Acyclovir topical

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir topical

famvir

Avatar n tn topical acyclovir is ineffective for genital herpes recurrences. it should never be prescribed because it basically wastes your money. Your provider needs to update their prescribing information and stop prescribing it to their patients.
Avatar m tn (at least I think it was an ob, i am never 100% sure.) anyway I took my prescribed acyclovir and now recently my butt is feeling like it is bruised (although there is actually no bruise or anything to see physically) Just wondering if this is a normal thing to feel post outbreak? or is it a sign of viral shedding? or is it about to be another ob? Most importantly I want to know how long it is safe to have sex with my partner again after feeling this "bruising"?
Avatar n tn Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts. Even cheaper yet, hold an ice cube to the cold sore !
Avatar m tn I went to the doctors to get checked out, and he took a look and prescribed me Acyclovir. I have been taking acyclovir for the past 20 days and my outbreak is still there no of the lesions have popped and gone away. I have been bringing a ton of water and not eating processed food. Shouldn't it have cleared up by now? This is my initial outbreak and like I said before it has been three weeks since the start of the outbreak now. Any advice would be appreciated.

1569575 tn?1314424059 s been there less than 3 days, give your doctor a call and ask them to phone in a prescription for acyclovir for you. you can get a round of 200mg acyclovir ( 30 pills ) for $4 at walmart pharmacies with a prescription. You need to start it as soon as you can though in order for it to help speed healing.
Avatar f tn I also started to get a cold sore in my typical spot on my lip that night. I started acyclovir I had on hand, thinking maybe this giant infection could be HSV1 too. I then sent pictures to an online dermatologist who thinks it’s a combination of dermatitis and bacterial. He prescribed doxycycline in conjunction with with the cephalexin and acyclovir and topical Desonide. Last night it was oozing yellow more. Does anyone think there’s something else going on? This is a picture of it now, dry.
Avatar f tn Your comments in other threads seem to indicate that taking Acyclovir at 400 mg 2x per day is the equivalent of taking the Valtrex at 500 mg 1x per day. Is this correct? I hope so because Valtrex is $225 versus Acyclovir at $17 per month. I also spoke to a friend who has had herpes for over 20 years before either drug was around....just topical creams. She now takes Acyclovir (since it came out) effectively 2x/day with no breakouts.
Avatar f tn Although it is a self-limited illness, topical antivirals, particularly topical acyclovir, have been shown to be effective in decreasing the duration of symptoms. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar n tn Thank you Grace for your reply. We have found that acyclovir, 400mg twice daily, seems to keep the virus at bay. When there is an outbreak, usually caused by intense stress, the daily acyclorvir shortens the healing time. We have also used, in the past prior to starting the acyclovir, red marine algae, a potent viral and bacterial killer, and lecithin to control the outbreaks. Those two items did very well.
Avatar f tn So was in a relationship with a man in Jan and we were having unprotected sex we are no longer together. Then on Feb 23rd I stated to have yeast infection symptoms the itching and burning on urination. I actually get yeast infections often so I went and bought a 3 day treatment well it didn't seem to help so I was just leaving it alone and going to let it go away on its own but it never really did go away.
Avatar f tn REcently broke out with a bad herpes sore on my lip and currently taking 1mg of valtrex along with topical cream. Anyone know other remedies to treat the sore along with what I am currently doing.
Avatar m tn 70 year old, white male. I have what I believe are classic symptoms of red scrotum syndrome. Red scrotum from base of penis to my anus. Darker red/purlple mid-line skin on scrotal sack. Burning, no itching constantly. I have used various soaps and a topical shea, chamomile & aragon oil ointment with little to no positive effect. In fact, this seems to be getting worse. I have been recently prescribed 3 new blood pressure medications...Telimsartan, Amilodipine and Carvedilol.
Avatar f tn Take antiviral medications like Acyclovir and Valtrex can help. Some topical creams like Prosurx or Acyclovir are also effective in keeping herpes sores dry. Besides, you should wear cotton underwear to avoid irritation. Immeditaely keep the sores clean and dry after taking bath by a soft cotton towel, and don't forget to wash the towel.
Avatar f tn Oral acyclovir or the recently developed drugs, valacyclovir (Valtrex) or famciclovir (Famvir), lessen the symptoms and frequency of fever blister recurrences for some patients. These drugs prevent HSV from multiplying and are effective when taken in pill form prior to an outbreak of the virus. Topical antiviral creams containing acyclovir (Zovirax) or penciclovir (Denavir) may also help in limiting the extent or duration of lesions if applied promptly to affected areas.
Avatar n tn It first appeared as blister like bumps on my upper inner thigh, then soon after I developed bumps and small leisions around my vajay-jay. Grace, where can I get this acyclovir??? Is it a topical ointment or a pill I would take regularly?? Or just during an outbreak??
Avatar f tn if you have a prescription from your provider, you can get a round of acyclovir for $4 at walmart to treat ob's when they occur. If it's been more than 72 hours though since your recurrence started, not much bang from your buck to be had from antivirals at this point. you can try something as simple as soaking in the bathtub with epsom salts thrown in for comfort. dermoplast spray ( the blue can for the genital area, not the red can ), is also helpful for pain relief.
Avatar f tn how did they diagnose you as having genital herpes? What testing have you had done so far? I know it seems awful but it really isn't as bad as it seems at the moment. give yourself time to deal with all of this. The herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com is a free and terrific resource as is the patient counseling video on the same website. also Terri's book "the good news about the bad news" is well worth the $15 they charge for it on amazon too for more reading.
Avatar n tn I was given topical steriods and topical anti-fungal creams only, but they are only a quick fix, after not using them for more than 2 days, Im right back where I started.
Avatar f tn After visiting the doctor and receiving oral antibiotics and a topical antibiotic and corticosteroid, the lesion was quickly not painful, reduced swelling and seems to be pink and healing. The doctor diagnosed as a herpes simplex 1. When I asked what else it could be she said herpes. I was not happy with the diagnosis and so am asking your opinion.
Avatar f tn Two years ago I started getting outbreaks almost monthly and about a year later went to the doctor who prescribed Acyclovir. I was prescribed 800mg once a day. The diagnosis was visual and a blood test was not taken. I believe the swab came back negative because the lesions were not "fresh". Anyhoo, since being on the meds I continue to get outbreaks every month or two. A week ago I got another OB in a new location and was prescribed Valtrex 1MG 1x day.
Avatar m tn first off - topical acyclovir is of little use to help speed healing. 2nd of all it shouldn't be used inside the mouth or swallowed. the prescribing info specifically says not to be used inside the mouth or nose. acyclovir is an antiviral. it doesn't help with fungal infections. Whatever caused your thrush on your tongue to go away, it wasn't the acyclovir. odds are this isn't hsv1 orally going on anyways to be honest.
Avatar m tn 1st ob was bad, ulcers on foreskin for 3 weeks plus not healing until I was diagnosed and started on acyclovir, which then took care of it by 1 week of treatment 3 months ago, I've started on methotrexate to treat my sarcoidosis and about 2 month into treatment, Ob started as I noticed an ulcer at the inner part of my pee hole(urethra) I started acyclovir around day 4-5 post ob and now it's been 5 weeks since it started and it's not healing..
Avatar f tn Besides the zovirax ointment, which is difficult to administer since his lips are so sore, are their oral meds vs. topical that would be effective and safe? My pediatrician says he's too young for suppression therapy, but I've read other places that it's available for children under 12. Very frustrated, and just want to give my son some relief.
