Acyclovir vs valtrex cost

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir vs valtrex cost

zovirax

Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar m tn acyclovir needs to be taken twice a day for suppressive therapy.
Avatar m tn I was on valtrex but do to the cost switched to acyclovir. The period of time I was on 1000mg of valtrex I never had a breakout. I get them on my hip normally when I am about to menstruate. It has been about 2 months since the switch to 1xday 800mg acyclovir and I have experienced an outbreak. I don't understand why since they are the same drug?
Avatar f tn The daily suppressive therapy are the ones that I will have to take every day for the rest of my life right? do you know how much they cost? are they expensive like the valtrex? and also. I have been this burning sensation for about 2 days. Could that be linked to the herpes virus. can how can i reduce the burning sensation I tired the epson salt bath and it works for a little while and stops.
Avatar n tn i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Avatar m tn If you do get recurrences frequently, or you want to reduce transmission to a partner, you can take daily medication to help. Valtrex or acyclovir are the meds for that. Valtrex is once a day, but is generally more expensive. Acyclovir is twice a day, and is generally a lot cheaper. Most people decide what to take based on convenience vs cost.
Avatar n tn I've checked two local pharmacies and online. Blue Shield's price for Valtrex is $175.00 vs. Acyclovir at $10.00 per perscription. Tell me the manufacturers aren't trying to gouge us. This is a drug that's been on the market for decades, millions of people take it regularly, it has no adverse effects that I've found and there is no reason to pay that much for something used that widely and that often.
Avatar m tn , recently I was prescribed valcyclovir and pred forte drops. I am in the donut hole on my insurance and the cost is prohibitive. Is acyclovir 800 as effective as valcyclovir hcl or as costly?
Avatar n tn Usually the price goes down about 30% once it goes generic. The real advantage is for folks who have insurance that have a flat rate for generic prescriptions - right now valtrex is either on their no discount list or at a higher rate - for instance my own it's $30/month. Once valtrex goes generic - for my own insurance it drops it down to a $10/month charge for me.
Avatar f tn Ive been taking acyclovir (generic for zovirax) for about a year now. my doctor said its the same drug as valtrex but with valtrex you can get away with taking it once a day. I also dont have insurance and can not afford valtrex so thats why im taking this generic. I take 400mg acyclovir twice a day (which was very hard to get used to, but you have to!) and I get 180 pills (90 days) at Hy-Vee (grocery store) and Sam's club for $10. Other pharmacies charge upwards of $80 for just 30 days.
Avatar m tn Thanks for the response Grace. I understand that Valtrex is better at reducing transmission and that there is a generic version now. 1) Is the generic version as good as the original? 2) Do you know what the cost per month is for either the original and the generic for someone without insurance?
Avatar f tn no, not acyclovir ( xovirax ) cream. It's useless for herpes and too overpriced. You want to use acyclovir oral pills as outlined in the herpes handbook. fyi - if you are using the H balm system and a herpes antiviral like valtrex , acyclovir or famvir, you'll never know if the H balm worked or if it was the antivirals making it seem like the H balm system was working.
Avatar n tn but i noticed w people tha have light to mild symptoms use acylovair and it does reduce shedding unlike valtrex.
Avatar m tn Valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug. Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.
Avatar n tn Do report back to your doctor that the prescription is not helping, and that you may need to (a) double your dose, (b) try the brand name itself (Valtrex, rather than the generic valacyclovir) or (c) try an entirely different antiviral. Acyclovir works best for me and for many others, for example. I hope you find relief soon. There may be over-the-counter topicals that will help with the discomfort. I've heard that folks sometimes use the oral herpes ointments with success.
Avatar m tn Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
Avatar m tn d try acyclovir suppressively instead of the valtrex and see if that works better for you. Even though valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug, some folks just do better on the acyclovir than they do the valtrex. My guess would be because you get less active acyclovir in your body with plain ole acyclovir than you do valtrex but we have no studies to back this assumption.
Avatar m tn I have taking both Valtrex & Acyclovir in the past and for me, Valtrex seems to work a lot better for clearing up an ob quicker. Since moving back to the U.S. from Europe, I cannot believe how expensive Valtrex is here in the U.S.! I just want to get confirmation that there is a Generic Valtrex that is NOT Acyclovir - it that correct? My online pharmacy is offering me Valcyclovir which is a lot cheaper than Valtrex but I just want to make sure it isn't Acyclovir before I purchase it.
Avatar m tn acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
Avatar m tn I was previously on acyclovir 400 mg twice daily and my PCP changed to the famivir to see if it would work better. Before the acyclovir I was on 500 mg of Valtrex once daily but my insurance made me change to acyclovir. So far it has not. The Valtrex was working well and so was the acyclovir (I was having outbreaks about every other month) until about 2 months ago. When you say HIV is a long shot risk (a very long shot) how concerned should I be?
Avatar n tn Taking acyclovir 400 mg b.i.d. gives you the same effect as taking Valtrex 500 mg q.d.
Avatar f tn Is there any other treatment for recurrent herpes besides acyclovir and valtrex? I have never taken valtrex but have read that they are the same thing. I feel so bloated, tired and dizzy while on acyclovir. My dr said we could try valtrex...but if it's the same, what's the point? Any other people with similar side effects that found solutions?
