Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir and genital herpes

famvir

Avatar n tn you mean acyclovir does not suppress genital herpes? i am wondering whether being on acyclovir could be making it harder for me to determine whether i've contracted genital herpes (either by suppressing symptoms, or affecting tests). It sounds like it DOES affect blood testing...? I guess I have to endure the symptoms until enough time passes for a conclusive test. (12-16 weeks?) Or until some other symptom manifests itself (God forbid). But ...
Avatar f tn My question is that before and after I started to taking acyclovir(herpes) and levofwxuir(gonarrhea) I developed a white paste discharge from my vagina. Is this the cause of gonarrhea, herpes or the meds that I was taking? Also will this go away for good....I'm talking about the the white paste discharge and gonarrhea? I know the herpes is not curable but is there something that I can take to prevent the outbreak for coming back besides acyclovir....something over the counter?
Avatar n tn s not unusual for a newly acquired genital herpes infection to trigger a recurrence of an oral herpes infection. The acyclovir helps but doesn't completely prevent recurrences in either location.
Avatar n tn Can genital or simplex herpes cause Postherpetic Neuralgia? I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed.

Avatar f tn s and viral shedding, the once daily doses of acyclovir were not effective. the half life of acyclovir is very short and just taking it daily is not enough to keep the virus under control adequately.
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar n tn Herpes Simplex 1 and 2 can BOTH cause neuropathic pain syndromes. It is not limited to herpes zoster. There is plenty of research out there about it. I cannot understand why MDs are still ignorant of this or denying the association, when there is ample material in the literature documenting this problem. HSV infections are epidemic. It's time for primary care physicians to get current on the subclinical (not visually observable) and atypical (non-standard) manifestations of the disease.
Avatar n tn acyclovir cream isn't very effective in general. it is actually recommended more so for oral herpes than genital herpes though it's usefulness is limited for both. Oral antivirals in the cold sore doses work better. plenty of cheaper and better topicals to apply to a cold sore for pain relief than acyclovir. Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts.
Avatar f tn I have no experience with genital herpes, however I do have HSV-1. I have always take acyclovir when I have a cold sore, and never had too much of an issue with side effects until my last prescription. They upped my dose from 200 mg to 800 mg (different doctor), and I had all kinds of problems and only ended up taking them for 2 days. After the 2nd day on the 800 mg, my eyes became very irritated and my lips developed a rash and broke out in fordyce spots.
Avatar n tn Hello, does anyone know if 400mg of acyclovir daily is effective? I'm asking this because I had a blood test done on 2/12/2011 which came back equivical (sp) although my doc said that means negative but I'm scared that I may have gential herpes and don't want to risk having an outbreak or spreading it to my fiance. I plan to test again in April. Any advise is appreciated.
Avatar n tn I have genital herpes and my partner has a severely compromised immune system as a result of chemotherapy tx. We have not had sexual intercourse and want to understand what is safe to do/not do. Trying also to determine the best kind of specialist to consult with.
Avatar m tn I started having very mild genital herpes outbreaks about eight months ago, and for this outbreak (only one small blister) I decided to take acyclovir tablets and acyclovir cream. I have no pain or itching. I have taken it for a day and a half, 200 mg every 4 hours, omitting the nighttime dose. My blister is pretty much gone, and Im wondering, would it be okay to stop taking the acyclovir? I read everywhere that Im supposed to take it for 5 days, but is it for the same reason as antibiotics?
Avatar n tn I have been reasonably well and have had few relapses. About a year ago I was dianosed with genital herpes and have had two episodes since diagnosis too. I have no idea when I contracted this and I have read that it could have been lying dormant in my system for years possibly. I have some questions NOT including whether the herpes could have caused my MS as I have both conditions and there's not much I can do about that.
Avatar m tn If i stop acyclovir and my symtoms changes or new appears can be linked to herpes? I am frustrated with my poor judgement.
Avatar f tn the vast majority of people with genital herpes, don't have food triggers. been seen every time you have symptoms to confirm that it's all herpes going on. also get tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally too. unfortunately time doesn't make people have significantly less recurrences either for the most part.
Avatar m tn give the clinic a call monday and ask them to read the results to you. write them down to post here - e.g. hsv1 igg 5.9 and hsv2 igg 3.7 or whatever they are. that way we can be sure you were properly tested and see if you need additional confirmatory testing done or not. no, constant burning isn't associated with genital herpes. Plenty of posts on that here and also on the herpes expert forum and the std expert forum here on medhelp.
Avatar f tn Our son has NEVER had an experience of genital herpes, and is not convinced that he has it now. Being a hyponcondriac he would have noticed any past lesions, especially had they been on the genitals.. He would be devastated, coupled with his other health issues.
1225178 tn?1318980604 I just found out that what I thought was shingles on my lower back for the past 14 years was actually genital herpes. I am almost ready to start treatment for hep c and now this comes up and my doctor wants me to wait until the results from a culture come back. Is there a chance he won't allow me to treat because of the herpes? Has anybody else dealt with both at the same time?
