Also are side effects such as hair loss only a concern for long term suppressive therapy? Acyclovir seems to help but it seems like it would depress me even more if I lost hair or went bald because of it. One last question, does acyclovir cause concern in raising blood pressure.

i went today, he send me on therapy, for 6 month take acyclovir 400 mg bid. he says im under alot of stress and weight loss and it causing me the breakouts. i get them about 4 times a month. several breakouts at once. ive gotten std test done, ect, everything came out neg exept for hsv2. im hoping breakouts can go away, my provider said berrys are good for my imunne system and may control the breakouts...

But I'm here to ask about hair loss and taking acyclovir. Because of my medical insurance, I don't believe I'm able to switch medications, but because this is becoming more of a medical concern by losing hair, would my medical possibly cover another herpes medication?

Have been on acyclovir for a couple of years and my hair has gotten extremely thin on the sides and top. So depressing as this works for suppression. now I read that this seems to be more common aide effect than manufacture is aware of. Have read that valtrex also has the same side effect. how about Famvir? This is soo depressing and is the hair loss permanent?

I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?

the doses you take for recurrences do tend to give the headaches :( do you take advil or anything along with the acyclovir knowing that it's likely to cause you to get a headache?

Yes please talk to your dr, there are many things that could cause rapid or excessive weight loss and some of them can be serious. In addition to Thyroid and GI testing maybe ask about diabetes. It seems odd, but it can cause weight loss.
