDS hotline , they say that if the condom has no failure ie broken then you are protected , South Africa has the highest infection rate in the world and the main preventetive measure that our government is trying to enforce is condom use , unfortunately in the black community condom use is not practises because of tribal belief systems still in place ...

I my shorts on and no underwear on and I was rubbing as well. Avatar m tn HIV prevention and education, along with effective treatment for HIV, is non-existent in some areas due to high poverty rates. In addition to the transmission methods that affect adults, mother-to-child transmission involving an infected, untreated mother is about 15-30% chance of transmission, with breastfeeding carrying a 10-20% chance of infecting the infant.
Avatar m tn m worried anyway, especially since I have heard that the rates of STDs are very high in South Africa, especially syphilis. Should I get tested for anything? What am I at risk for?
Avatar f tn For the most part, the rates of HIV are substantially lower in rural than urban areas. However, HIV/AIDS certainly is not absent in less populated areas of the US, and in some geographic areas the rates may be nearly as high as in urban areas. The rate may be higher in certain rural areas of the southeast than in urban areas in many urban areas.
Avatar m tn From your brief description, I would say the article you read was quite accurate. In the US and other industrialized nations, or wherever financial, infrastructural, and medical technology limitations are not serious, HIV infected people can expect to live nearly normal lifespans. It's a bit too soon to know if that prediction is truly accurate -- after all, we are only ~35 years into the known HIV/AIDS epidemic, and only 15 years into truly effective anti-HIV treatment.
Avatar m tn The rates of syphilis indeed are higher in parts of Africa than in most of the US, but syphilis by kissing would still be a very rare outcome in situations like this. You can safely assume your oral lesion isn't syphilis. You might avoid kissing your wife while you have it, out of caution in case it's oral herpes (unrelated to your extramarital exposure) -- but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.
Avatar m tn When is the earliest date I can take an HIV test. I am in South Africa one of the countries with the highest HIV infection rates in the world and PCR is allowed. Will PCR give me a good indication of my status? at how many days post exposure? SECONDLY when is the earliest for an Elisa TEST.
Avatar m tn i am reading a few threads here that say in South Africa the standard window testing period is 6 months , i live in South Africa and have been in contact with the AIDS hotline , rest assured that in South Africa the window period is 3 months , i have also read that 6-8 weeks is a good indicator ...
Avatar n tn Lizzy I did something stupid when i was in Africa , i made contact by tapping my exposed penile head on her privates -then penetrated about twice (thrusts), upon realisation I wore a condom , in a missionary position and at some stage let go to violently fall by means of gravity to penetrate as there was not much resistance...this is stupid and embaracing but now i am very sick-had oral leasons, chest infections, night sweat, joint pain and a runny stomach.
Avatar m tn Hiv is not that bad in Africa as people believe, i am born and raise in Africa and in my hole life of 24years only two people were diagonise positive from my community so relax man Africa is not equal to hiv, just wait and take an antibody test at 3month.
Avatar m tn The only reason say an African woman would be considered more infectious is because of the numbers of infected women in Africa in comparison to other countries where infection rates are low where women are concerned. It is a numbers game but at the end of the day a risk is a risk and protection is always the best policy.

Avatar n tn I also wonder this, how could so many men in Africa be infected with HIV if the transmission rate was really only 1 / 2000 encounters. I have a feeling that is on the very low end.
