Common Questions and Answers about Adhd symptoms young child

adhd

Avatar f tn They can assess a person/child against a list of symptoms that are collectively named ADD/ADHD - for lack of much better understanding. When they test for the flu, they can list the symptoms and check them off (temp, ache, cough, etc), but they can also TEST for a virus and yes/no its there. But in medicine those symptoms alone can mean many things. Same for attention and hyperactivity. 2.
Avatar f tn all together. That seems to be alot of medication for a small young child. Im very worried for him, is this safe for him?
Avatar f tn Every parents cares about there child, in some cases child does not understand or ignore the things. Consult child doctor. I have some information that I want to share: All children get fidgety or impatient from time to time. Now and then, their attention wanders or they need to run around and blow off steam. And as we know, sometimes kids say the darndest things. But when inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior are the norm for a child, it may be a sign of ADHD.
1455599 tn?1285507900 I know this may sound strange but... Does your son still have his tonsils and adenoids? Many parents of ADHD kids have found that by having their child's tonsils and adenoids removed, their child's ADHD symptoms decreased significantly. Some of them, when tested a year after surgery, were no longer considered to have ADHD. I have a 3 1/2 year old who was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD in June of last year.
Avatar m tn I agree with JGF25, My daughter also goes to a small private Catholic School & her teachers have been wonderful & very helpful. Know the different options for treatment including psychological counseling vs medications. I opted for Concerta & it has been working well for her. I give it to her 7 days a week because she is ADHD, know the difference between ADD & ADHD. ADD is only Attention Deficit vs ADHD includes Hyperactivity.
Avatar f tn Well I dont think the ADHD would be a problem unless the child is prone to rages, personally I would supervise the play, the age gap is large and it may be good to encourage your child to play with children nearer his/her age group .
Avatar f tn For now, medications should control the symptoms and psychosocial support can tame the manifestations of adhd as well. Regards and God bless...
Avatar f tn is it that common to put a child that young under medication, or to diagnose him as ADHD , i am living in medial east.
Avatar m tn again, as I tell others, it's impossible to diagnose a child with ADHD. A LOT of children exhibit the exact same "symptoms" as a person with ADHD.
Avatar f tn And the rest of the link gives good advice on working with a child who has ADHD and is lying. And actually, its not bad advice if the child does not have ADHD. This is the article -- http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/2008.html Most kids have the self control to not to steal if they know its wrong. However, a very young child with ADHD does act pretty immediately on impulse and will grab things without thinking. Of course, you didn't say what he was stealing.
Avatar n tn t diagnosed until recently, at the age of 45, but outwardly my symptoms look different as an adult than they did as a child (and yet nobody recognized it back then!). When I was young, I couldn't sit in a chair without jiggling my foot, for instance. My nerves were always on edge, and I wish I'd realized sooner how much good exercise could have helped. I exercise more and have a job now that has both brain work and physical labor.
Avatar f tn We have her set up with a psychiatrist who agrees that she is definitely a strong-willed ADHD/ODD child. She is not medicated b/c of the age. Here are just some examples... She loves to pick a fight with a weaker-adult... (luckily, my husband and I don't put up with it, so it is more controllable at home). Last week alone, she cut a girl's hair - I mean CUT IT!!! because she "really wanted to" and she "Knew it was wrong".
Avatar n tn Diagnosing a child as young as 4 with ADD/ADHD would probably not be a good idea as kids vary a lot at that age and things that go along with ADD are normal 4 year old behaviors. For example, it is 5 minutes that a child of 4 should be able to sit and do a project. That is why preschools with the exception of open play have everything in super short increments. Throwing a toy when angry is not unheard of in a 4 year old. I would work to give him other ways of expressing it.
Avatar m tn In any case, care must always be taken in diagnosing ADHD in such a young child. Why? Because development has yet to occur to the degree that the diagnosis can become clear. Neurological development (ADHD is a neurological condiiton) occurs gradually over a course of time. I think it is too early to settle on a diagnosis of ADHD. More time needs to unfold.
1998316 tn?1328972756 What are the symptoms of adult ADD? Would i have had to have it as a child? I remember as early as 6th grade i had trouble remembering things, poor memory and concentration, depression, allergies (which i didn't realize i had). Now, i am taking antidepressants and Klonopin. I have been on antidepressants since a young adult and on Klonopin for a couple of years. I was on Xanax before that.
Avatar f tn I would seek a second opinion on his ADHD diagnosis. A 3 year old really shouldn't be diagnosed as such. Nearly all toddlers exhibit all (or nearly all) of the symptoms of ADHD - that is their nature. I can't say I agree with medicating a 3 year old for ADHD either, but that is my personal thought and I am not a medical professional. Some of the symptoms you referred to don't occur with ADHD - which is why I think seeking a second opinion would be helpful to you.
Avatar n tn And, to be truthful, it is often a risky venture to try to diagnose such a condition in a child as young as three in any case. By nature children this age are active and distractible and not in possession of a particularly long span of attention. Be sure he is having opportunities to be with peers in recreational situations. Social skills can improve only with 'practice'.
Avatar n tn Hi there I'm really worried about my little boy having adhd he's nearly 2 years old which I know is young to reconize symptoms of his age but his behavour is worrisome.if he can't do something straight away he gets angry and will hit, head butt anything near him.if i tell him no for anything he responseds in the same way but with me.his anger outbursts are very extreme considering he's from a calm household.
Avatar n tn From my personal experience (I was diagnosed at the age of 9 of having bipolar and ADHD), bipolar symptoms in kids can vary from bipolar in adults. Nine was a young age, especially back then (I'm 22 now), to diagnose a child with bipolar, and I would think that would still be somewhat true today... Because originally, I was diagnosed with an adjustment disorder, until my psychiatrist finally settled on me having ADHD and bipolar.
Avatar n tn It is really hard to diagnose ADHD in a child this young. both my daughters have it and the things you are describing are not any signs or symptoms they showed (they were not daignosed until first grade). You may want to talk to a psychologist and have them watch or monitor behavior, or sometimes they can give you a sheet to fill out according to behavior at home. Check it out.
Avatar f tn "Treatment starts with controlling adhd symptoms." When a childs adhd symptoms "are reduced there usually is an improvement in ODD symptoms. Stimulant medications have been shown to decrease adhd symptoms, as well as those of ODD, by up to 50%." In my opinion, the doctors have been not dealing with the cause of her ODD. Nothing you have stated is really recommended to treat adhd. My recommendation for a good adhd medication starts with a good doctor.
Avatar f tn It takes a very, very good psyc to get an accurate IQ score on someone with ADHD. It is even more difficult with a young child. The medication helps your child focus during the test - makes all the difference in the world! I would also assume that your child will start making up for some lost time in school on reading and math - which should improve his scores even higher. Please let me know if you need any more info on kids with ADHD. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn But, I have seen numerous times where when the child was diagnosed and the parent started researching adhd - they said, "wait, so that explains why I always acted the way I did." And ADD or inattentive adhd is very easy to miss by doctors, teachers etc. So point being, someone in your family could have adhd or add and unless you really know what to look for - you wouldn't know it. Point being, my brother-in-law has adhd.
Avatar m tn Actually, it really is ADHD and what you are describing are exactly the symptoms someone with ADHD would have. The fact that you are unaware of this means that your doctor (or someone) has not done a very good job at communicating with you. This is very sad because a child with ADHD really needs a whole different discipline schedule than a regular child. They also need a lot more help in school - hopefully he is getting that.
