Acyclovir and viral shedding

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir and viral shedding

famvir

Avatar f tn In the studies done originally on doses and effectiveness for the most amount of people as far as reducing ob's and viral shedding, the once daily doses of acyclovir were not effective. the half life of acyclovir is very short and just taking it daily is not enough to keep the virus under control adequately.
Avatar n tn The thing with me is that I don't have outbreaks at all. The first and last one I ever had was a year ago after I was first exposed and diagnosed. The sores showed up about a week after I was with this person. Since then, it's almost like I don't even have herpes. I'm just VERY confused about this, and how to explain it my boyfriend. I've read information online that says asymptomatic shedding occurs right before, during, and right after outbreaks.
Avatar m tn We assume the other 2 antivirals, acyclovir and famvir , have similar results. anything you do that reduces shedding of the virus reduces the amount of times a partner is likely to come into contact with active herpes and all 3 herpes antivirals reduce shedding similarly.
Avatar n tn Suppose she starts using daily suppressive treatment with acyclovir, and we did not have unprotected sex during symptomatic outbreaks. What does best science suggest the probability of me becoming infected would be per year, if there were, say, 50-60 varginal exposures per year without using condoms (I'm just expecting your best sense on this)? What should the daily dosage regime be? How much would condom use lower the risk?
Avatar f tn Also, I gave oral sex to my boyfriend last night and he has hsv-2. While I was doing it, my armpits were literally resting on his thighs (the inside of my armpits). What is the likelihood that I have armpit herpes?
Avatar m tn oral herpes viral shedding wouldn't cause prodromal symptoms for weeks. really not likely what is going on is due to your oral herpes infection. when you have the genital symptoms, do they test you for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally? either an ENT specialist or a dermatologist would be appropriate follow up for the oral burning issues. I think I'd go with the dermatologist since they can help figure out what is going on orally as well as genitally both.
Avatar n tn That number includes both having obvious cold sores and shedding without obvious cold sores. So you could be shedding say 3 days today, have an obvious cold sore next week and shed for 3 more days and maybe next month shed a day here and a day there and then maybe 2 days in a row over thanksgiving etc. ' Even though 2 months out of the year sounds like a lot, it's still 10 months out of the year when you aren't contagious. Just gotta put it in perspective sometimes.
Avatar f tn What is recommended amt of acyclovir to suppress outbreaks and significantly reduce viral shedding? My dr wants me to take 200mg once per day.
Avatar f tn I would be grateful if you can explain asymptomatic shedding rates for both oral HSV-1 and genital HSV-1, especially with acyclovir as a daily suppressive. I've seen various statistics and am not quite sure if there is a difference in days of the year versus days observed or however it is worded. I would be grateful if you can word it in approximate days per year. Thanks for your concern for my eyes. I've been aware of the level of seriousness since my first outbreak.
Avatar n tn My understanding is that based on my Genitial HSV-1 diagnosis, I should never have another outbreak (or at least very few) and that I am at an extremely low risk of spreading the virus through shedding. Valtrex is outrageously expensive costing me and my HMO about $375 per month. Also, I am worried about the side effects of the drug. Lately I have started to feel rather depressed, something very new to me.
Avatar f tn The 1st doctor did a visual test and prescribed acyclovir 800mg 3x a day for 7 days. I had an igg test done in Jan 2018 and the doctor called and said that the test showed that I had been exposed to hsv1&2.
Avatar f tn The thing I ammost interested to know is my chances and percentages of viral shedding and transmitting that way ? Because it seems so weird to never have anything ever again yet I can pass it on .
Avatar m tn She told me that she was diagnosed 3-years ago and has been on Acyclovir for 3-years (taking twice daily) and has not had an out-break in those three years since beginning the antiviral. My situation: Just came out of a 5-year monogamous relationship where we always had unprotected sex. Never saw a sign or symptom over that time of having HSV-2 in either of us. Pretty sure I contracted HSV-1 from her via kissing (sore at the corner of the mouth).
Avatar m tn Last month a started taking 800mg of acyclovir daily to see if that would reduce my outbreaks and shedding. I have a few questions regarding my situation: 1. If I have an outbreak nearly every month, could it be that my immune system is compromised or could it have no relation to it? I am very healthy, don't smoke, seldomly drink, exercise, etc. 2.
Avatar n tn ditto for his risk of genital HSV-1. In both cases, recurrent outbreaks are rare and asymptomatic viral shedding relatively uncommon. If I were in your circumstances, my personal view would be to not worry about it, even if transmission occurred. I won't continue a second hand debate with your partner's doctor, but I would not hesitate to recommend acyclovir or valacyclovir to a patient like your partner, assuming his renal function is reasonably nomal (e.g.
55646 tn?1263660809 This is another attempt at enhancing the immune response to herpes as a way to decrease the frequency of recurrences and viral shedding for people already infected with HSV 2. Avatar m tn 3- Is there any quick test which can be done on my own in order to check presence of the virus on the skin (Viral Shedding)? This help detecting those Viral Shedding with no visible sore and thus further reducing the chance of spreading the virus.
Avatar f tn Valtrex is an anti-viral, and it reduces the frequency and/or severity of outbreaks, and also will help suppress the virus from shedding. Acyclovir is another anti-viral as well.
Avatar f tn Have blood test planned for boyfriend and me next week to get type info. My question is, I plan on staying on acyclovir after this ob heals bc this has been so severe I want to minimize getting it again as much as possible. I have read that acyclovir cuts my risk of spreading it, as it cuts down on shedding. Does it also cut my risk of getting hsv 1 ? Specifically, if he has hsv genitally, can I do oral sex and have low risk of getting in the mouth?
Avatar f tn I’ve had less than 5 outbreaks since then, last one maybe 9 months ago. Been on acyclovir 400mg 3 times a day for almost 6 months now, and absolutely no sign of outbreaks or even prodrome since then. For a couple of weeks now, my labia majora has been bright red, but not raw feeling. Just inside my vagina, there seems to be a red spot, but doesn’t seem to look or feel like any sort of blister is present at all....does feel raw right where that spot is though.
Avatar n tn Your acyclovir dosage is correct the way it is now for suppressive therapy: 400mg 2X day. Taking more does not correlate with being more effective.
Avatar n tn Hi - No, nothing cures herpes. Antivirals don't cure it, either. They just help prevent outbreaks and reduce shedding if you take them daily. No studies have been done on any of the things you mentioned and transmission, so we can't say how it works for that, but some say L-lysine and Monolaurin really helps them in reducing the frequency of outbreaks. Others don't, so obviously that varies. Be really leery of anything promising a cure.
Avatar m tn I get them on my hip normally when I am about to menstruate. It has been about 2 months since the switch to 1xday 800mg acyclovir and I have experienced an outbreak. I don't understand why since they are the same drug?
