Common Questions and Answers about Adhd vs bipolar

Avatar f tn personally I do not think the diagnosis is an important element in your treatment. You have an extremely difficult situation with her husband away and two children in some question about your support from her mother. That is enough to make anybody depressed. I would address those issues first and see if you can create any better support during this critical period of motherhood. I would not worry about the diagnostic label.
207227 tn?1271416978 First, I have read the Bipolar Child, Is Your Child Bipolar, and ADD/ADHD books. I have a medical background and very knowledgeable about things medical. My daughter has been showing symptoms that are half ADD/ADHD related and half Bipolar Child related. The symptoms are about half of each. I have taken her to a psychiatrist who said she MAY have a mood disporder (unipolar) and put her on Trileptyl. She had an allergic reaction to this and we had to stop it ASAP.
Avatar m tn The moods of children who have ADHD or bipolar disorder may change quickly, but children with ADHD do not generally show dysphoria (depression) as a predominant symptom. Irritability is particularly prominent in children who are bipolar, especially in the morning on arousal.
Avatar f tn Look at this list of differences between ADHD and bipolar and see which category your child fits in. This is often misdiagnosed and ADHD meds are harmful for a child in a manic state (even caffine). 1. Destructiveness may be seen in both disorders but differs in origin. Children who are ADHD often break things carelessly while playing (“non-angry destructiveness”), whereas the major destructiveness of children who are bipolar is not a result of carelessness but tends to occur in anger.
6726276 tn?1421126668 s terrible the things you have had to go thru and really I think most people would feel the way you are feeling with all of this happening whether they had ADHD or Bipolar. Btw, I have undiagnoised ADHD along with Bipolar too. I was dx as being hyperactive as a child but as I got older it was very apparent that I had ADHD. I didn't feel the need for a proper diagnosis. I hope this helps a little. Hang in there!
1725558 tn?1309737496 Bipolar and Adhd both cause a person to be unable to focus on things and potentially have a low frustration tolerance at times but bipolar causes specific mood changes. The two concerns could overlap as to how they effect a person. If you are diagnosed with adhd then you could discuss all this with your psychiatrist. If you have symptoms you believe might be part of adhd then it would be important to call them to the attention of your psychiatrist as they might or might not be.
Avatar f tn no its not safe like the TV says) This is the problem - doctors see a nail and use a hammer - ADHD symptoms mask bipolar in many cases and as ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed thing around besides depression thats what they treat - after all theres good old Ritalin on the script pad and the clock and the wall and Oprah and everywhere else - course bipolar should be very careful of ANY stimulant drugs but hey the family doctor just wants the visit and the script.
Avatar f tn I have depression anxiety bipolar and now they have diagnosed me with adhd, everything really finally makes sense for the years and years my life has been a revolving door. I just feel alone and lost, people that don't have these issues have no idea the daily demons you have to face, is there anybody else out there?
Avatar m tn Many of his symptoms also suggest being ADHD. Below I have pasted a list of differences between bipolar and ADHD. They were sent to me by a fellow member and were written by Dr. Popper. The one thought I definitely had from your brief description is that he needs professional help - and fast! Don't go to your pediatrician (except maybe for a referral), seek out a pediatric psychiatrist. Best wishes!!
Avatar f tn Where to start, I have had rapid cycling bipolar disorder aswell as Adhd, since I was at least 13 yrs old, eldest son has bipolar disorder NOS and my yougest son has Adhd with additional emotional and behavioural problems prominent since he was at least 2 yrs old eventually treated with medication for the past couple of years.

Avatar m tn It is very common for people with ADHD to have depression and to be angry for that matter. There are clear differences between bipolar and depression or adhd anger. The following is for children, but it is also true for adults. "One diagnostic fallacy is to assume that these children have bipolar disorder. Dr. Dimitri and Ms. Janice Papolos recently devoted a full book to the disorder (The Bipolar Child, 1999).
Avatar f tn Its a post sent to me by another member on the differences between bipolar and ADHD. The fact that the meds so far used don't seem to work does make me wonder about the bipolar issues. Anyway, I definitely think its something worth looking into. And I don't know how far you are from a bigger town, but if one is close(or even far away) I would be looking for a pediatric psychiatrist.
Avatar n tn My Grandson has been diagnosed with ADHD ODD and BIPOLAR. He is currently taking 20mg of Mediate, 10 mg Abilify, 10 mg Prozac and .5 of clonidine in the morning. He takes a.5 clonidine at noon and at 4:00 P.M he take .5 clonidine and 10 of Ritalin. At bedtime he takes .5 of clonidine and 10 of Abilify. Most evenings he is so tired he wants to go to bed by 7:00 or 7:30. Can this be a result of all of this medication?
1211960 tn?1272974502 I have been diagnosed as bipolar and ADHD. I took a self test to deterime which kind of ADHD I had ( there are 6 different kinds.) The test results showed that I had Ring Of Fire ADHD. I was researching this specific type of ADHD and this is what I found: Type 6 -- The Ring of Fire. Cross between ADHD and bipolar disorder. Characterized by moodiness, aggressiveness, and anger. Anticonvulsants or newer antipsychotic medications tend to work better than stimulants.

1053987 tn?1279304510 Hi , I am also bipolar 2 and ADHD. I was very suprisd to hear I was ADHD, because like you I did not consider myself hyper. Then I started to see that I was one of those people that moves their legs and hands constantly! I can never seem to finish any project that I start, but I always thought that was just my bipolar, but my shrink told me that they often go hand in hand...he prescribed me adderall along with my bipolar meds and it seemed to even me out alot!
Avatar f tn This is a list of the differences between ADHD and Bipolar because they are very similar: 1. Destructiveness may be seen in both disorders but differs in origin. Children who are ADHD often break things carelessly while playing (“non-angry destructiveness”), whereas the major destructiveness of children who are bipolar is not a result of carelessness but tends to occur in anger.
7087196 tn?1389306119 While it is possible to have both conditions, bipolar and ADHD, the odds would favor ADHD. But it certainly would be helpful to know which one. If you haven't done so read up more on ADHD - this link might be helpful. http://www.help4adhd.org/en/about/what/WWK1 I really don't know much about working with Bipolar. I can help a lot with ADHD. If it does seem more like ADHD or if you wish more info on ADHD, please post back here or over here - http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn Then, I would give some thought to myself and read up on ADHD, and also explore other factors in myself and in my life sotuation could also explain those ADHD symptoms and characteristics he/she is talking about. I don't take everything my doctors say as gospel. A good clinician usually goes through a process of "ruling out possible consitions" and fine tuning down to the differential that support the final diagnosis or diagnoses.
Avatar n tn My doc wouldn't give that to me. He said if he gave me adderall (which had worked for my adhd before the bipolar), he couldn't treat the bipolar. I was getting depakote + an antidepressant. Instead, he gave me a drug that is not a stimulant but is used for adhd and as an antidepressant. Can't remember the name (10years ago), but there are alternatives to adderall.
