Acyclovir for meningitis

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir for meningitis

zovirax

Avatar f tn It is my understanding that Mollarets and recurrent lymphocytic meningitis(my diagnosis for lack of a better one) are interchangeable diagnoses. Acyclovir is also for Herpes meningitis (70% recurrent meningitis is Herpes). My spinal fluid always comes back negative for Herpes, but I was on acyclovir anyway for quite awhile just to try anything and still the meningitis came back. This has been going on for 6 years now,so it is maybe auto immune. anyone with any other ideasto share?
Avatar n tn does recurrent hsv 2 infections also trigger radiculitis or sacral neuropathy or menigitis? what is the likelihood of developing hsv encephalitis or meningitis during recurrent attacks? is the neurologic manifestations exclusive only during the primary infection? does taking anti-virals (acyclovir, valacyclovir) decrease the neuropathic complications or no effect at all?
Avatar f tn m a healthy 24 year old female who has been suffering from this since Spring 2007 (came down with meningitis 3x in 3 months - acyclovir and Valtrex treatments did not work and resulted in renal failure). All 3 times, my spinal tap came back positive for HSV II. I am currently (and have been since August 2007) taking 500mg of Famciclovir per day. For the first year, I took 500mg 3x per day. The second year I reduced it to 500mg 2x per day because it was really hard on my body.
Avatar f tn I called the ID doc and the nurse confirmed my HSV-2 test was positive. They direct admitted me for IV acyclovir and pain management. The only thing that helped the pain was dilaudid and solu medrol. I got a PICC line and went home for 14 days of IV acyclovir every 8 hours. I'm still tired, but feeling better and trying to wrap my head around all of this. I've never had an outbreak. Even with the meningitis I didn't have any sores.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your reply. The doctor who gave the final (so far) diagnosis to me was an infectious disease specialist. However, he said some things that I know aren't correct, like "50% of the population has HSV2" and "you didn't necessarily get this from having sex." And, as I mentioned, both the specialists and the hospital residents made an early uninformed decision that this must be herpes and then variously tried to prove it.
Avatar m tn However, fungal meningitis is rare in patients who do not have HIV/AIDS, it can occur but represents a small minority of cases and even then there is usually some other cause of immunosuppression in these people such as chronic alcholism, chemotherapy for cancer, organ transplant with immunosuppression, etc....Fungal meningitis in a non-immunosuppressed person is uncommon. Have you had a lumbar puncture yet? That should give you more answers.
Avatar f tn I had suffered fever for 13days and was only diagnosed with Viral Menigitis on the 15days after a lumbar tap. I was given an IVof NS and acyclovir(prophylaxis accdg to my doctor) for 3 days every 8 hours. My fever subsided and totally gone, and headache started. Tylenol ES was not effective with this headache and I was prescribed with Hydromorph 3mgSR every 12 hours and then 1 mg breakthrough every 6hours. It helps me for a week.
429949 tn?1224691579 Quix, I was wondering if you knew the answer to this question? Could meningitis of any type show up as white matter lesions? If so would they look the similar to MS lesions. And if a person did have meningitis would it still show up on spinal tap eight months after the onset, or would it be cleared out of the spinal fluid by then?
Avatar m tn hi, i have been having mild symptoms which suggest some sort of meningitis in my opinion. basically it started two years ago with spasms in the tummy. and then spasms in my limbs, back as well as eyelids (twitching). from then on in the months to come, the above symptoms come and go, each time new symptoms accompany it. i experienced dull headaches at the back of the head. tingling sensation at the same area as well as down my spine.
Avatar n tn I've had a runny nose and cough for two months, along with a sore throat off and on (more on than off). No congestion. No sinus pain. No ear problems. Continuous symptoms, not a day in two months without. It started with a bad cold I had caught, and these particular symptoms never went away. Spring/summer is in full swing now, and my first guess would be that it's allergies, but I've never had this problem before. Itchy eyes and throat, yes, but not this.
Avatar m tn I had my HSV2 primary otbk (genital) with Meningitis or Encephalitis (no tests) '05- high fever, light sensitive, confusion, stiff neck, flu like symptoms. After genital otbks with blisters on forehead. Yr later g otbks turned to g neuralgia & rash on skin. Rash looked like the number 9- anywhere from 2"-10" in length & presented on both ankles & under eye (orbital). This has happened at least 30+ Xs. GP said viral rash.
Avatar f tn I recently went back to the doctor's office for a IgG test because I was told by a former partner that he may have HSV2 last year. I never had an official breakout but shortly after I started getting leg pain and sacral pain and the following month after coming back from vacation I got viral meningitis. I researched and found that nerve pain is associated with Herpes and that viral meningitis is also.
Avatar m tn I am confident in both these procedures and plan to follow these recommendations, to hopefully kill off the virus and inflammation for once and for all. The vitamin/mineral IV successfully cleared up an intractable case of pneumonia for me that had not responded to three increasingly strong rounds of antibiotics. So I'm describing all this here for those who have not gotten rid of their viral meningitis after a few months and are still suffering.
Avatar n tn You are not in mourning for anything except your unprotected sex life ...... for people who get HSV2 it is like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted and have to now do what we should have done in the first place and that is ....played safe and protected ourselves ..... We are all in charge of what we are prepared to risk and for all of us with HSV2 we took the risk of unprotected sex and are now paying the price for that so we have no one to blame but ourselves ...
Avatar m tn virest is just a generic brand name for acyclovir. Acyclovir does not cure herpes. It impedes replication of the virus in the body but it still doesn't completely prevent shedding of the virus or stop ob's completely. It's a treatment, not a cure.
Avatar m tn s he was going to prescribe me 400mg acyclovir to take twice daily for suppression. My question is, how much of a reduced number of OB's should I expect and does taking this medication cause any birth defects as my wife and I are talking of maybe having another child. Thanks in advance.
Avatar m tn I worry that she got meningitis? Also, its possible she got a parasite. How long since she was in Mexico? Do you know if she ate any pickled pigs feet or anything raw? Firstly, have you checked her temperature? It is good she is going to a neurologist due to her symptoms. Stress is ridiculous it doesn't cause hallucinations and swollen lymph nodes! Unbelievable. I think a CT or MRI of the brain/neck would be a good thing to make sure there was no head trauma as well.
1936550 tn?1348360208 My baby girl has meningitis. They are finding out if its viral or bacterial. Please pray for my baby that its just viral. She will be one month on the 14th. I'm scared for her and have been crying non stop. Its hard waiting for the results. Please everyone pray for my baby.
Avatar f tn I had meningitis at the age of 5 and I was in a car wreck in 1996, I had a cervical fusion and dissection. I am having pain similar to a sciatic nerve and lack of mobility in my legs it used to only happen when I would sweep, weed the garden movements such as that but, now it is almost daily and I have had an MRI, nerve conduction & X-rays (waiting to see the Dr. next week for complete results) so far the only issue that they have told me is that I have arthritis in my lower spine.
Avatar f tn my 5 yr old daughter just got out of the hosp for meningitis........they could not give me a 100% answer but they are sure it was bacterial meningitis! no one told us how she got it, all they said was that i did the right thing by taking her to er asap! friday morning she told me her head hurt when she looked down and me being a nurse i thought meningitis but "what are the odds" so i took her to daycare and told them to call me if she got sick!
