Acyclovir in pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir in pregnancy

zovirax

Avatar f tn JMHO. That being said chicken pox is dangerous in pregnancy and can cause complications in the mother (pneumonia for starters) as well as in the fetus. I absolutely would take what the dr prescribe me since it is treatment for chicken pox in pregnancy.
Avatar m tn My daughter has been HSV2 positive for appx three years but has not had any outbreaks since the first year. She is in her last five weeks of pregnancy and her doctor has prescribed acyclovir 400mg once a day. My understanding has been that acyclovir is a twice a day medication. Is the medication going to benefit her at this dosage or does it need to be changed? Thank you!
Avatar m tn Not in canada so I go by the ACOG recommendations as well as the extensive research by Dr Zane Brown who has done the majority of the research on herpes and pregnancy. The herpes handbook by Terri Warren, our herpes expert here in medhelp, also supports the dose I recommended. you never, ever, EVER have to take acyclovir if you don't want to, even during pregnancy.
Avatar n tn Has anyone noticed that there is a shortage of Acyclovir in the US? I live on the East coast and have found that it is very hard to get my prescription re-filled. I take 400mg x2 a day for suppression and I have only been able to get 200mg. With some difficulty I might add. It isn't the end of the world but I am concerned about the supply in a month when I go for another re-fill. I read on the FDA web site that there is currently a shortage. http://www.fda.
Avatar n tn My question is why would I get blisters a second time in 2 weeks? Since it is a weekend, should I start the Acyclovir again, and can it do me any harm if I do? Being a weekend, I can't get in touch with the physician, and I now have 2 opposing medical opinions, from my physician to stop the Acyclovir, and one from the physician at the urgent care clinic on 8/26 to start the medication again. Thanks for your help.
Avatar f tn 12 weeks after my last realtionship (because of his affairs) I tested HIV negativ - so this can not be the trigger. The docors in the HIV forum told me that acyclovir does not inhibit the HI virus so that I can trust in my negativ result although being ón acyclovir. Would you agree? I hope my question is not too long. But I really think that you will take my problems seriously as you did it with all the other Users!
Avatar f tn I continued 2 times a day acyclovir for suppression. After that I had bacterial infection in my vagina which the doc gave me metrogel, and then an abcess in my labia which the doc said was a clogged gland, which she drained and gave me flexril for. A few days later, I had arm pain (feels like deep aching in my bone, similar to my leg pain before my outbreak), and a very itchy rash on my the upper part of my breast! It itches a lot, and feels very similar to the way my herpes itched.
Avatar n tn The severity of the out break has also increased significantly extremely painful nothing like before. The medication acyclovir doesn.t seem to be helping the out breaks are lasting about 2 weeks to resolve completely. Why is this happening? Is it age related?( i just turned 38) Can it be related to my diet? (transitioning to veganism)What kind of specialist or doctor can i consult?(my ob/gyn is clueless) the same thing is happening to my husband.
Avatar f tn Although rare... it IS indeed happening because 1) well I'm the one experiencing it & 2) I have frequent visits nowto my Dr.because I am in the last 4wks of pregnancy & it IS reconfirmed as it is herpes. I have had tests done ALREADY far as other stds & infections, only think was a yeast infection which I highly doubt is causing things to go crazy because this is not my first one... So let me better re-word my question..
Avatar m tn You get much better relief from ob's by taking acyclovir 2x/day every single day. You can do this for under $20/month in the US even if you don't have insurance. Lysine doesn't help to heal ob's faster. It also doesn't suppress the virus. For acyclovir when you first start feeling an ob about to start, take either 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 2x/day for 2 days. Both speed healing at the same rate.
Avatar f tn I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
Avatar m tn We took a 3 day break from sex then repeated the 3 times a day the following weekend. The raw feeling in my penis got worse to the point I went to the dr. It literally felt like I had a raw sore, but nothing was there. She confirmed everything looked normal, but said it was probably herpes based on my symptoms and my girlfriend's status. She prescribed acyclovir, which I didn't start taking yet.
Avatar f tn Will every optholmologist are aware of HSV I in eyes? Are there any medication specifically for HSV I in eyes? I am planning to take suppressive theraphy for HSV I and HSV II (Acyclovir for 3 times a day - 7 days a month - for 6 months). Will that suffice for this also?
Avatar n tn My question is, is there any harm/risk involved in not treating this reoccurance with Acyclovir/meds? I plan to go on suppressive therapy towards the end of the pregnancy but I'd rather not take it otherwise. Do you think allowing this outbreak to run it's full course untreated, is dangerous? Is there any advantage for baby to cut it short with prescription meds? Albeit rare, could it possibly increase the chances of neo-natal transmission? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Avatar n tn Hi there, In November 2008, my boyfriend kissed me when he had a visible coldsore on his lip. 24 hours later I had one come up on my lip, but with it came 3 blisters in my mouth (on my tongue & gums). From the day I caught these cold sores, I've hardly had a single day without them. They are rarely on the outside of my mouth though, but always on the inside.
Avatar f tn should you have obvious lesions the week before you are due or when you are in labor, a C section will be performed. You can take acyclovir or valtrex for the last month of pregnancy in the pregnancy doses if you are interested in order to increase the odds of not having an obvious lesion present close to delivery. if the "trauma" of a traumatic birthing or an episiotomy triggered a recurrence, it would happen after the baby was born so it wouldn't be an issue.
Avatar m tn i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
1302779 tn?1287405029 the doses you take for recurrences do tend to give the headaches :( do you take advil or anything along with the acyclovir knowing that it's likely to cause you to get a headache?
Avatar m tn Does Acyclovir make anyone else feel completely terrible? I get terrible headaches, dizzy, diarrhea and feel just awful. im not sure which is worse sometimes.
Avatar f tn I don't wanna keep calling my doctor for every little thing. I've been on Acyclovir 400mg for about 10 days now. Had to take 2 a day for the first week and now down to 1 a day. I'm currenty 28 weeks pregnant. The pain down there has went down and I can finally wipe and pee without pain. I'm just a bit itchy down there and around my butthole (sorry tmi). I only get the occational sharp shooting pain that will last a few moments and feels like I am being ripped up down there.
Avatar f tn m not certain whether the ACOG and CDC recommendations about acyclovir (or valacyclovir) late in pregnancy are intended for moms with histories of genital HSV-1. My judgment is that treatment is still a good idea, and I certainly would want it to be done if my daugher, wife, or other person close to me were in your situation. But you could discuss this aspect with your obstetrician. Consider printing out this entire thread as a starting point for discussion at your next prenatal visit.
Avatar m tn I did have a bad spout of cold sores this past 5 month so my doctor gave me acyclovir. My cold sores do hurt. The scab in my genital area does not flake like my cold sores do. It more less just gets smaller. I take acyclovir as a daily suppressant. I am wondering if what I am describing as a chance of herpes? If I am on dailly acyclovir does that help me with resistant of HSV2 infection? Keep in mind I do have a high anxiety of herpes and HIV.
Avatar m tn It also sounds like you and your partner are in a monogamous relationship in which neither of you has other sexual partners. If this is the case, you can both be tested for a variety of STDs and, if the tests are negative, you have no reason for concern as long as you do not have other partners. The tests I would recommend in general for both of you are tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia at all sites of exposure (penis, rectum and throat) and blood tests for syphilis and HIV.
