Acyclovir liver

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir liver

famvir

Avatar f tn if i drunk acyclovir because of hsv1 can that affect on my hiv testing? i was tested 7 weeks after the exposure. i had only 1 risk sexual contact and this person was also tested after 1 week of exposure and found negative for hiv and hcv and hbsag. the test that was used was elisa test 4. generation for bouth of us. is it possible that the result is false negative because of the acyclovir use (this person did not take any medicine at the time)?
Avatar f tn Just wondering the different between Valtrex and Acyclovir (benefits, symptoms, cons etc.) I know that the liver turns Valtrex into Acyclovir, but are there any other things I should know when picking a drug to take? Also is taking 400mg of Acyclovir enough for suppressing viral shedding, or is 400mg 2x daily going to suppress viral shedding that much more. What is an estimated percentage of suppressing viral shedding with both aforermentioned doses?
Avatar n tn herpes antivirals are not stressful on the liver or the kidneys. acyclovir has 25 years of non-stop suppressive therapy use behind it now that proves its safety.
Avatar m tn I was was also detected pre diabetic with Ha1bc 8.5 and SGOT and way high at 220. I was kept under Acyclovir 400 gms thrice a day. It worked. After 3 weeks I was told to reduce the dosage to 2 times a day and do the test again after 3 months. After 3 months my diabetic condition was better controlled at ha1bc 6.4. An i did not have any outbreak of the HSV 1. But the second test after 3 months had a increased igg value from 5.1 to 6.3.
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar n tn s the same medication, just less active acyclovir is absorbed by the body so usually you have less side effects. No worries about liver issues either. We have info on over 25 years of acyclovir without any long term effects ( since valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug, same lack of issues but only 15 years of info on it which is still good ). how often do you see your partner? if it's once a month or more, might as well just take suppressive therapy every single day.
Avatar f tn there isn't any risk to your son's liver from taking acyclovir. their provider needs to better educate himself on acyclovir. we start children on oral acyclovir suppressively from month of age upward as needed. no need for any labs or anything either from it. the arginine/lysine theory never panned out outside of the lab actually. They are even using arginine to treat herpes in research now. Children drink a lot of milk which balances it out anyways.
Avatar n tn I have recently found out that I have HSV-1 (IgG=41). Not sure if it was from past sexual encounters or even before that, but doesn't matter anymore. I've read somewhere online before that taking acyclovir or valacyclovir every day consistently might result in a negative HSV test. My questions are: 1. Does that work and is that recommended, if not, why? 2.
Avatar m tn I stopped taking Valtrex due to elevated liver enzymes, then my enzymes gradually come down... when I take Valtrex, have a liver test... Enzymes become elevated. I finally quit Valtrex, took milk thistle.... What a shocker. My liver enzymes are perfect now. Be careful when taking Valtrex long term, it can inflame your liver.
Avatar f tn the prescribing info for acyclovir I believe states you don't need routine kidney or liver testing. I haven't read it in awhile but you could check that out. They stopped recommending routine blood testing while on suppressive therapy probably about 20 years ago. 200mg daily isn't an adequate dose at all. do you have hsv1 or hsv2? do you have it genitally or orally? does your partner have herpes?
Avatar f tn If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 Here's one that showed a reduction in recurrences, but not in healing time - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
Avatar m tn i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
Avatar m tn Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
1302779 tn?1287405029 the doses you take for recurrences do tend to give the headaches :( do you take advil or anything along with the acyclovir knowing that it's likely to cause you to get a headache?
Avatar m tn Does Acyclovir make anyone else feel completely terrible? I get terrible headaches, dizzy, diarrhea and feel just awful. im not sure which is worse sometimes.
Avatar f tn I did some research and found out about monolaurin capsules(derived from coconut and not bad for your kidneys/liver like valtrex, acyclovir etc). Monolauric acid removes the protective shell of the herpes virus and let the body's immune system attack and destroy it. These capsules and the use of teatree essential oil (applied topically at the site of first tingle) have stopped my outbreaks. It feels like a miracle to finally get some relief.
Avatar f tn give the acyclovir a try - you get less active acyclovir with plain acyclovir so you might have less side effects. You also can try famvir too.
Avatar f tn Hi Grace I did go see a neurologist and he said I had post herpetic neuralgia from taking the meds, which is also why I stopped. Should I consider Acyclovir? How long can you take Acyclovir before it impacts my liver? From your experience would my body ever adjust without meds?
Avatar n tn She gave me valtrex for my outbreak and sent me to a gynocologist who confirmed the herpes, gave my acyclovir to take on an ongoing basis and said it was ok to have sex. But before I could think of all my questions she was gone. So I was still in shock and told my lover. He was ok with me having herpes. In the meantime the first affair ended and I have been with another lover, again in a very similar situation but much younger than me.
Avatar f tn My gynocologist just told me that I need to stop taking it because it causes liver damage. I asked her if I could take Famir or Zovirax on a daily basis instead. She said no because all anti-virals cause liver damage. My husband does not have Herpes. I have a stressful job and frequent outbreaks, hence my interest in daily suppressive therapy. Do you agree with my doctor that I don't have any medication options? Is' it possible to take a lower dose?
Avatar n tn Acyclovir is always 2x/day for suppressive therapy. You can not take acyclovir just 800mg 1x/day. It's not effective that way. Call your provider up and question that dose. If they say that that dose works too -ask them to please cite the research that backs that. I guarantee you they can't provide any that shows that 800mg once a day is effective for acyclovir!! do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? How about orally - which one?
Avatar m tn Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.htm this table comes directly from the valtrex full prescribing info.
Avatar m tn My guess would be because you get less active acyclovir in your body with plain ole acyclovir than you do valtrex but we have no studies to back this assumption.
