Avatar n tn I have been on acyclovir (400mg) twice daily for the past 6 months. Prior to that I was taking Valtrex (500 mg) once daily for 18 months. For the past few months I have noticed that my blood pressure is elevated (140s-160s sys over 80s-90s dia). Could the use of acyclovir be causing this? Any insight is appreciated.
Avatar f tn actually with oral acyclovir ( the pill form you are taking ), there isn't a risk of kidney issues as long as you aren't elderly and don't have any underlying kidney disorders. No need to increase your water intake, just drink the normal amount of fluids that you always do :) there also isn't any reason for any routine blood work because of being on suppressive therapy - just a fyi. are you taking 400mg twice a day for suppressive therapy?
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with genital hsv2 about 3 months ago through PP. The initial outbreak was almost over when I was tested so I don't know if the acyclovir aided in clearing it up or not. I was told to take it 3x a day whenever I first notice symptoms and continue for 7-10 days, longer if it isn't cleared up yet. I've had at least 2 more outbreaks in the same spot since then and been taking the acyclovir for about a month straight right now.
Avatar n tn Hi. I've been taking Acyclovir for the past several months and it seems to be working great for my oral hsv 1 outbreaks. I was wondering though if anyone knows if viral shedding is also reduced when taking this med as daily suppressive? I'd sure like to be less contagious between obvious outbreaks! Also, I've read that long term use may cause kidney damage and hair loss. Anyone experience any of these side effects?
Avatar n tn I have recently found out that I have HSV-1 (IgG=41). Not sure if it was from past sexual encounters or even before that, but doesn't matter anymore. I've read somewhere online before that taking acyclovir or valacyclovir every day consistently might result in a negative HSV test. My questions are: 1. Does that work and is that recommended, if not, why? 2.
Avatar m tn I was was also detected pre diabetic with Ha1bc 8.5 and SGOT and way high at 220. I was kept under Acyclovir 400 gms thrice a day. It worked. After 3 weeks I was told to reduce the dosage to 2 times a day and do the test again after 3 months. After 3 months my diabetic condition was better controlled at ha1bc 6.4. An i did not have any outbreak of the HSV 1. But the second test after 3 months had a increased igg value from 5.1 to 6.3.
Avatar f tn I was given medication for and kidney infection and Acyclovir 800mg 5 X daily. However, before I could make my appointment the pain got worst I could barely walk and urination literally brought tears to my eyes so I went back to the emergency room. I noticed more swelling of the clitoris and vaginal opening additionally a few open cuts or ulcers where I had shaved prior.
Avatar f tn You must tell your physician if you are allergic to valacyclovir or acyclovir. any kidney disease, blood disorders, immune deficiencies, dizziness etc. side effects associated are nausea, vomiting, fatigue, sore throat, hemolytic uremic syndrome etc. You need to be concerned about the cumulative side effects of the two drugs. Otherwise, there are no serious interactions documented in the medical literature. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn t have to tell me), so maybe your doctor looked at the wrong dosing info. The only real concern is long-term use and kidney damage, especially if you have a kidney disorder now. Remember that the chance of him getting herpes from you is low. He has about a 98% chance of NOT getting it each year. He probably thinks you're worth the risk.
Avatar f tn I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
Avatar m tn i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
Avatar m tn Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
1302779 tn?1287405029 the doses you take for recurrences do tend to give the headaches :( do you take advil or anything along with the acyclovir knowing that it's likely to cause you to get a headache?
Avatar m tn Does Acyclovir make anyone else feel completely terrible? I get terrible headaches, dizzy, diarrhea and feel just awful. im not sure which is worse sometimes.
Avatar f tn the prescribing info for acyclovir I believe states you don't need routine kidney or liver testing. I haven't read it in awhile but you could check that out. They stopped recommending routine blood testing while on suppressive therapy probably about 20 years ago. 200mg daily isn't an adequate dose at all. do you have hsv1 or hsv2? do you have it genitally or orally? does your partner have herpes?
Avatar f tn Pretty mild outbreak with one lesion. A week dose of acyclovir and it was gone! No further troubles over the next 12 months.. July 2016 slept with a new partner - constant burning, coldness, numbness, leaking after urination and ejaculation.. Kinda like prodrone symptoms but without the actual outbreak.. This has been going on for four months now.
Avatar m tn Also, if I take Valtrex 500mg every day for the forseeable future are there any risks? i.e. kidney/liver problems down the track etc? Thanks.
Avatar n tn Acyclovir is always 2x/day for suppressive therapy. You can not take acyclovir just 800mg 1x/day. It's not effective that way. Call your provider up and question that dose. If they say that that dose works too -ask them to please cite the research that backs that. I guarantee you they can't provide any that shows that 800mg once a day is effective for acyclovir!! do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? How about orally - which one?
Avatar m tn Greatly simplified - you swallow valtrex and your body converts it into acyclovir inside the body. You get more active acyclovir available to kick a little herpes butt by doing it this way. That's why you take valtrex less often. We don't have studies to confirm that acyclovir reduces transmission the same amount as valtrex does but we assume it does. http://racoon.com/herpes/v_a_compare.htm this table comes directly from the valtrex full prescribing info.
