Common Questions and Answers about Adhd symptoms for kids

Avatar f tn From personal observations, I think it is harder for really smart kids to deal with ADHD. The sense of frustration that they feel is huge, and this can progress to destructive behavior. All of the things that you have listed - I have seen in ADHD kids. What you need to do is to start to research what ADHD is and how to deal with the consequences of it. Understanding ADHD really makes a big difference in how you deal with the child. I mentioned the following books in a post below.
Avatar f tn It certainly is an inherited disorder for many - but not all kids. But, i have had kids in the classroom who have ADHD and their brother or sister did not. So it certainly is not guaranteed. By the way, I have seen the changes in how ADHD is treated over the years. Having spent almost 40 years in the classroom. It is being treated much better now then it was. And your little one (if they do have ADHD) will have an advantage in having parents that know what is going on.
Avatar m tn He has them more when nervous, anxious, excited or even bored as for a lot of kids with autism, adhd and sensory integration disorder (which is my son's diagnosis), do it to regulate and to stay engaged. Do you notice any pattern to it? When my son's anxiety comes down, it's better. When he has a hand fidget, it's better. We know this because we began paying attention to its pattern.
Avatar f tn "Treatment starts with controlling adhd symptoms." When a childs adhd symptoms "are reduced there usually is an improvement in ODD symptoms. Stimulant medications have been shown to decrease adhd symptoms, as well as those of ODD, by up to 50%." In my opinion, the doctors have been not dealing with the cause of her ODD. Nothing you have stated is really recommended to treat adhd. My recommendation for a good adhd medication starts with a good doctor.

Avatar n tn I have a 6yr old boy and a 9yr old girl and they fight all the time my son is adhd odd and may have some sycological issues he's on meds but he's getting really bad he's became violent with me and I just found out I'm pregnant it makes me alil uneasy because his favorite thing to do is kick me in my belly what do I do
Avatar f tn I have also had many, many kids with ADHD. I have had kids who I gave two to three days to finish a 25 question test. I have had a least two who died shortly after highschool. In short, I have seen both sides. All I want people to do is to recognize that the situation does exist. That there is more than one way to handle it. That it can be horrible for a child or an adult if they have ADHD and can't cope.
Avatar m tn I'm 17 and have been unsure whether I have ADHD for probably a couple years know, I don't really want to go see someone unless I'm really certain so does anyone know any good resources for people who aren't sure if they have it, lists of symptoms, blogs, obviously I've read the main stuff but if there's anything that goes into more detail that'd be great!
Avatar f tn You really need a lot more information since working with an ADHD child is very different than a kid without ADHD. I could go on for pages on what to do. But, I think it would be easier on both of us if you buy the book, "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley. Not only will it give you lots of things to do at home, but it will also show you how to work with the school so that it is more effective at helping him.
Avatar f tn i am a memeber of a social group for kids with aspergers, a few months ago a few of the mothers were talking about their children taking clonidine the moms noticed favorable results, i am familiar with this drug, i did not know that developmental pediatric doctors, are now putting aspie kids on clonidine, how do you feel about this?
Avatar f tn While lying is not ADHD, It is common for kids with ADHD to lie. "All children lie occasionally. But because of impulsivity and low self-esteem — and their tendency to make mistakes that they think need covering up — kids with ADHD are especially prone to stretching the truth. That worries parents." And the rest of the link gives good advice on working with a child who has ADHD and is lying. And actually, its not bad advice if the child does not have ADHD.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had any success/experience with neurofeedback/biofeedback for ADHD?
Avatar f tn It is usual protocol to wait until the earliest age of 6 before diagnosing for adhd because all kids before that age show so much variability in behavior. Many kids prior to 6 will be impulsive, hard to settle down, on the move, have no filter, talk in loud voices and move from thing to thing quickly without finishing something. I believe you could google adhd and find a listing of symptoms. It involves the nervous system and people will sometimes call these kids hyper.
Avatar n tn In, "The ADD/ ADHD Answer book," by Susan Ashley. She says on p62, that 60% of children with Tourette's have ADHD. But only 7% of kids with ADHD have Tourette's. Hope that helps. The book mentioned above is worth getting by the way.
5066424 tn?1363135569 Yes, frustration is a part of ADHD. The kids just can't understand why they can't do what other people are doing (primarily in school). The most important thing that you can do is to learn all you can about ADHD! There are some very good sites with excellent practical things you can do. This site has lots of helpful ideas - http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/911.html And another good overall site is http://www.help4adhd.
Avatar m tn We did without thinking of it and the doctor gave him meds for ADHD. When my son was 4 he was treated for ulcers and we got that under control, until now. Yes he is doing better in school but at the cost of his individuality and his stomach. I guess what I'm getting at is why teachers today can't handle the children like they used to. Is it really necessary to medicate 75% of children in school?
Avatar f tn It can have symptoms very similar to ADHD but is treated very differently. A great site I have found for information on this is here - http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/sensory-processing-disorder-checklist.html So those are the quick thoughts. I would definitely look at the SIDS site because you do treat that differently from ADHD. and he could have both. What is distressing to me is that he could have ADHD and the only help the doctors gave you is to prescribe meds?
973741 tn?1342342773 There are several things going on here. First some sports due to their required level of fitness will help a child for hours afterward stay focused. Sports like swimming (Michael Phelps), Cross Country, (and depending on the event) track, and Gymnastics all fit into this category. Also, in all these sports, you are competing against your self and usually don't have to worry about riding the bench. Then the age of the child is important.
Avatar n tn If the book Dr. Kennedy doesn't work I would have her evaluated for ADD/ADHD. By taking her to a physcatrist that deals w/ ADD & doing a test to rule it out. If it's ruled out wonderful. If she does have ADD/ADHD then the correct behavioral modification can be used. The consequences aren't always handled the same. & also diet can have a lot to do w/ behavior. A lot of times people don't think of ADD for issues like this, but ADD has many different symptoms.
Avatar n tn Is he on any medications for ADHD? Also, could you further describe what "putting in front of eyes tracking the movement" means?
Avatar f tn //www.additudemag.com/slideshows/books-for-adhd-kids-who-hate-reading/ And finally here are two links on adhd/add that will give you an overall view. https://www.additudemag.com/slideshows/symptoms-of-inattentive-adhd/ http://www.chadd.org/Understanding-ADHD/About-ADHD.aspx I hope this helps. Best wishes!
Avatar f tn Thank you for the info! The dr is starting him on ritalin. How important is it to refrain from alcohol while taking these type of meds? He is also on mood stabilizers.
