Avatar f tn Eithne01, The treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has changed significantly since the late 1990s, with the development and subsequent approval by the Food and Drug Administration of imatinib (in 2001), the first of a class of medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which target the specific abnormality that causes CML. Before that time, patients were treated with other therapy, including interferon and bone marrow transplant, and had very poor outcomes.
Avatar n tn It is possible that the white blood cell count would normalize after 2 weeks of taking Imatinib (Gleevec). Most responses to Imatinib are rapid since it targets the molecular pathogenetic event in CML. You may seek a second opinion if that will give you a peace of mind. Good luck.
1004138 tn?1316251113 lots of people die all the time because they reject traditional treatments and go with 'natural' things instead I would think of using alternatives along with regular treatments, but not in place of them. Some alternative things might have some benefit. Isn't homeopathy the approach where you dilute some substance down to one part per billion or so, and then expect it to actually have some curing power?
Avatar n tn Are you currently on any medication like imatinib? The neutropenia can be due to your current medication. You can ask your hematologist for G-CSF injection if you have persistent neutropenia. Patients with CML are immunocompromised and can easily acquire infections. Neutropenia also puts a patient in an immunocompromised state. For now, it is very important to prevent acquiring any infection. You should avoid crowded places and persons with ongoing infection. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Hi. Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) is a blood disorder caused by an acquired genetic defect in the pleripotent stem cell. It has several phases: indolent chronic or stable phase, aggressive or advanced phase, and accelerated and blastic phase. The transition between phases may take years (on the average, 4 to 6 years from the stable phase to aggressive phase).
Avatar n tn , locoregional or distant recurrence or contralateral breast cancer), postmenopausal women with hormone receptor–positive breast cancer should consider an AI, either as primary adjuvant therapy for 5 years or sequentially after 2 to 3 years of tamoxifen to yield a total of 5 years of adjuvant endocrine therapy. Women who discontinue initial AI therapy before 5 years should consider using tamoxifen to bring the total duration of adjuvant therapy to 5 years.
484033 tn?1208516117 Hello: I just had a colon resection for a stage 2a tumor in the large colon. Thank God they found nothing in the liver, lungs, or 15 lymph nodes, but they want to follow up with "adjuvant" chemo. I might need the take home "pump yourself" type of treatment. I am very anxious about side effects. I don't do well with nausea and I have a phobia against vomiting. (ever since childhood). Any experiences you can relate?
Avatar f tn I had similar results from Adjuvant Online but was wary because my cancer was HER2 positive and that was not considered by Adjuvant Online. I really wonder how much the Adjuvant Online results would change if HER2 was included. I just finished 4 rounds of Cytoxan and Taxotere and am following up with Herceptin once a week for a year. The four rounds were not fun but if I can do it so can you. You will feel bad for about four days and will need a full week to get your energy back.
484033 tn?1208516117 Last April I had a colon resection after a tumor was removed. Stage 2a. I am on adjuvant therapy till Thanksgiving. I often get flat stools. Could this be due to scar tissue at the resection site, or should I worry about an extremely agressive cancer coming back since April? please advise.
Avatar n tn Hello, Femara (letrozole tablets) is approved for the adjuvant (following surgery) treatment of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor–positive early stage breast cancer. Femara is also approved for the extended adjuvant treatment of early stage breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are within three months of completion of five years of tamoxifen therapy. In the adjuvant setting, commonly reported side effects are generally mild to moderate.
Avatar f tn Six years ago, Herceptin may still not be standard of care for the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer after standard chemotherapy. This maybe the reason that your doctor did not mention or recommend this treatment. During that time, I think Herceptin is being used for metastatic Her2+ breast cancer and not for adjuvant treatment.
Avatar m tn With Gleason 9 disease and SV involvement you are certainly a candidate for adjuvant radiation therapy. A recent study in 2008 showed that patients with pT3 disease had a lower risk of biochemical recurrence when treated with radiation following their prostatectomy. In the early 1990s, 425 men were enrolled in SWOG (Southwest Oncology Group) 8794 with aggressive prostate cancer. They were randomly assigned within 16 weeks after prostatectomy into groups of adjuvant radiation or observation.
Avatar f tn Your present stage (I believe it is stage I) along with the findings of Her2 + and ER -/PR+ may warrant you to receive adjuvant chemotherapy with possible herceptin. Tumors that are larger than 1cm in the National comprehensive cancer network, are considered to benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy. You may also need hormonal treatment (like tamoxifen) after you undergo chemotherapy.
323001 tn?1227715723 s not even the vaccine itself that they have the reaction, but the adjuvant, which is an ingredient that is added to the vaccine to improve the immune response. Aluminum hydroxide is a common vaccine adjuvant, yet sometimes certain animals just have a problem with it.
Avatar f tn Average survival rates are generalizations, not applicable to a particular patient. The prognosis is relatively good. Newer techniques are being tried, including imatinib and stem cell transplantation. All the best, and God Bless!
483733 tn?1326798446 NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy) plus tamoxifen, as adjuvant, or "add-on" therapy, significantly improves survival in premenopausal women with operable breast cancer, a study indicates. This finding is particularly relevant for women in resource-poor countries where, unlike in Western countries, the breast cancer case burden mostly affects premenopausal women.
Avatar f tn Dear Kathy1124, Decisions regarding adjuvant treatment for breast cancer are based on several factors including size of tumor, lymph node status, as well as specific tumor characteristics you mention such as hormone receptor status and HER2 status. If adjuvant therapy is recommended in your situation there are several regimens that might be used. Treatments that would not be used are the hormone therapies that would be used to treat hormone receptive cancers.
Avatar f tn Dear Doreen789, It is generally recommended that pregnancy be delayed 2 to 3 years after adjuvant treatment for breast cancer is completed. The delay is not because of the influence of the pregnancy on the cancer, but rather to delay childbearing until after the time of greatest risk of recurrence of the tumor.
Avatar m tn hii, I m a research associate, I was working with Freund's Complete adjuvant that ccontains heat killed mycobacterium and is used for inducing arthritis in lab animals. while working with it, i got a small cut in my finger, which accidentally exposed to this adjuvant. after 1 day i am feeling tightedness in my jaw, aand pain while opening and closing it. please tell me am I a victim of Rheumatoid arthritis?
Avatar f tn A recent study confirmed the long-term superior efficacy and safety of anastrozole (Arimidex) over tamoxifen as initial adjuvant therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone-sensitive early breast cancer. It is apparently considered likely that this would hold true for the other AIs, such as Aromasin, but if you wish, you could ask your doctor about the possibility of trying Arimidex in place of Aromasin. Best wishes...
Avatar f tn The data is from the first large study to analyze early-stage breast cancer patients with HER2 positive tumors one centimeter or smaller. All these women would benefit from adjuvant Trastuzumab, also known as Herceptin, (for one year, the standard in America) - along with adjuvant chemotherapy. This represents a shift in the way women with early-stage HER2 positive breast cancer should be assessed for risk of recurrence and considered for treatment, according to the study's author.
Avatar m tn It is given to postmenopausal women with hormone responsive breast cancer. It can be given in the adjuvant or metastatic setting. Take care.
Avatar f tn I'm a 42 female and had a GIST in my stomach that the surgeon removed along with a part of my stomach and also my gallbladder was removed almost 3 months ago. The GIST came back as non-cancerous. I just started experiencing moderate pain right under my right side under the last rib right where my gallbladder was. The pain comes and goes every 4 seconds and lasted for 4 hours. It started out earlier today with being sore around that area and then the pain started.
