My husband woke up with slight swelling of the left side of his face from hairline to ear- had a small raised bump, about the circumference of a dime- on his forehead at the hairline- not red not itchy just a bump- went to the doctor and was diagnosed as having shingles. Was given Acyclovir, the bump is now a redish brown crusty scabbed area, swelling has gone down on side of face, but his eyes water constantly, clear fluid, and he is now very swollen between his eyes and bridge of nose.
I am also 23 and I had shingles when I was 19. Its an adult form of the chicken pox and I know it hurts like hell. Unfortunately it will last for a month after you start your meds. You should see another doctor because if in fact you have shingles, it's a virus like the chicken pox, and antibotics won't do anything. You need a viral med. I was prescribed valtrex.
She first suggested shingles so gave me the acyclovir and also tested for HIV to see if my immune system was compromised- that came back clear. She then said it wasn't shingles because it happens most months and also happens in the exact same place which cold sores would do. She also said menstruation is a common trigger.
I find it odd that she hasn't tested me but have started the acyclovir - should I go back and ask for a test?
Do shingles and herpes look the same on the back? Does getting HSV-1 trigger shingles?? My god if I ever figure this nonsense out. I have genital HSV-1 for goodness sakes. It is not supposed to hang around chronically! I ran once at 10 a.m in Sun for 30 mins 2 months ago. Got a 3 inch round on my back. Did not test. I am so over it.
t see me, but told me to see my physician, which I did on 8/26 and he said it is the same outbreak, and to discontinue the Acyclovir, which I did. This morning, I awoke to pain and now have a new set of blisters. Yesterday, my physician told me that he has never seen a second outbreak so close, and that it is the same. My question is why would I get blisters a second time in 2 weeks? Since it is a weekend, should I start the Acyclovir again, and can it do me any harm if I do?
I ended up getting my first fever blister 7 years ago and started taking Acyclovir for it, so I decided to try it for my glandular problem and it seemed to work.
My last doctor said that it could be shingles, not genital herpes because high fever does not accompany genital herpes. I have a new doctor who has not seen it yet because I always try to nip it in the bud. I just take Acyclovir and it seems to do the trick.

I have had two outbreaks of Shingles, herpes zoster. My first was when I was in my early 20s and was on my stomach and back on my right side. The second case was last year, age 42, and was on my shoulder, neck, and face right side. This was very uncomfortable and lasted for about 6 months.
I did some research and found out about the immunization, zostavax, for shingles.
My question -
1) The handbook said zostavax is for people over age 60.
I get shingles a lot and I'm only 19. I got the chicken pox vaccine and i got the chicken pox when i was 5. My immunologist thought I had something called hyper ige syndrome but my results for that were negative. They don't really know why i keep having reoccurring shingles but i think it's mostly because I have a bad immune system and I do get stressed easily.
I've on acyclovir for shingles prevention and had a one night stand 14 weeks ago. I had a blood test at the 7 week mark and it was negative. When should I have my next blood test to be sure I'm negative.
For the past 5 years my headaches have gotton steadily worse, and while Imitrex 100 helps, my headaches have almost taken over my life EXCEPT I got a mild case of shingles about a month ago and took Acyclovir for one week. I had a dull headache for the week I took it, but immediately after I quit taking it, I didn't have a headache for one week. I mean I really didn't have a headache - not even a 1 on a scale of 1-10. I don't remember the last time that happened.
The doctor thought it might be shingles or a herpes outbreak! She put me on 800 mg of Acyclovir 5 times a day. I have had 9 doses and it seems to be getting worse not better. I have had bumps come up and form blisters within just a few hours today. HELP!!! I have been around about 100 kids under 5 over the past month and at least 2 of them have been diagnosed with chicken pox, which I had as a child and I had the shot... Could this be herpes or is there another explanation?
If you have pain and a rash in the same area - it is usually shingles. Acyclovir can help if you catch it in time.
