My doctor has perscribed 200mg taken 3 times per day - and has indicated that this is a strong enough dosage for me. My question still remains, is a dosage of 200mg taken 2 times per day effective?
I have a strong adversion to taking meds of any kind. I get dizzy, light headed, tired, cranky and can taste metal in my mouth.
I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?
That same day I tripled my dosage of Acyclovir as I had read that for an episodic occurance it can be taken 3 times a day for two days for an outbreak. Would this new outbreak be caused by me not taken the dosage first prescribed by my Dr or is it possible to still have an outbreak while on a daily supresser?
Just 4 days ago I started to feel itchiness on the same area and it was a few small blisters so the next day I started again the same treatment, the same dosage. The scabs stop growing or spreading and by now are dry. Its been only 2 months apart this second outbreak. The antiviral its really expensive but given the frecuency of the outbreaks should I go under supressive therapy? and if so, Whats the dossage and period of time i should do it?

acyclovir needs to be taken 2x/day to effectively suppress hsv2. All 3 herpes antivirals suppress hsv2 about the same amount except for famvir doesn't work as well in folks who are asymptomatic in their infections. the herpes handbook is free to read online and has info on all 3 antivirals.
I've had four outbreaks in one month since contracting this virus. I don't understand why my symptoms are so bad. I got herpes a little over a month ago from my boyfriend who "didn't know" because he never had or has symptoms. When he tested positive he was almost in denial because he just doesn't feel the effects. He drinks more than me, smokes, not really concerned about eating healthy....
I am advised now to increase acyclovir dosage to 3 times a day and have levamisole hydrochloride 75 gms twice a week for another 3 months and check for HSV1 igg again. Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.
My daughter has been HSV2 positive for appx three years but has not had any outbreaks since the first year. She is in her last five weeks of pregnancy and her doctor has prescribed acyclovir 400mg once a day. My understanding has been that acyclovir is a twice a day medication. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed. My internist has diagnosed me (after MRI) as having bone spur puttting pressure on c-6 or c-7 in my neck and I am facing surgery for that. There is no pain in my neck or any where else. Therapy has not helped. Am taking 800-1200 mg of Advil and 800 mg of Acyclovir daily, plus Alcum for pain at night.

When my refills are out, I have been planning on ordering Zovirax online in the dosage prescribd by my doctor. I know this is probably advised against, but are there any risks in doing this? It would just help my peace of mind so much more. Also are side effects such as hair loss only a concern for long term suppressive therapy? Acyclovir seems to help but it seems like it would depress me even more if I lost hair or went bald because of it.
Acyclovir works by binding with the building blocks of virus replication. Hence it doesn't really do you much harm starting or stopping dosage. In many ways, I consider it too late once an outbreak commences to start with antivirals; bit a drop in the ocean next to your immune system kicking into gear!
It is a bias, but I am of the view that antivirals if taken should be taken daily for the reduction in outbreaks and shedding.
That is only for genital HSV2 as well, is this what you have?
Sorry to be so confusing. Our son has NEVER had an experience of genital herpes, and is not convinced that he has it now. Being a hyponcondriac he would have noticed any past lesions, especially had they been on the genitals.. He would be devastated, coupled with his other health issues.
I didn't ask about acyclovir.
Once we started dating I began taking a daily dosage of Acyclovir 200mg in August of 2010 (one pill twice daily.. one in the morning and one at night) to mitigate the risk of exposing her to what I believe I had and reduce outbreaks. We are having oral sex but not any other type of intercourse. I have not had an outbreak since beginning this daily dosage of Acyclovir.
I am 23 and I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in mid-December. My diagnosis was by culture. (It was also clear-cut because I've had only one partner--10 days before my outbreak he had a cold sore on his lip and performed oral sex on me).
SInce then, I've had a raised line or paper cut lesion appear on the inside of the left labia about every 1-2 weeks.
