I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day?
My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?

I am 23 and I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in mid-December. My diagnosis was by culture. (It was also clear-cut because I've had only one partner--10 days before my outbreak he had a cold sore on his lip and performed oral sex on me).
SInce then, I've had a raised line or paper cut lesion appear on the inside of the left labia about every 1-2 weeks.
I am advised now to increase acyclovir dosage to 3 times a day and have levamisole hydrochloride 75 gms twice a week for another 3 months and check for HSV1 igg again. Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.
I started having very mild genital herpes outbreaks about eight months ago, and for this outbreak (only one small blister) I decided to take acyclovir tablets and acyclovir cream. I have no pain or itching. I have taken it for a day and a half, 200 mg every 4 hours, omitting the nighttime dose. My blister is pretty much gone, and Im wondering, would it be okay to stop taking the acyclovir? I read everywhere that Im supposed to take it for 5 days, but is it for the same reason as antibiotics?

you never, ever, EVER have to take acyclovir if you don't want to, even during pregnancy.
Oh and I should add that only oral herpes type 1 is a risk for Bell's Palsy. Genital herpes is not a cause of it.

Once we started dating I began taking a daily dosage of Acyclovir 200mg in August of 2010 (one pill twice daily.. one in the morning and one at night) to mitigate the risk of exposing her to what I believe I had and reduce outbreaks. A week later the line did not go away, so my doctor states to me that it was not herpes and he is not sure what it is. As a result he told me to stop taking the acyclovir. I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed. My internist has diagnosed me (after MRI) as having bone spur puttting pressure on c-6 or c-7 in my neck and I am facing surgery for that.
abreva isn't really effective for oral herpes for the price you pay for that teeny tube. it barely got fda approval to say it speeds the healing of herpes lesions :( It only heals cold sores less than a day sooner than using a placebo. you can get a round of acyclovir for $4 - works a little better and far cheaper. if you use acyclovir, best to start it at the very first sign of a cold sore about to start.
her obgyn really needs to bone up on her herpes and pregnancy info as well as how herpes antivirals work. once daily acyclovir is never effective for herpes suppression :(
she really needs to be on the 3x/day dose if she is going to bother to take it. not worth taking anything less than that. Odds are in the future that the doses are going to be even more frequent than that and higher doses based on some recent research on herpes and pregnancy but for now that is the recommended dose.
It's too late for a leision culture but go back because it should've cleared up by now, not continue to keep having recurrences like this back to back even while on acyclovir. Odds are that it's not oral herpes going on after all.
acyclovir cream isn't very effective in general. it is actually recommended more so for oral herpes than genital herpes though it's usefulness is limited for both.
Oral antivirals in the cold sore doses work better. plenty of cheaper and better topicals to apply to a cold sore for pain relief than acyclovir. Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts.
The problem subsided and he has now prescribed a prophylactic dosage of Acyclovir 400mg 1 time daily for the next 6 months. At random, the red spots on the glans and prepuce keep reappearing for a day or so. The urologist claims that as long as there is no pain or itchiness, there is nothing to worry.
My points of confusion are:
1. Is this really Herpes? I haven't had sex since Jul-06 (it's true!) - no intercourse, no oral, no skin-contact, no nothing.
you mean acyclovir does not suppress genital herpes? i am wondering whether being on acyclovir could be making it harder for me to determine whether i've contracted genital herpes (either by suppressing symptoms, or affecting tests). It sounds like it DOES affect blood testing...?
I guess I have to endure the symptoms until enough time passes for a conclusive test. (12-16 weeks?) Or until some other symptom manifests itself (God forbid). But ...

sounds like they threw the book at you medicine wise. topical zovirax doesn't do a whole heck of a lot for cold sores, especially if symptoms have been there for several days. at this point even acyclovir orally isn't going to do a whole lot either.
no idea why they prescribed an antibiotic for you.
not sure what the last medication you listed is for.
