acyclovir side effects in infants

I am currently in a long term relationship, fully disclosed sexual history - but I am resisting suppression therapy. In a previous relationship I tried this for a year and found the side effects to be horrible - confusion, anxiety, agitation, poor typing skills, eye-blinking and muscle flickering. I want to avoid passing the virus to my partner, but I cannot live a happy life with the side effects of Accyclovir.

The reported side effects of acyclovir include hallucinations, psychosis, lethargy, mood changes, and confusion. However, most of these occur in much higher doses than yours. Also, I stress "reported"; cause and effect is unclear. The specific words you use -- mood change, irritability, and depression (which is what your sympoms, as a group, suggest -- as you probably know) have not been described, but I suppose it is possible.

With all the stress in my life these days, my outbreaks have become much more frequent and for whatever reason, I am now having some unpleasant side effects from acyclovir, like headache (tolerable), weird taste in my mouth and excess salivation, and a heavy feeling in my legs and arms.

valtrex and acyclovir have the same basic side effects. Valtrex is turned into acyclovir inside the body.

give the acyclovir a try - you get less active acyclovir with plain acyclovir so you might have less side effects. You also can try famvir too.

The side effects are too severe to continue on Valtrex. Dr. said to try acyclovir, but research shows it has the same ingredients only in lower milligram strength. Has anyone, who couldn't tolerate Valtrex, have success with acyclovir?

Acyclovir is one of the safest drugs available. In initial research with it, side effects were identical in frequency and severity with those reported by control subjects taking placebo, and there is nothing in your symptoms that suggest acyclovir is the cause. Taking lots of fluids won't hurt, and will keep your urine less concentrated (hence less coloful), but there is no need for extra fluids while taking acyclovir.

hi, jenifer1303 I think you have side effects with acyclovir. In most cases, people have no side-effects with this treatment, but it may occur in rare situations. Need to meet your doctor, again.

Actually yes some of us are pretty familiar with the studies in that article. It's one we've discussed quite a bit in the past ( as well as the individual studies in it ). The medscape article is a terrific one because it's a reprinting of a compendium of all the lysine and herpes studies out there for easy reference ( and beats reading thru all the studies individually ).

I just asked if there were side effects. He said that there could be some anxiety because it crosses the blood brain barrier and I just thought that drugs that did that could potentially be more harmful. That's why. I take Lamictil for a type of bipolar that is classified by some as soft bipolar or part of the bipolar spectrum and sometimes experience anxiety (not often) and I was concerned about about the anxiety part as well. I also take a low dose of Wellbutrin.

Honestly, in my opinion, babies are so wrapped up in this new world, all the new things going in for them, that a little cold (virus) hardly slows them down. it could be your baby is behind because she doesn't feel well all the time, and THAT is holding her back. Maybe not, but in either case I would push for them to figure it out. Chalking it all down to a virus is a lazy, sorry excuse. My point is, YOU DO know your child more than anyone.

Hi, you can google side effects but what your describing appears more a a pinched nerve issue since it comes and goes depending on how your sitting. Try putting a pillow under your calfs at night while sleeping to see if that helps.

It has now been a few more days with treatment of Acyclovir and there maybe a subtle increase in sensation on the left (affected) side Whereas after my surgery, things only got worse). Based on the assumption that this was caused by HSV-1, would I have seen more improvement? Thanks for your time!

There are no long term issues with using acyclovir. They have info on folks using it non-stop suppressively for over 20 years without any issues. 200mg 2x/day isn't going to do squat. You need to have it increased to the proper doses for it to do any good at all.

Do all meds for suppression have similar side effects, such as headache? Acyclovir seems to be cheapest; I assume it is as effective as Valtrex? Do the side effects improve with time? I appreciate your feedback very much. It's hard to find good info.

I have always take acyclovir when I have a cold sore, and never had too much of an issue with side effects until my last prescription. They upped my dose from 200 mg to 800 mg (different doctor), and I had all kinds of problems and only ended up taking them for 2 days. After the 2nd day on the 800 mg, my eyes became very irritated and my lips developed a rash and broke out in fordyce spots. Not sure if it is all a coincidence, but still have the same lip and eye problems 30 days later.

hi vaginaprobzx100. my outbreaks i expect look like typical outbreaks. in order to get diagnosed though i had to have a western blot done. the regular test was consistently negative. I've had this for 10 years so i know how it behaves. it is MOST DEFINITELY more active when SSRI's or 5-htp are involved. in fact, way down on the list of side effects for celexa under uncommon is "herpes outbreaks". it's not my imagination.
