Acute polymorphic psychotic disorder with symptoms of schizophrenia

Common Questions and Answers about Acute polymorphic psychotic disorder with symptoms of schizophrenia

psychotic

Avatar n tn A person from my family went undiagnosed for many years despite strange behavior, only when she had a psychotic episode did she allow us to take her to a doctor and was diagnosed with paranoid disorder. The symptoms fit her "usual" symptoms (i.e. those she's had for years) - relatively coherent delusions of being disliked, plotted against, of her flat being bugged, someone stealing things when she's out.
1351968 tn?1278205300 One more thing, the two disorders can kind of be put together for one diagnosis. If the person has the symptoms of bipolar disorder but they have the disconects from reality of a person with schizophrenia then they can be diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.
202665 tn?1248806733 I have been a psych patient for 13 years and I'm 32. When I was 19, the pdoc thought I had postnatal psychosis, then about a year later they thought I could have schizoaffective disorder. I only know this now because my current pdoc told me, at the time when my family pressed for a diagnosis they were told I had "affective disorder with psychotic features". I strongly believe that our symptoms evolve over the years as our lives change, we learn coping skills etc.
Avatar f tn They can be primary psychiatric diagnoses, such as schizophrenia, or they may be associated with another neurological disorder such as a movement disorder like that seen in Huntington’s disease. Furthermore, psychotic episodes may be an acute change like that seen in delirium, stroke, or seizure. Depending on the complete history, including family history, associated symptoms, and clinical examination, imaging findings will likely be in different anatomical locations.
12268405 tn?1427853361 If you read on it, it is usually reserved for resistant bipolar disorder and schizophrenia with a history of multiple suicide attempts. There are other meds like risperdal, zyprexa, and such out there. For myself, risperdal worked really well. Since you posted back in early April, I hope you got a chance to talk about your confusion and concerns about the hallucinations.
Avatar f tn It is called Schizo-affect disorder. it is the higher level of Bi-polar disorder, so of a maxed out version when the mania and brain speed is so 'kindled' or hyperactive that you can see things and hear voice and yet not be schizophrenic. I know because that was me for five years I was diagnosed with it as a form of bi-polar disorder. I have been off all anti-psychotic meds now since 1997 and take nothing but something for insomnia and am sober as well.
Avatar f tn Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder or a depressive disorder with psychotic features, or another psychotic disorder and is not attributable to the physiological effects of another medical condition.
Avatar m tn While I'm sure that people with Schizophrenia may experience some of the symptoms you described, that doesn't mean that you have Schizophrenia. Those symptoms can also be caused by Severe Depression. What is your age? It is very, and I mean VERY rare for anyone to develope Schizophrenia after the age of about 20. Depression and Schizophrenia are two very different illnesses.
3579868 tn?1348739509 I know of four bipolar 1 with or without psychotic features, bipolar 2, bipolar nos, and cyclothimia. With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in.
Avatar f tn The glutamate hypothesis is still under research but clearly effects the specific parts of the brain and their functioning that can be shown to be the origin of the cluster of symptoms of schizophrenia that also would be noted in a Pet scan. Monoamine neurotransmitters are also involved in how MAO inhibitors work a class of anti-depressents that would be used more if it were not for enzyme interactions.
Avatar f tn The illness occurs in less than 1 percent of the general population, but it occurs in 10 percent of people who have a first-degree relative with the disorder, such as a parent, brother, or sister. I can understand your fear, especially if you already deal with an anxiety disorder.........which is VASTLY different than schizophrenia. When patients have active schizophrenia symptoms, they truly believe in their delusions and hallucinations, and will deny that they are sick.
2699259 tn?1344210945 My mother has Bipolar 1 with psychotic features, dx at the age of 48, now 66 yrs old. I believe she has struggled with it her whole life, I know I can remember her having psychotic episodes when I was as young as 5-6 years of age. I learned to hide her behavior very well, but I'm glad she finally got her dx when I was in my teens, it's still a challenge very single day for the both of us (and also for my family), it's like I am the parent and she is the child.
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
Avatar f tn Have you checked the symptoms of both to see which you identify with? I do know schizophrenia doesn't show up beyond age 30 or so; I'm unfamiliar with psychosis. I would value the input of friends and family who see you on a regular basis ... they know you the best.
719785 tn?1232901518 As a person who has recovered from schizoaffective disorder with an experimental antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study (read through my posts if you wish) I can say in having exprienced thoughts like that before recovery that they sound psychotic to me. It should be noted that I have schizoaffective disorder and with the bipolar aspect of schizoaffective disorder when I was put on Anafranil which is similar to Prozac it made me psychotic. The same is true of bipolar.
Avatar n tn Their official diagnosis was an acute polymorphic psychotic episode with no signs of schizophrenia. It was a truly awful experience, I believe I nearly died and coming out of it was like waking from a living nightmare. I stopped the meds, and went back to work with a calm & confidence I’d never known before.
Avatar m tn SEROQUEL is approved to treat the depressive episodes and the acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder and to treat schizophrenia. SEROQUEL XR is a once daily tablet approved only to treat schizophrenia Antidepressants have increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions in some children, teenagers, and young adults.
Avatar f tn Yes, it is possible. You can see the guidlines here: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.*************.com/schizophrenia/c/120/150461/schizophrenia/ If the delusions and whatnot only appear during a mood episode, then it's a mood disorder with psychotic features. To get the schizoaffective marker (schizophrenia + mood disorder), you must be having the schizophrenia symptoms for a certain amount of time while having a normal mood.
720657 tn?1233011567 There has been a controversy about whether schizoaffective disorder is a type of schizophrenia or a type of mood disorder. Today, most clinicians and researchers agree that it is primarily a form of schizophrenia. Although its exact prevalence is not clear, it may range from two to five in a thousand people (- i.e., 0.2% to 0.5%). Schizoaffective disorder may account for one-fourth or even one-third of all persons with schizophrenia.
585414 tn?1288941302 The panic attacks can also act as a catalyst to trigger a psychotic break in my schizophrenia and the schizophrenia can feed off of the traumatic events and trigger the PTSD. It's a catch 22 situation really. I've heard both can cause psychotic symptoms which I'm not too sure when which is causing my psychotic symptoms if that is true. I know at least I experienced psychotic symptoms before I developed PTSD or even went through the traumas which lead to PTSD.
Avatar n tn You could have depression with psychotic features or schizoaffective disorder. I have schizoaffective disorder and the mood disorder aspect is bipolar. I am recovered now with an antipsychotic in Phase II FDA study glycine as I've said on other posts but I know what the experience is like. But there are other forms of schizoaffective disorder that have depression instead of bipolar as the mood phase. And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away.
Avatar m tn I agree. If he has bipolar or schizophrenia he may not be eligible for the army, and if he needs that medication for psychotic symptoms or mood stabilizing going off will be a very bad idea. What is his diagnosis? And is he eligible to join the army? I just read that disorders with psychotic features is a disqualifying disorder. Please don't think about him going off the med and not revealing his complete health information. It could be dangerous to not just him but those serving with him.
Avatar f tn I discontinued risperidon two months ago. I have not had any psychotic symptoms. I believe my schizoaffective disorder is in remission. However can risperidon continue to have an effect two months after taking it? Anybody know? I took it for 4 years.
