Acyclovir resistant hsv

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir resistant hsv

zovirax

Avatar m tn No, having an outbreak on antivirals isn't all that unusual. It does stop them entirely for some people, and in others, it just reduces them. It's still possible to get outbreaks while on them. I wouldn't worry about resistance, or the medication not working any longer. Maybe you have a trigger that you don't know about? Is it cold where you are, or maybe you're eating something that's triggering it? Have you been sick - the flu or a cold? Really stressed or fatigued?
Avatar m tn Just wondering if genital herpes (HSV 2) can become resistant to valtrex over time. Been on it daily nearly two years and just had only my second outbreak. Not a bad one, but one none-the-less. Some things I've read indicate that this is possible. I'm certainly hoping that's not the case. Thanks.
Avatar f tn First, it is rare for herpes to change its recurrence pattern. An increase in frequency of symptoms usually isn't herpes. Second, herpes never recurs as frequently as you seem to be experiencing. Third, it is very rare for herpes to become resistant to treatments like acyclovir; failure to improve is evidence against herpes as the cause. This isn't definite. Herpes can become resistant to acyclovir.
Avatar f tn It is not usual to be resistant to acyclovir, it doesn't attack the virus directly, but removes the building blocks of the virus. It may be that you have another immune issue. People with thyroid issues for example can experience ongoing outbreaks. Is your diet healthy? Are stress levels up? I'm not a fan of supplements as I don't believe they substitute or add to the positive properties of a good diet.
Avatar n tn In addition, the symptoms you describe do not suggest genital herpes, which does not cause the vague sorts of things you mention. I find it interesting that you took acyclovir during your sexual relationship with your HSV-2-infected partner. No knowledgeable provider would prescribe it in that fashion; there are no data to show it prevents transmission when the uninfected partner takes anti-herpes therapy. (Logically, it probably would help, just no data available.
Avatar m tn I would like to go through basic std investigations...let me Knw the investigations...
Avatar n tn 1) Does preexisting HSV-2 definitively protect you against HSV-1? Does it matter where the HSV-1 is located; i.e. oral or genital? I am afraid to kiss this guy because of the severity of my HSV-2 symptoms. I cannot imagine what having oral HSV-1 on top of my genital HSV-2 would be like given that my HSV-2 symptoms are so severe, constant and uncontrollable (see below). If the answer is yes, PLEASE direct me to studies so that I may further educate myself.
Avatar n tn Second, it is almost impossible for herpes to not undergo substantial improvement within 2-3 days after starting an antiherpetic drug like acyclovir, and 7 days is far too long. HSV can be resistant to these drugs, but that occurs almost entirely in people who have been taking the drugs for a long time, typically for many months. And it's usually limited to people with severe immune deficiency, like AIDS, cancer chemotherapy, etc.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if what I am describing as a chance of herpes? If I am on dailly acyclovir does that help me with resistant of HSV2 infection? Keep in mind I do have a high anxiety of herpes and HIV. What would be the next step since my sore is almost healed? If it is herpes what are the chances I received this from the friend 5 weeks ago or the girl im dating last week. Thank you Thank you for your time.
Avatar f tn (I understand that this is the dosage for an episode, but she told me to take it 3-times a day everyday as suppressive therapy). From what I can tell, the Acyclovir is having little effect on my HSV-1 symptoms--preventing or treating them. (1) Can you recommend any experts or specialists in Boston?
Avatar n tn thanks for the input. since i have had a positive culture, and have an obvious lesion with each ob, i am pretty confident that hsv is my issue. it's possible i have other things in conjunction with the hsv, but the hsv is my main issue right now. other than the obs, i don't seem to have any yeast or bacterial issues when no ob is present.
Avatar m tn Finally, you should be aware of the important differences between genital HSV-1 and HSV-2. Nobody wants genital herpes, but if it happens, HSV-1 is definitely preferred! The frequency of recurrent outbreaks and the potential for transmission to future partners are much lower than for HSV-2. For more information, see the thread linked below. I hope this has helped.
Avatar n tn hello-i am a 28 year old female with hx of hsv-1 with frequent breakouts...just this year i've had 6 cold sores. I take oral valtrex if i feel the prodrome and this really helps shorten the duration. Recently, i became sexually involved with male partner, HSV-2 positive x 7 years, outbreak-free x 3 years and on daily suppressive therapy. We have had unprotected sex so I know I am at risk. My question is: Is there any benefit or harm in going on suppressive therapy myself.
Avatar n tn Also, it is conceivable that you now have a new HSV-2 infection, on top of the previously documented HSV-1. Herpes due to HSV-1 doesn't usually recur so soon. Having a new HSV-2 infection is unlikely, but it still is worth checking out to be certain. Return to the clinic as fast as possible -- today if they are open on Saturdays, or for sure on Monday. Having said all that, herpes outbreaks often vary in severity.
Avatar f tn How effective is acyclovir as daily suppression therapy for Hsv-2? How must it be taken to cut down on viral shedding?
Avatar m tn Dear Doctor Thank you for your valuable time. Here is my background I am a male in my early 40s. March 9,2008 gf had a cold sore. i got my blood work done March 25,2008. April 25,2008 immunoblot igg blood test results came back hsv-1positive & hsv-2 negative. no igg value was listed (i live in toronto). since then i will have tingling and burning lips pretty much every week. i apply 5%zovirax and take 1gram of valtrex everytime i feel something is coming on.

Avatar n tn anti HSV 2 IgG negative (0.32) and anti HSV2 IgM positive (1,22) i have never test after that, that guy result positif 3,33 for IgG HSV2, the rest negative. 1. i still with my steady bf,nvr had sex, heavy petting n oral after 12 nov, n i already make him do test in 12 dec all negative.in january 4, i think i had another outbreak, have taken the acyclovir for 5 days again for the 2nd outbreak. Can i still infected him now?even though the bump and sores are gone? 2. how to protect my bf?
Avatar f tn Even though your BF has not had cold sores that he is aware of, the fact that you both have positive blood tests mean that you are both infected and therefore are resistant to further infection with HSV-1. Persons with HSV-1 infections do not spread their own infections to other parts of their body and, except in extraordinary situations, do not get further infected with HSV when exposed to sex partners infected with the same type of HSV.
Avatar m tn People are immune (or at least highly resistant) to new infections with the same type of HSV they already have. Therefore, it is uncommon for someone with prior HSV-2 to acquire a second HSV-2 infection. Therefore, couples in which on has herpes never "ping pong" their infections back and forth. For example, it is unnecessary for you and your wife to avoid sex if either of you is having an outbreak (excpet maybe for compfort if lesions are painful).
Avatar m tn Recenlty I was tested and came back postitve for HSV-2. My first outbreak which was a single blister turned ulcer and then healed over lasted about two weeks to fully close up and heal. I was given Acyclovir dosed at 400mg taken 3 times a day for 5 days. After I finished my first dose of Acyclovir I went to speak with my primary Dr about being put on a daily suppressive thearpy. He prescribed me Acyclovir again, but dosed at 800mg taken twice daily.
632033 tn?1222423034 suppressive therapy with acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day. the rates of acyclovir resistance are still the same as they were when the medication was first discovered for use with herpes over 25 years ago. No worries about resistance.
Avatar n tn Awaiting another derm appt.Took acyclovir for a few years prophylactically as occurrences are 3-4 times per month. Went off meds (worry about long term effects) and just bore with it for a few years. Then recurrences became very frequent and it is the pain prior that is most difficult - I get severe pain in my head, and behind my eye. The pain is debilitating. I recently began taking Valtrex 500 and it has helped enormously but I have some questions.
Avatar f tn For hpv I had type 11 and for hsv 2 I had positive 1.3. Shortly after my doctor prescribed acyclovir 200mg 4x a day.
