Acyclovir side effects

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir side effects

zovirax

Avatar f tn The reported side effects of acyclovir include hallucinations, psychosis, lethargy, mood changes, and confusion. However, most of these occur in much higher doses than yours. Also, I stress "reported"; cause and effect is unclear. The specific words you use -- mood change, irritability, and depression (which is what your sympoms, as a group, suggest -- as you probably know) have not been described, but I suppose it is possible.
Avatar f tn With all the stress in my life these days, my outbreaks have become much more frequent and for whatever reason, I am now having some unpleasant side effects from acyclovir, like headache (tolerable), weird taste in my mouth and excess salivation, and a heavy feeling in my legs and arms.
Avatar f tn valtrex and acyclovir have the same basic side effects. Valtrex is turned into acyclovir inside the body.
Avatar f tn give the acyclovir a try - you get less active acyclovir with plain acyclovir so you might have less side effects. You also can try famvir too.
Avatar f tn The side effects are too severe to continue on Valtrex. Dr. said to try acyclovir, but research shows it has the same ingredients only in lower milligram strength. Has anyone, who couldn't tolerate Valtrex, have success with acyclovir?
Avatar m tn I just asked if there were side effects. He said that there could be some anxiety because it crosses the blood brain barrier and I just thought that drugs that did that could potentially be more harmful. That's why. I take Lamictil for a type of bipolar that is classified by some as soft bipolar or part of the bipolar spectrum and sometimes experience anxiety (not often) and I was concerned about about the anxiety part as well. I also take a low dose of Wellbutrin.
Avatar f tn My main concerns are price, effectiveness, and side effects. Has anybody know of any serious side effects for taking these anit-virals for a year? I know it varies from person to person and it can be hard to gauge, but how much of a difference does the therapy treatment make in your life? Also any tips for finding a good price? I saw an excellent post on this site a few days ago about buying the medicines, but I am having problems finding it now.
Avatar f tn I have always take acyclovir when I have a cold sore, and never had too much of an issue with side effects until my last prescription. They upped my dose from 200 mg to 800 mg (different doctor), and I had all kinds of problems and only ended up taking them for 2 days. After the 2nd day on the 800 mg, my eyes became very irritated and my lips developed a rash and broke out in fordyce spots. Not sure if it is all a coincidence, but still have the same lip and eye problems 30 days later.
Avatar n tn Do all meds for suppression have similar side effects, such as headache? Acyclovir seems to be cheapest; I assume it is as effective as Valtrex? Do the side effects improve with time? I appreciate your feedback very much. It's hard to find good info.
Avatar n tn There aren't any long term side effects. they have info on folks being on acyclovir suppressively for 25+ years now.
Avatar f tn Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant which is also indicated in diabetic neuropathy. Common side effects are dizziness, ataxia, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, joint pain, motion sickness etc. You must tell your physician if you are allergic to valacyclovir or acyclovir. any kidney disease, blood disorders, immune deficiencies, dizziness etc. side effects associated are nausea, vomiting, fatigue, sore throat, hemolytic uremic syndrome etc.
Avatar f tn s awful going through the trial and error of finding things that work, but maybe if valtrex or acyclovir works, it will help focus on what other side effects (and I don't know what you're having, so I don't mean to minimize them) you can live with, and which ones you can't on each med. Please hang in there.
Avatar f tn probably just after effects of the shingles. There's no way Acyclovir is the culprit. Also the fact you felt really good from the medication was a coincidence. Headaches can be a side effect of depression/anxiety. Treat that and you treat the headache.
Avatar f tn Hi everyone. Am hoping to get some advice. Has anyone had any experience with changes in vision since taking acyclovir as suppresive therapy? I've been taking it about 8 months now and didn't have any noticable side effects. But recently I've had vision problems... blurred vision and a rash on my eyelids.
Avatar m tn Not really - I suppose they're possible, but not very common. It sounds more like you've had a reaction to something you ate.
Avatar m tn Are there any long term side effects from acyclovir use? I have read that hair loss is a side effect. Has anyone experienced this? Also I am confused about the whole genital hsv 1 thing. The doc told me this would not be a big deal and that Type 1 rarely recurs in the genital area. Is it possible that I am still experiencing the initial breakout or are these recurrances? Its only been 4 weeks. Any advice would be appreciated.
